View Full Version : Video driver issue
Put my 6600GT in this afternoon, but have had a hell of a time with the drivers. It didn't recognize the card right away with the existing drivers, so I ran the cd install, which put the 66.93 drivers in, then tried to go back to my old 61.77 drivers. But I made some kind of a mess, because UT2004 and Morrowind were littered with artifacts. I tried installing 77.72, but that really mucked things up, because the screen went black when I tried to run UT2004. So I finally got things cleaned up, or thought I did. Reinstalled 61.77, and everything seems to run okay except Far Cry. UT2004 looks okay, Morrowind, Thief 2, Trackmania Sunrise, Starsiege (tested for OpenGL)...old games, new games, it seems fine. But Far Cry has a glitch where objects get overlayed or outlined in white intermittently (Far Cry ran perfectly on my old card on 61.77). It's kind of maddening. I can't find anything installed except for 61.77 (did multiple file searches), but I'm wondering if there isn't some residue left over from one of the other versions (66.93, 77.72) that is causing the problem. Any ideas?

Is this a new card? You may want to consider the obvious.... the card is broken. I once got a broken Ti4200, the games were littered with artifacts. I had it changed at the shop the same day and went home happy.

I haven't noticed the problem with other games though. I'm hoping it's a driver issue. I'm wondering if drivers can behave differently for some games on different cards.

Well i got a 6600 GT and i have had no problems with any of the drivers.I have a PNY Verto though so i dunno. If its working for some games and not others i wouldnt think it would be broken.I know this is alot of work for some people but honestly i would think about reformatting your HD.Start everything fresh.
I installed 71.84, and now Far Cry looks okay and some other games I tried seem fine, but when I try to launch UT2004 I get a black screen and have to hit reset. Same thing with 77.72. Grrrrrrr.....

If the problem only happens with a few games, then it's probably not broken, just a driver issue. But for you to have so many driver issues is weird.
A complete reinstall of UT2004 fixed the problem. When I couldn't uninstall it through Add/Remove or the UT2004 interface, that gave me a hint that the game might truly have gotten corrupted when I tried to run it when the drivers were messed up. Now, everything I've tried so far runs okay on 71.84. Odd that .66.93 caused glitches in both UT2004 and Morrowind, but I'd never used those drivers before and both games work on other drivers. Also odd that on this card Far Cry had problems with 61.77. But on 71.84, everything seems fine. Still, I'm not going to rush to sell my GeForce 4 on Ebay for 30 bucks just yet.
Bane, don't tell me to reformat my hard drive. I hate reformatting my hard drive! All the backing up of saved games, reformatting three logical drives, reinstalling Windows, downloading 2,357 Windows updates, getting my Internet working again, loading the drivers for my vid, sound, joystick/wheel, reinstalling games (Morrowind takes about an hour with all the mods I have to reinstall)......AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!! I'd rather tear out my eyeballs and eat them. I'd rather just give all my pc games away and buy a Gamecube. Never. NEVER!!!!

Yeah, I hate reformatting my harddrive, too!
I also had graphics issues with my Radeon 9800 Pro that I never had with my GeForce Ti4200.
My 4200 never had any graphical issues of any kind other than being too slow for some games. It was a great card.
My Radeon 9800 though, I get flickering textures and artifact "seams" (as in in some long planes where the lines polygons connect, artifacts appear as if the polygons weren't connected perfectly and air gaps were found in between).
Eh, I spoke too soon. I started UT2004 about ten times in a row with no problems. After rebooting, I started it again and got the black screen.
The annoying thing is, the system doesn't recognize the card when I run the Nvidia application for older drivers, only when I use the add hardware wizard. But the add hardware wizard doesn't list the card when you're installing older drivers (except for 61.77 I just pick 6800GT and it works), and messes up. I wanted to see if 56.72 would work. So I'm stuck with either using 61.77, which doesn't work for Far Cry, or 71.84 or higher, which can't run UT2004. And 66.93 messes up both UT2004 and Morrowind. What a pain. Never had this problem with my old card.

I realize reformatting is a pain but at the same time you have spent days trying to figure out your graphics card problems. The only real way your going to know if its going to work or not is trying the reformatt. You could have some screwed up files that makes your card seem defective.Try these drivers there leaked and not official yet but i have had a nice little boost with them.If ya aint going to reformatt try all the drivers u can then i guess so give this a shot let me know if it works out for ya

I might try those. I'm reluctant to do a ful reinstall, as there were no problems before I put this card in, and even with this card everything works fine except Far Cry on 61.77 and UT2004 on 71.84 and later. 66.93 is supposed to have D3D texture mapping issues, and I don't know of anyone who uses them, so that would explain the problems with those drivers. The weird one is UT2004 on 71.84. Sometimes, I'll get the Nvidia load screen and the game runs fine. Other times, the screen ljust goes black and the system is unresponsive. No heat issues - the card runs very cool.
I'm going bowling now. The nice thing about bowling, I've had the same ball for years, I never have to update it, or install anything on it, just roll it at the pins. Works every time!
