Industry news site Next-Gen has translated the results of a Japanese survey into the usage of the PSPs currently on the market. According to polling firm Info Plant's survey of 1,000 Japanese PSP owners, usage of the system for games greatly outpaces media consumption on Sony's new handheld.

Only 10% of the 1,000 reported that they had watched a movie on the PSP, though the survey does not make it clear whether this refers to UMD movies in specific or open MP4 format in general. However, under 50% of owners, and less than 30% of women in particular, said that they would be taking advantage of the system's video or image capabilities in any sense.

Figures are even lower when it comes to the machine's Wi-fi Internet capabilities: less than 25% of male users and 10% of females had upgraded the system's firmware to the new version 2.0 with included web browser.

Half of PSP owners said that they had not used the handheld in "some time," though the average user was reported to own 3.1 games, a reasonably healthy amount for the system's lifespan thus far.

Wow. I think that could probably transfer to this side of the Pacific as well. I have not played my PSP in quite some time. I have not upgraded the firmware. I do not use the Wi-Fi. The only movie I watched was the Spiderman movie that shipped with it. And I own 3 games plus the demo disk, which is about 3.1 games I guess.

I can understand that. As far as I'm concerned there's no reason to watch movies on the thing, not at the price they're selling them at.

If Sony were to wise up and start selling UMD's for $11.99 or so more people would pay attention to them.
