I finally got my OXM in the mail, twelve days after Glock and RBH, and I was really impressed with the Team Ninja trailers for Ninja Gaiden Black and DOA4.
The DOA4 video was very cool. And it has exactly what I said once about wanting in next-gen. There is going to be a lot of interaction with what usually just is filler space, and I'm talking about the backgrounds. Tripping over stuff, being knocked through walls and floors and chicken coops, getting thrown onto the street only to have your character be hit by a car, the stuff that the girl wrestler does on the ropes. I also speak of stages that are set up almost like an action game, instead of just battling in a circular arena. But yeah, the video rocked, and am I tripping, or is it becoming the Hayabusa show?
The Ninja Gaiden Black video just blew me away with its presentation. Music to fit each scene, camera angles all over the place, intense action, tense moments, all of the action is actual gameplay footage, and some of the sickest choreography I've seen of that gameplay, which is more impressive when you know that your scenario in the game can go in a similar fashion and more, because the footage is from only a small number of levels. It's long, too.
So, once again I have to declare Ninja Gaiden the best game this generation. I just played it again to brush up on my skills for Black, and the most actiony game and maybe shiniest game ever is about to be even more than what it was before, and that was already insane. Can there be any fault to this game, when now there is a fully controllable camera, Hurricane packs, even faster gameplay, and some new cut-scenes to flesh out the story more? The original arcade game is finally here!! I nominate Ryu for President of Kicking Ass!

And what are some other videos that show off a game that have wanted to make you get the game or were just impressive in some way or another?
I like the Ico one where it's a guitar-ish banjo playing some 6/8 mello tunage with gameplay. That jam is nice.
Metal Gear Solid has had some good ones. They show some crazy gameplay that I'm not sure is all real.
And I really liked the Silent Hill 4 one that they had in OXM where it was like a slide-show of a bunck of characters and areas, all zoomy and twisty.

The GUN video from the web is probably the one where I went from not caring about the game to the game being my #2 most wanted this year. It looks like the game I wanted Red Dead Revolver to be but wasn't.
Other games:
NFS: Most Wanted - Bringing the Hot Pursuit back into the game makes the game look like it should be fun
Spartan: Total Warrior - Kind of similar to Dynasty Warriors, but with a better backdrop (I'm tired of fighting in China) and having the Rome: Total War (and Shogun) devs making the game makes it better.
Marvel Nemesis - Had no idea how this game would play until I watched a few E3 videos.
I liked the DOA4 video, though it was months later than expected. More than likely, it could be my only fighting game next gen.

I'll Give Ninja Gaiden the Credit it deserves. Best Fighting/Action game I have ever played. This game runs circles around GOW, Legacy of Kain Series, DMC series and even Onimusha. This is one sweet Xbox game! I cannot wait to get my mits on NG:Black!

Pointers. Use the Vigoorian Flail against the white ghost fish. The use a Art of Inuzama right after your combo ends. Once your spell ends, take the tiniest step to absorb your essence, and then start the flail combo and do the whole thing again and again utill all the fish are dead. They usually drop enough of the red essence to regain any from using it up during the combo, so use it up when you can.
On other enemies, use the Dabilahro. Almost nothing is as satisfying as killing twenty enemies in twenty-three seconds with the Counter attack.
And you can run on water. Pretty useless though.
And folken, are you talking about the movie? Last I saw, there wasn't a game of Advent Children.

My favorite trailer this gen has to be the DMC3 trailer they released at TGS back in 2004. Second favorite, the E3 2k4 DMC3 trailer. Funny thing is I didn't see either trailer until I picked up the game earlier this year. Both trailers can be viewed in the game itself. I was trying to avoid hyping myself up and it actually worked. I passed up DMC3 for God of War. In retrospect, a pretty stupid move considering DMC3 became my favorite action game this gen.
Other favorite trailers this gen, the original RE4 trailer back when they announced it as part of the GC five. Back when it actually seemed like RE instead of the action hybrid it eventually became. Yeah, this is a change from my original stance of how RE needed this change. I saw footage of the old build that IGN put up and I have to admit, it was a lot more intense in terms of moody atmosphere then the final product.
The original Viewtiful Joe trailer also ranks up there if only because Massimodo couldn't figure out what was going on onscreen and I had to explain it to him. He wasn't much of an oldschool gamer, methinks.

