Nintendogs Sells a Quarter Million
Never underestimate the power of adorable.
by David Adams
September 1, 2005 - Can anyone deny the universal appeal of learning to sit, playing catch, and being undeniably cute? How else to explain the runaway success of virtual puppy simulator Nintendogs, which Nintendo reports has sold more than a quarter million copies in its first week alone.
The title, which lets players train and care for their own virtual puppy, is also driving sales of Nintendo DS hardware. Nintendogs makes extensive use of DS features like the touch screen and microphone.
"Nearly 15 percent of all DS owners bought Nintendogs in just a week, a virtually unprecedented adoption rate for any title on an established system," said Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime. "And it's also helping sell new DS hardware. Coupled with a price drop to $129.99, retailers are reporting DS sales up between one and a half and three times previous levels, and last week DS comfortably outsold our portable competitors."
Though it may be too soon to say, such hefty sales in only one week indicate Nintendogs may become a national craze here in America, as it has in Japan.
I'm sure most of you have read this by now, but what the hell, I'll post it anyways.
Apparently our Welsh Corgi, Ein, placed first in it's obedience competition, scoring us some bucks, or so my wife tells me. We now have enough cash to go and buy a second pooch in the game, so maybe I'll get to play more now that it will be twice the "work". ;)
