I just tried playing the F.E.A.R. demo and it couldnt run on my computer, it only work on minimal settings but looked really really bad, here are my computer sepcs

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2800 MHz

Graphics Chipset: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600XT

Memory: 512 MB

OS: Microsoft Windows XP

Im aware that my graphics card is pretty old but is everything else ok? anyway Half life 2 runs pretty good but FEAR runs awful. Also, would i need to change anything else on my PC if i got a better video card? thanks

You could probably get a Geforce 6800GT or a Radeon X800XT with that setup. The newer cards seem to be going with PCI-X only instead of the usual AGP setup, so if you wanna get one of those you'll probably have to upgrade your mobo.

Thanks , but what problems would occur if i get something newer?

You wouldn't be able to put it in your comp. ;)

I dunno, I have the Radeon 9700 (3year old card now) and Fear runs great, and I have it maxed out fully. Altough, I do get a framerate drop here and there!

Yeah but the Radeon 9700 cards are better than the Geforce 5x range. Heck I think even most of the Geforce 4x range are better than the 5x.

Yup, 9700 is definitely a cut above the 5xxx series, and yes the 4xxx Titanium series are also better than the earlier 5xxx series. Jupes, your framerate drops are likely not due to the graphics card but to the CPU, but then it depends on what parts of the game you get the FPS drops.

Whoops, I was thinking of the 6 series for some reason....Night Shift :o

Anyway, Yeah those framerate issues are definetly due to my vid card. Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining at all, I am greatful that I can even run this game, let alone run it on max settings...ok I lied...I had to ease off with the "FSAA" settings and Texture Filtering settings down to 2x for "FSAA" and 2x Anisotropic for "TF" settings.

LOL, if you can run it on max then I can run it on max. I think. Bah, my CPU and chipset are just too much of a bottleneck for my computer. What was your CPU again Jupes?

I've you've read the the devs of the game, the demo is practicly everything in the full version, minus the new weapons and maps.. They will fix some glitches aswell..

I don't think the full game is out yet, if it were I would have found it by now. :)

Yeah an Athlon 3000+ should do just nice for just about anything right now. I only have a 2200+ so again I will probably run into some CPU bottlenecks at some point but in terms of graphics I should be okay.

Up your Memory too... these days 512 MB of RAM just won't cut it......

Yeah, true. I've still got 512MB in my system and it's the noticeable weak link, especially in games like HL2 which l o a d s s o s l o w l y . . .

Hey, No worries! I have twice that in my PC and HL2 "l o a d s s o s l o w l y" in all cases in fact: before the Menu Screen, Loading the game itself and even those annoying loads in the middle of the level. I usually keep my AA at 2X and my Anisotropic the same....and the ssstttuuuuttterriinngg....wait I already talked about that in another post. :D

The difference of processor?!

Jupes, how the hell did you get the game to run on full with your video card? I have a 9800 Pro and I was getting about 10fps playing it on medium at 1280x1024. Is the difference between our processors that great? What res were you playing it at?

It was running fine at medium settings at 800x600 with no AA or AF, but I can't game at such low res settings due to how horrid it appears on my monitor (native res is 1280x1024 so the pixel interpolation makes it look really ugly).

Anyway this just reinforces my belief that my PC is in need of an upgrade, it's getting a little too old for the TFT LCD monitor I paired it up with.

heh yah i BET u get frame drops "here and there" - as in, every 3 steps in the game lol.

i run a 3ghz p4 with a gig of pc3200 ddr ram and a 9600xt and im tryin to download the FEAR demo right now. i just wanna see the graphics. it cant be any dang more intensive that doom 3, for example. it might be. dunno. im mad about pci-e cards being mainstream, my motherboard is barely a year old now and it has agp only, and now they spring this pci-e crap on us. its hard to find high end agp cards. i think the ati x700 and ati x850 i *think* are still agp. for 300 bucks. ouch.

im sick of having to upgrade video cards every 1.5 years. but i'll try fear and if it wont run decently at 800x600 on my pc? pfff i'll forget the game. even doom3 ran at 1024 and high details on my machine, and ran at no lower than 25-30 fps and wasnt choppy but once every while when a more than 1 demon threw fireballs at me. it's chop for 1 second, but that wasnt anything to bug over to me.

what are the specs for FEAR anyhow? both minimum and "best bet" specs?

whoa wait mocha.. the guy said he has a 2.8ghz cpu, a p4. i dont think that's his problem with FEAR at all! i think it's in his ram and video card. that 5600 nvidia card is trash. get a 9600xt or a 9700 pro or even a 9800 pro now, and u will see FEAR pick up greatly, and all games. also having 1 full gig of ram does wonders when your video card is like, mid range for example. i made up for my 9600xt ati card playing doom3 last christmas, by going from 512mb ram to 1 full gig. i noticed the game didnt drop under 30fps hardly at all - and 30fps looks every bit as smooth as 60.

so its his cruddy 5600 nvidia card firstly, and his 512mb ram at a CLOSE second. take my word guys... doom 3 and medal of honor pacific assault ran like choppy crap on my pc last year. i went from 512ram to 1gig ram, and a slightly better video card (from a geforce 5700 to an ati 9600xt) and i saw doom3 play *almost* perfectly, and pacific assault didnt stutter ONCE. amazing what spending 100 more bucks on 512mb more of ram, can pick up a game. but im bottlenecking... 3ghz cpu + 1gig ram + 9600xt card = the 9600xt video card is the bottleneck for me right now.

hey jupiter? sorry guys lol i havent been to this forums in months and u know im gonna get post-happy.

anyhow, jupiter... i see u love fsaa and anisotropic filtering i bet ;) thats what i gripe at pc gamers about. stop using fsaa and aniso! especially high levels. u'd be shocked, if u turn on "trilinear filtering" in a game and THEN turn on aniso to just 2x? u can see floors and walls in the distance almost perfectly without the blur. cuz aniso at even 4x, makes the ground 'wave' in the distance, as its sampling so high. 16x aniso is just stupid. 4x makes the ground look bad to me. 2x is barely OK to my eyes. fsaa comes in handy but only at lower resolutions.

example: chaos theory demo - i tried 640 res, ran at a good 50 fps or so. i figured the game is so dark anyhow, aniso isnt needed to see the ground or walls really detailed in the distance anyhow. chain link fences in games when u have aniso on, become hazy pieces of crap anyhow. so i left it at 640 for kicks, and turned on the in-game fsaa at just 1x. just 1x! the freakin game looked as good if not better, if it was running at 800x600 res and no fsaa. i got clean edges and fast frames.

i think gamerz just go overboard with fsaa and aniso lol. i mean, they get a new game (not refering to u jupiter), and they have a cruddy video card to start with. they turn on freakin 16x fsaa and 8x aniso, and then come to game forums all over the net and say MY GAME IS TOO SLOW! ok, tard, turn the fsaa down or OFF and especially the aniso. and turn shadow details to lower settings or off. chaos theory with low shadow details runs awesomely and the shadow quality barely changes between low and high settings anyhow (shrug). or go into your video card's settings and turn down the d3d and opengl texture quality to "quality" or "performance" and u will see most games pick up in frames quite a bit (sims 2 is a great example).

k, im done ranting haha.