You get to play as Vergil with a completely new moveset and it seems that you get an extra costume in Nelo Angelo. Damn you Capcom and your charming extras. Those floating ghost pirrhana fish are a bit tricky. However, there are 3 tactics that I and others have used to get through them.
1) Dragon Sword, spinning slice: Equip your dragon sword. Then use that spinning slice move by: Jump forward, and tap X button while in the air. (Don't do any wall runs or homing jumps or anything like that. Just plain jumping forward towards the fish.) Ryu should do a spinning slice maneuver in midair, killing fish on either side of him in midair. Just keep jumping back and forth, back and forth, tapping your X button while in the air to do this spinning slice. If you keep jumping and don't stop inbetween, you will kill those fish and not get a single stratch on you.
2) Vigorian Flale: The Vigorian flale can whip up a major combo to allow you to kill the fish relatively easy. Just keet tapping that X button and don't stop. Note: this technique is not quite as effective as my first suggestion.
3) Wheel of Fire Ninpo. Choose your Wheel of Fire Nimpo (the very first one you got in the game), the one that encircles Ryu in fireballs and lights on fire anything Ryu touches. Activate your Ninpo. Now run around and jump through the air, touching the fish and lighting them on fire. Then repeat your Ninpo attack when you fire wheels run out. The reason this works so well is that killing these pirrhana fish often times gives Red orbs, which replenish your Ki, allowing you to do more Ninpo attacks.

Yup, Ninja Gaiden rules all. And now Black makes it rule even more. It took over the top spot once again(was Stranger's Wrath), when I started playing it through. Here's why...
I thought it wasn't possible, but Black has improved over the original in graphics as well as gameplay. I noticed the graphical upgrade when I got to Murai, and noticed that he lookes more real with improved shading and lighting. Ryu also looks a bit more dark and tough.
And Black is a step harder than regular NG on an equal difficulty. I started Black on Hard mode, and I've gotten raped a number of times by enemies that I normally would kick ass on. Maybe Ninja Dog mode will make it easier to get through with added elixers and such, but I'll never know.
Balls. Ninja Gaiden Black has an enormous pair of them. Now you fight bosses with a few extra enemies thrown into the mix. The first Alma fight really tested my nerves. I had to fight her at least eight times before I beat her, using all my elixers that I had, and it's not the added enemies included in the boss fights that make them more difficult, it's just improved A.I., which is the best I've ever seen. Halo AI has nothing on what the enemies in Ninja Gaiden Black can do. And it's not cheap AI, because you can do everything that the enemies can, plus more, it's just that they know how to fight, block, counter, and run when necessary. I've never has as much fun fighting an enemy like I have had fighting the doppelganger, and even the bosses have a new move or two.
I've yet to see any of the additional content other than a few more in-game cut scenes, but I still have seven chapters to go. I can't wait to unlock the challenge arena mode!
This game is just as fun as the day I bought the original. I'm so happy.
Dante who? Kratos wha? Ryu is the Master Ninja, B!TCHES!

A relatively simple move. Just equip Gunslinger and the shotgun and press O. It'll take care of most things around you. Positioning is extremely important though and it looks like the guy in the vid had that down because he takes care of all three demons at once.

Is Virgil a lot different than Dante when it comes to how they fight? And what weapons does he have at his disposal? I assume no gunz?

When you've fully powered up Vergil, I doubt even DMD mode would give you any difficulty. That is how overpowered Vergil is. He starts off with all of his weapons, btw. All you need to do is to purchase the moves and upgrade your projectile weapons. Vergil doesn't have guns but he can launch mystical swords at his opponents. If you power up that move, no enemy can take you on.
BTW, I've heard that when you unlock his Nelo Angelo Devil Trigger, it comes with its own unique moveset. Somebody on GAF mentioned something about him having the Alastor and Ifrit combosets from DMC1 along with the moves he used in the game. I'm a little sceptical because it sounds too good to be true. I should have him unlocked by tomorrow though and then we'll see.
As for Bloody Palace, I haven't really tried it yet. The one run through I gave it ended on room number 2001. It's set up a lot like the Bloody Palace mode in DMC2. Fire Portal will take you up one hundred levels, Lightning Portal will take you up ten levels and the Water Portal will take you up one level.

I've unlocked the Nelo Angelo Devil Trigger. It plays differently from Vergil and gives him an even more diverse moveset. Seems what I heard about Alastor and Ifrit was correct because that is exactly how he wields Beowulf and Force Edge. Haven't tried out the Yamato with him.

