Is this game based on the trilogy of books or are the books based on the games. I've recently taken to RA Salvatore D&D books and was looking to pick up the game. Thanx!

The books have nothing to do with the games. Baldur's Gate had more to do with RA Salvatore because Drizzt at least showed up in it (not anything to look forward to though, just a stupid cameo done in bad taste).
The games just happen to be based in Icewind Dale, that's all. Menzoberranzan was a game that was more based on the RAS books but still not really based on them, not like how the old Goldbox Krynn games at least follow the Dragon Lance storyline canon and use the book characters in the story.

If you're looking for a RAS game try Demon Stone, this game was written by RA Salvatore and it sort of shows, the game's plot feels a lot like RAS's run and gun action style and is quite similar to the simplicity we saw in the first book of his Demon Wars trilogy (minus the iconoclastic anti-Christian story). Actually I think he wrote another book whose style was more similar but I can't think of it at the moment. HHmmm maybe I should pick up Thousand Orcs and read it sometime.

I wasn't a big fan of Demon Stone. Are there any games that feature Drizzt Do'urdern as the protaganist?
Too bad about Icewind is at least any good compared to Baulders Gate I never played it.

Well if you would like Baldersgate with no storyline then you would like Icewind.Icewind IMO is all about combat the story is there but not very intersting IMO.About the only comparison is it runs off the same graphics engine as BG

Wasn't a big fan of Demonstone either but it's the closest you can get to RAS in video games, I think.
No games starring Drizzt, unfortunately. Besides, it would probably not come out right and I'd be hating any game that does. Drizzt for me is Elmore Drizzt (the one that looks like a black man on the cover of Crystal Shard) not the crappy Easley Drizzt whose image everyone adopts. BTW Drizzt is also in the Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance game as an unlockable character.
BTW... going back to the whole story vs. game debacle we had in System Wars, wouldn't wanting to play Drizzt be a story-based yearning rather than a gameplay-based yearning? I want you to realize that, from my point of view, wanting to play something RAS is you taking your steps down the dark side of gaming where story is important, not just the gameplay. ;)
Same reason I like playing Gundam games, Hajime no Ippo games, Prince of Tennis games, Yuu Yuu Hakusho games, etc.

I knew you would bring that up. I really just wanted to see a game staring Drizzt because I think it could come off really good as gameplay mechanic. And I haven't really gotten big into D&D universe (outside of BG) as far as I know RAS is the only arthuor who has written Drizzt.

Yeah, RAS is his boy, and nobody else has the rigths to write him at the moment, I think. In fact, I'm hgihly suspicious that Drizzt is RAS's self-insertion in the fictional world. When he roleplay she probably always plays a character like Drizzt. He seems to love that noble ranger schtick.

I'm pretty sure you can play as the Dark Elf in Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance.
