View Full Version : The Inconsistencies of M$ and the Xbox.

Sometimes I scratch my head and wonder what M$ are thinking!
First off
Games: haven't you ever wondered what happened to some of the Sequels in the Xbox library? This is mostly a 3rd party issue however. C'mon, remember when M$ droned on and on about how they were getting MGS 2.... yeah great.... what about MGS 3? Onimusha Warloards was ported to Xbox, what about 2, 3 and even the forth ones?? Oh and best of all. Silent Hill 2 then they totally skip over SH 3 and port SH4 over, What is that???
Secondly
Hardware: This is more of a nitpick here but, ok, you purchase Halo 2 Limited Edition and it comes with a DVD so you can watch the making of Halo 2 and little tidbits about the Halo series. Yet if you don't have the freakin' remote...you cannot watch this on your Xbox? So in my case...I have to watch the Halo documentary packed in an Xbox title in my PS2...now that's funny! :p
The Live Headset: This is the Achilles Heel for playing Online through Live, I am trying out Xbox Live for 2 months free right now. Live is really strong, yet it is a huge pain in the a$$ without that Headset. I cannot even use an onscreen keyboard and communicate using my controller. And M$ wants $79.99CDN a year for this? Yeah Let's tack on another $39.99 CDN for that Headset now.
Thirdly:
Backwards Compatibility:
This is dreadful, At launch only Top selling, Most popular games that are selected by M$ will be compatible? Possible need for hard drive? Possible Xbox emulation image? No guaranties? This is so f-ing ridiculous. Redundancy at its finest!
My final words on Xbox: Xbox has grown into a great system, tons of great titles that I truly call Masterpiece. I personally think Xbox is being killed off way too soon. It is the most powerful system and has plenty of life left in it...yet it is being turfed first to make way for...well we all know!
I am not getting rid of my Xbox anytime soon but 360 does not interest me.

XBOX Live was designed with live-chat in mind. At the time, this was a leap above Dreamcast and PS2 who both had online play but neither offered live voice-chat (PS2 may have had a couple titles but most didn't support it). As a matter of fact, some PS2 online enabled titles still don't support voice-chat.
So MS came out of the gate with all titles supporting voice-chat (similar to the 360 all supporting a min. of 720p - its a requirement).
I can't recall a single person complaining about this functionality stating they'd rather type on a keyboard UNTIL MS began offering the 2 month trial which obviously doesn't include a headset.
Playing with a cast of thousands who all utilize voice-chat - I could see where it could get frustrating not having the headset/mic. Most games allow text messaging either in game or you can do so through the dashboard but few gamers utilize it since you can also leave voice messages for friends instead.
RE Needing the remote - yes, that stinks and yes MS tried making a buck going this route. Seems like they learned how irritated it made people as the 360 won't require the remote for DVD playback.

I have heard at least one negative about the live-chat though...it's that a lot of the Xbox live crowd are total dumbsh!ts and just completely obnoxious. In fact, X-Play has a segment called "It Came From Xbox Live" where they play recordings of particularly obnoxious and stupid Xbox Live players.

You mean the X-treme mountain dew boys generate obnoxious chatter? Shocking! No wonder shooters are so popular on that system. . . log onto Live for a bit, and you'll wanna kill someone quick.

Well yeah, but by far the most obnoxious one I remember is actually a 12 year old brat screaming to his mommy about chocolate milk, or something like that. So it's not just the mountain dew boys, but wanna-be mountain dew boy spoiled brats.

I too have heard of this infamous XBox Live chatter, it's so bad that even XBots have to admit it on SysWars forums.
I mean on the PC you sometimes get weird crap chatters too every now and then (someone once told me about two people having phonesex over a game of UT2K4) but generally the experience is a lot... quieter.

Seems like rolling these jackasses up in a Katamari or having your Pikmin recycle their carcasses in an "onion" would be more fun than simply shooting them. Be nice if next-gen see's some actual interesting games online.
Off topic for a moment, but I recall a Miyamoto interview where he said the new Revolution controller would be particularly suited well for Pikmin. In Pikmin 2 we got co-op and competitive multiplayer.
Does this mean we'll have some online Pikmin game next-gen? That would be pretty effing cool.

This is my last few days with Xbox Live, I am cancelling it before I get nailed with an $80 bill for a year of it. Live is Ok I guess, It basically does what it is supposed to do, but really it is nothing more than what I do on my Gamespy account! I find my friends in the lists, chat using my mic or keyboard (In case they don't have mic's) I can even join in on a gaming session while they are playing if I want.
PS2 Online is really good online aswell, I don't need to give any personal info or Credit card...it's just hook up to the web and start a gamin'. It actually took me less time to set up my PS2 for online than it did for my Xbox!!!???
As far as Live crowd being retarded (Dumbsh!ts) and obnoxious, this does not surprise me, most...not all but most Xbox users in several forums seem to think their Sh!t don't stink, they are the coolest thing EVAR and just have this hard-on for picking on "n00bs".
I just don't really see the point to all this, I have grown out of that stage since...hmmmmm High School! Gadfly, I couldn't have said it better myself...."Mountain Dew X-treem" (Harold and Kumar????) This is another reason I prefer to stick to PC online. Most online gamers have grown up. I don't want to play with 12 year olds or grown ups who act like it either!
Although I do have the communicator for my PS2 (thanx Socom) and I have chatted with some real "Winners" if you know what I mean!
All in all, I think it's just these "Mountain Dew Live retards" have nothing better to do. They can't score with a girl:p so why not score in a game?
No "Real" friends to game with...so they brodcast how cool they are on Live...because they got to 30th place on Halo 2, and will sit in their rooms for another month straight and try and get a better score.