These past few weeks I've been whoring Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry 3 to anyone who has a slight interest in video games, Gad. They are extremely deep games that have gameplay that is only limited by your imagination. I've never played a game that gave you so much freedom to kick ass in any way possible until NG and DMC3. Go look at the advanced combat faqs for both these games on Gamefaqs, and tell me that these games are button mashing hack & slashers.
I'm sorry I hissed. I guess that I just don't see how peple can claim a game that uses five to ten functions(run, aim, attack(strength), jump, dodge, alternate weapons, and distance factors, almost any FPS) to be the greatest games ever, and Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry 3 are seen by most as "been there, done that". They know nothing of the technique involved offensively and defensively. I speak of cancels, weapon differentiation, juggling, distance specific(attacks and counters/blocks), buffering, perfect frame inputs, parrys, guard(breaks/crush/stun/stagger), launches, recovery, area affect/crowd control, individual enemy and weapon depth(strength, attack distance, speed, effectiveness vs other weapons, both your enemies and your own, plus move lists), secondary weapons(gunz and thrown weapons), and fifty other things that I don't want to go look up at Gamefaqs. All things are also going on at the same time, adding even more complexity. Even the majority of people who have bought these two games probably know nothing of how involved the gameplay really is. It's so involved, that most people do more than a few moves without fully realizing what's happening, hence the terms that are given to these games(dial-a-combo/button mashers) which are unafir and ignorant statements(even God of War is far more complex than a lot of other games, but that's the only pimpage it'll get from me, as it's still not even a quarter as deep as Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry 3). And things look to only improve for this coming generation. How could I not recommend these games, screaming it at the top of my lungs. Surely, you've felt the same way about something, refusing to let it go un-noticed?
Here's a free-form Ninja Gaiden Black vid-the pimpage continues...

I dunno about you, but FPS fit the "been there, done that" bill perfectly. That said, I still enjoy them a lot, and they are still among my favorite gaming experiences. And one thing about FPS; pretty much FPS is all about offensive techniques and positional strategy. The only defense you have is positional smarts (which is a very deep subject in itself, though this only applies to multiplayer) but aside from that it's all about offense, and offense is all about aiming quickly.

DMC on normal is an easier game than Ninja Gaiden imo, though I ended up selling my copy because of a glitch that froze the game at the end credits before I could save.

NG just started out hard right off the bat without ramping up. After the second boss on horseback it didn't seem too bad anymore, and it wasn't until something like chapter 12 with the helicopter that it got really really hard again.

I made the mistake of saving right before the horse boss with no potions and like half an energy meter. I was going to start over from the beginning and play more cautiously, but I just kept at at it until I beat the horse boss and his two goons with no life potions and half an energy bar. The best way to deal with Masakado is to kill one of his goons(the dudes that throw blue energy and teleport almost on you and attack), because he'll release a blue or red essence. If you hold the L button( or roll & jump), you should be able to move without having to pick up the essence. Rush towards Masa, and well before you get to him(or is he's rushing you) jump, and the instant you land, hold Y to get an instant essence absorbtion. Let go as needed to drop about a quarter of Masakado's life. I actually found the bow/spear wielders on horses before the Masakado fight to be more difficulty than him, although they can almost be dealt with with the same kind of pattern. Jump and insta-charge.
BTW, Mochan, Alma is going to slap you around, but don't let her get the better of you. Also, it's kind of tricky, because the game saves near her are misleading in what you'll have in your inventory before you fight her. It's always good to have a save a half an hour or so back, just in case you save near something hard unprepared.
One of my favorite combos that is affective on most regular enemies is XXYYX, followed by XY, Y-on landing UT. That's with the Dragon Sword.
Are you playing regular or Black, Mochan? I hope Black, because one of the better weapons is only on it or the hurricane packs, and that's the Lunar.
And to compare the difficulties of the two games, DMC3(US) is harder on Normal than Ninja Gaiden Normal, but DMC3 does have a difficulty before that(Easy), that actually was the original Normal overseas, so technically, it's easier because Ninja Gaiden only had Normal in the original. NGB did add the Ninja Dog difficulty, though.

I'm currently at like half a life bar and a potion. Heh time for some heavy duty practice I guess.
You know really gets me, though? The slow reload time. Ninja Gaiden loads really slow after you die, slower than most PS2 action games it seems. I am wondering why this is the case, is it because the savegame is on a slower reading harddisk and not flash memory? I mean I don't mind dying over and over if the game reloads quickly each time I die. But in Ninja Gaiden the delay gets on my nerves somehow.
What is this Jump Diving Swallow spam attack? What's the glitch in it? I better take advantage of it since I'm not getting anywhere.
Anyway, CK, I'll try your strategy, maybe I can get it to work for me. I'm playing regular, by the way.

Oblivious in Oblivion
In the new OXM, there is a killer video from Oblivion that shows all the BS that you can do to waste time. One of the things is paralyze. There were people who would just walk up to you to say hello, and then BAM! zapped, and they go tumbling down a flight of stairs. Another thing they were doing was bowling. One of the coolest tricks stacking up a bunch of books like you would dominoes, and they toppled the books, the last one hitting a piece of fruit down the stairs into a bucket, just like mini-golf! They also did things like I've done like roll bodies off of cliffs and stairs, and position dead bodies so you can use their face for a punching bag. Awesome stuff.
It might be time for me to start this game up again...
