PlayStation 3 GPU More Powerful than GeForce 7800!

NVIDIA contacted us today after we published the "PlayStation 3 GPU Less Powerful than GeForce 7800" story based on a report found at The Inquirer. Derek Perez, NVIDIA's Director of Public Relations, was kind enough to provide us the actual paragraph from the September issue of PSM. Here is the information from the blurb in question:

There's no doubting that NVIDIA's new 7800GTX is the ultimate in PC graphics technology. The card's G70 GPU, which is more than twice as powerful as two of NVIDIA's previous top-of-the-line 6800 boards, shares a lot of similar workings with the PS3's RSX chip - only it isn't as fast. Oh, and it retails for $599.

The article actually says the GeForce 7800 GTX is not as fast as the RSX graphics processing unit that NVIDIA developed for the PlayStation 3.

We apologize for any confusion and we'd like to thank NVIDIA for providing the exact info.

I hope this is the case, however does this mean that PS3 will remain brutally expensive, or will the price for this technology have dropped in price by the time of PS3s release, thus keeping a $499/$599 pricepoint?

By the time the PS3 rolls around in late 2006/early 2007 it'll have dropped in price to about $250 and be 2 generations behind the latest and greatest.

Thus is the gift and the curse of the PC scene. No matter what you get or when you get it, it'll drop in price and something better will replace it the very next day.

What's going to be the biggest factor for the PS3's gut-wrenchingly, put you in the poor house, massive high price is going to be the Blu-ray drive.

Whether or not the other components are going to be lower in price is a non-factor, since the Blu-ray drives will be new tech even by 2006 standards.

I want PS3 the most, but I am scared of this thing! I don't know when it will release (Possible 2007?....wha?), I don't know how expensive it will be, and most importantly will it be as popular as PS2 was?

As far as Killzone 2-3...whatever is concerned, I really think those visuals are possible. After playing the likes of HalfLife 2, Doom 3, FEAR (Demo) and even seeing some of the character textures in the first Killzone, I think it is very possible!

The PS3 will be even more successful than the ps2 since it has so many advantages over the other next gen consoles. Think about it, the most power, the most popular franchises, Hd movie playback just to name a few. I say 120-150 million ps3's will be sold at the end of it's lifespan maybe even more.

It really depends on how the PS3 ends up being priced.

High definition TV is far superior to regular ole TV sets yet very few have made the upgrade due to the price. Not everyone can afford a HDTV and will make do w/out one until they can afford it (or are forced into upgrading whichever comes first).

If PS3 enters the marketplace at $500 for example, do you still think it will be more successful than the PS2?

Its Sony's to lose - they definately have the inside track.

To be quite honest, I'm not too worried about a high priced PS3 since it will be in Sony's interest to popularize it's Blu-Ray technology. Sony will attempt to market it's console with these two major features games first of all and movies at second. Generally people have always anticipated exorbitant pricing from Sony's gaming products and yet still they have always been offered at much lower pricepoints than anticipated (remember the ps2 and psp) and of course Sony being the marketing giant that they are aware that it will only take a $300-400 dollar pricepoint to alert customers to the value of that console over the competition.

As for Hdtv's, I believe they're getting relatively cheap. I could get a 32" Olevia lcdtv for $999 off tigerdirect, I've even seen $895 models in Hyundai brands. If you can be content with a crt then Samsung has some real cheap 30 inchers as well and of course the price goes down even further with crt tech.

I don't believe everyone will be gaming in 1080p but I see no real stumbling block for 720p and 1080i

Although not a huge jump technologically speaking, I am giddy and excited to play all my next-gen games in a minimum of 720p, mostly 1080i (Revolution aside). Xbox currently supports 480p for most titles with a few less at 720p and very few at 1080i. I much prefer playing games in HD whenever possible.