Yup. Again, there is no point in paying $80 a year for something that is free on the PC, and you've got a stacked gaming PC anyway so you're good to go! You could spend that $80 to get two to four good online games for the PC instead.
They can't score with a girl so why not score in a game?
I have trouble scoring with girls (I think I'm the only guy on this forum who isn't married yet!) but I never behaved like a retard online! And hey in college I admit getting top rank in the LAN party was a goal everytime we went partying but it's all good fun and it's a real community in a LAN. Your LAN buddies will all respect you for your skills, and you theirs. Even the top rankers have respect for the low rankers who screw them over in a magnificent play.

Ha! I was just thinking about that the other day. It seems like people are on here for hours and hours(and maybe some really are), so I imagine that most of us usually post from work. And for some reason, our names stay on the User list for times when we might be not on this site.
I get stuff done fairly quickly when I get in to work, then I have a few hours to do nothing until two hours before I'm finished my day. So I browse the net or watch tube or play DS the rest of the time. And when I'm on here, I usually read what's new, post a thing or two, then go somewhere else for a coupla hours. COme back.
It's not like that at home, though. I usually come on once for a few minutes, then I play games and do stuff the rest of the time.

LOL, Cuddly, we have the same surfing/gaming habits. I have three boards or so I regularly go to at work, I leave it on pretty much the entire day and post, wait a few hours if nothing interesting is going on, and post again later after some replies have come up. And in the interim, do some work. =_=
I work as a supervisor in a call center though, so pretty much as long as none of my men are bothering me I can slack off all I want. I do have some managerial duties that need to be turned in but I usually finish those quickly enough. The real pain is talking to clients, that eats up time and you have to build your schedule around meetings with them.
Then when I get home, I just browse and post for a few minutes and then hit the games.

Ditto for myself. I really only post here if I've got downtime at my work, but since I'm often waiting on approvals for art or whatnot, I've often got a LOT of downtime.
I usually have VGR minimized in a browser, regardless of how busy I am.

I'm sure morons don't play on PC's or PS2's - just XBOX's right? I play on all of the above and find these jags all over the place. I find more on XBOX because, frankly, more people are online with the XBOX vs. PS2 or PC (when it comes to immature, young kids).
This happens the most on Halo2 which further supports my point. The more people playing - the more likely you'll run into this type of behavior.

Looks like XBOX Live will be winning an Emmy (check out my link or read what I've cut and pasted from the article below). Must be those darn Mtn. Dew drinkers casting the votes :)
Xbox Live Gets an Emmy
Move over, Charles in Charge.
by David Adams
September 12, 2005 - And you thought all that time playing Halo 2 instead of watching Boston Public was a waste. Microsoft's Xbox Live game service is being given an Emmy by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) in the category of Outstanding Achievement in Technology and Advanced New Media.
At the 57th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards on September 29, the Academy will honor Microsoft's online gaming service for Outstanding Achievement in Multiplayer-Backend Console Game Technology. The awards recognize "ground-breaking work in television broadcast and production systems, interactive television and other new media technologies."
More than two million gamers currently subscribe to Xbox Live. The service will bridge generations with the Xbox 360 this fall, which launches with expanded Live service designed for the next-gen console.

No. . . that doesn't work out mathematically. If its 10,000 people or 1 million, you're still getting paired with 16 people, so if you are running into more morons on Halo online, its because there's more idiots per capita.
Sure there are idiots everywhere, but on message boards, on live, and judging by what MS thinks of its own demographic based on its ad campaign, the devoted Xbox sports/racer/shooter crowd are the bottom of the barrel.

Yes. If anything, you should have a bigger chance of running into idiots on the PC, because PC gaming rooms go upwards of 16 (largest I've been in is 64 people in BF2, usually I get onto 24-32 player servers). More idiots per capita is right.

That's one reason I'm not a big fan of voicechat. It takes no effort to be an a-hole. I didn't run into a whole lot of that on the DC when I was playing Phantasy Star. Most of the players were so hardcore about it they didn't tolerate much nonsense. Mainly you had to worry about thieves and people using hacks for player kills, and I don't think it was a coincidence that the major number of offenders were from the U.S. So the people that already knew each other began banding together in tight units and wouldn't play with total strangers. That was probably the beginning of the end. I met a lot of great people from the U.S. Japan and Europe on PSO and the cheating put a real damper on the social aspect.
I played a few online games on PS2 and the good thing is you'll always find people dedicated to the roleplay or to the gameplay itself, even if they're not particularly good players or noobs. The bad is you'll also find an equal number of idiots. I have to wonder why they even make the effort.

If there are more idiots per capita, it has everything to do with the fact that more younger folks are on XBOX live vs. the PS2 or PC. And younger folks, by my experiences, are the ones most guilty of acting like chumps while online.

Thank you. This is my point exactly - you'll find these nuicances anywhere you play online games (the problem is not just specific to the XBOX).

This is exactly the point. There are a few younger gamers on PC online games as well, but that's it, there are fewer of them. The age demographic is simply that PC gamers are older gamers than XBox gamers. I don't know about PS2 gamers. Even in the PC demographic though there are sub demographics (like World of Warcraft tends to have more younger gamers than NWN).
I know that there are such problems anywhere you game (I mentioned this myself) but from what I can tell from XBox Live feedback the problem there seems to be larger than my experience on PC online games. PC Online gamers tend to be a lot more focused on the game and scoring rather than than trash talking, and accidental friendly fire is usually followed by apologies. PC online gaming seems a lot more civil than the horror stories I hear about XBox Live.

Sorry Mochan, I was just doing some X-bashing, I just get tired of the "Oh look at how good I am at Halo 2" attitude, Yeah, I have been gaming for years now....I practically suck at most online games...why? I just don't have time to game constantly...and if I do have a day or night to myself, without the little lady buggin' me or a party here and there, I prefer to play a "Progressive game" not just fragging for hours at a time. Really I have nothing to prove. I enjoy games but I do not need to be top score in Halo 2 to enjoy them!
Anyway, bro there are plenty of hotties out there just waitin' for ya...Grabs some new gear, get a cool hair cut, some new pearcings (Just kidding) hit up a couple of clubs and seek out that honey! Better yet, head on over to Canada here and give me shout, we'll hit up some Raves :p

"thr's no such thing as COINCIDENCE, People do meet 4 a spcl reason whtevr that maybe, i'm so glad I have u in my lyf clueless... yet smthng 2 smyl 4... :)"
To be honest it's always hard for me to intrepret these SMSs and dang that's one thing I hate about text messaging, the grammar is always broken! Is she saying I'm clueless?!Well whatever, I guess most of the reason I don't get out with girls often is... obviously... cuz I don't go out with them and instead choose to spend my time at home playing games, lol!

The fact of the matter is that I consider myself an XBOT because I play on the XBOX frequently & I enjoy doing so. I may not fit the other molds thrown out around here but that doesn't matter to me.
I believe the stereotypes are silly and unapplicable to most arguments. You play XBOX so therefore you prefer Mtn. Dew and only enjoy racers/shooters/etc. This kind of reminds me of VGR awhile back when Evolution would call Treb and the like "kitties" because they play Nintendo. Or "brownies" I think was another term used.
For the most part I've grown to accept the stereotypes but on occasion lash out against them. It was one of those moments I guess.

Actually, I believe it was Glockstar who started the whole "kitty" thing, which pretty much grew into a life of it's own after that. The "brownies", as I recall, refered to the Sony camp.
In any respect, I don't think anyone here truly believes the stereotypes we make fun of, but much like game rankings, stereotypes have become System Wars fodder - even though it's totally meaningless.
Although I do think some stereotypes are around for a reason - there ARE people who fit that bill, the Mtn. Dew, "To teh Xtreme!!!11!!one1!!" crowd who are Xbox fans. Hence, all the dumb****s on LIVE.

By that definition, once upon a time I was an xbot. The stereotypes are pretty weak, mostly but I think they exist to an extent. There's definitely been some consistent attributes I've seen in a lot of adult Nintendo posters. We even used to have a film school Nintendo fan here a couple years back. As far as hilarioius stereotypes, its funny to view Xbox vs GC as Rednecks and X-Treme ADD tweaks vs. snobby art f@gs.
I don't know of any real Sony fan stereotype. Wal-Mart shopping herd?

Haven't grabbed Guild Wars yet. I think some of the PC board boys are still playing it (though most have gone back to WoW).
I just caught a video review of Swat 4 today on Electric Playground (Reviews on the Run) and they gave the nod to this game. I am probably grabbing a copy within the week. I'll let you know, and we'll jump online with it...kul?

Sure thing. It's great for Coop but probably not what you're used to. It's very... SLOW paced. :) You'll see what I mean when we play. Going fast means dying and you can't have that in Coop!

Hey, that's cool with me, I prefer FPS games that play this way. I am currently playing Killzone on PS2, I usually play as that Sniper chick, I can sneak all over the place and even crawl though heating ducts and pick off those pesky Helghast freaks with my silenced machine/Sniper (one hit kill) pistol. WelI, I guess I am one person who really likes Killzone!
Anyway, yeah I am so up for some SWAT4, I'll keep you posted!

...I think I'm the only one on these boards who's not married!

Ah, great. Renz also has only put out on prom night but is not actually married yet.

I have trouble scoring with girls (I think I'm the only guy on this forum who isn't married yet!)
Don't do it!!!

I was almost married, but the prison she was in put a stop to conjugal visits. I figured that if I wasn't getting laid there really wasn't much point of going through with the rest of it, so I dumped her.
Let the state put up with her ass.
