May 16, 2005 - Microsoft launched yet another cannonball into the looming next generation battlefield with huge commitments and by confirming major deals to secure the potential lead it needs to foist competitor Sony Computer Entertainment from its leading market position.

At its pre-E3 new conference, Microsoft confirmed three major milestones: Japanese RPG giant Square Enix will create role-playing games for Xbox 360, starting with Final Fantasy XI with full Xbox Live compatibility. The game's content will remain the same, but obviously the graphics will see immense changes and improvements. Additional Square Enix games will follow.

"We're honored that Square Enix will make games like Final Fantasy XI for the millions of Xbox fans who have anticipated this historical moment for quite some time," said Robbie Bach, senior vice president and chief Xbox officer in the Home and Entertainment Division at Microsoft. "Together, we will chart a new course for the future of video game entertainment."

"Xbox has become a major force in video-game innovation, and we couldn't be more captivated by the Xbox 360 canvas," said Yoichi Wada, president of Square Enix. "As the world's first cross-platform online game with more than 500,000 users, 'FINAL FANTASY XI' will take advantage of the incredible power of the Xbox 360 platform, immersing gamers in spellbinding stories that come to life in high definition and through collaborative online gameplay."

Xbox 360 officially will be backward compatible with the prior system's top-selling games, said Microsoft's Vice President Peter Moore. Microsoft will pick and choose only the most popular Xbox titles from its huge backlist of games and will most likely use emulator software for those limited titles.

Microsoft and Electronic Arts will continue their working relationship into the future with the largest commitment of games at launch in console history. In development for Xbox 360 are Need For Speed: Most Wanted, The Godfather The Game, Madden NFL 2006, NBA Live 2006, Tiger Woods PGA Golf 2006, FIFA Soccer 2006, and more. EA currently has 25 games in development for Xbox 360, with more to come.

Microsoft 's first- and second-party development teams are running full force with Epic Game's Gears of War, Rare's Kameo: Elements of Power and Perfect Dark Zero, MGS's Project Gotham Racing 3, Phantagram's Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes, Mistwalker's Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, and Q Entertainment's Ninety-Night Nights. Gamers will also be able to experience a host of games from third-party publishers, including Call of Duty 2, Condemned: Criminal Origins, Dead or Alive 4, Dead Rising, The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Full Auto, Saint's Row, Test Drive, and Quake IV.

There are more than 160 in development for Xbox 360 from first-, second-, and third-party teams. Namco, Konami and Capcom (Dead Rising) are officially supporting the console as well.

Microsoft plans to launch its console with between 25 to 40 Xbox 360 games using a launch window that spans the first 90 days from launch. Neither the launch date and nor the price were revealed.

Following these three pillars of huge import, Microsoft balanced its Xbox 360 news with strong support for the Xbox 1. Moore announced Microsoft will have 2 million Xbox Live Subscribers by fiscal year end (June). The system will have more than 300 multiplayer titles by year's end, and 200 titles in full on the system by end of the year, with hundreds more in development for 2006. Games such as Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, Star Wars Battlefront II and Burnout Revenge will appear on Xbox Live.

These are just the first details from Microsoft's news conference. So don't fret, we'll have more details very, very soon.

If MS can support its 50 most popular games, I think most would be happy. Gaining Square Enix support might piss off Sony fans but unfortunately it means nothing to me. I hate standard RPGs

Ack, ack, ack, what a joke. B/C with titles MS handpicks. Oh, yeah, that's B/C, the MS way. This is so fricking lame, no wonder MS didn't want to say anything. Some half assed limited b/c and how are they going to implement this anyway. Pretty effin vague to me. You're going to do what, download specific emulator sotware over xbox live for each game you might have from Peter Moores' handpicked list? I wonder what the odds are of one of my xbox favorites, Deathrow being on that list. NOT!

FFXI? MS picking up sony's hand me downs yet again. This is cause for celebration. The exact same content just with better graphics, boy, does that sound familiar.

This sucks. It should be all or nothing when it comes to backward compatible. Top selling, huh? I guess they will waste time making sure crappy titles like Driv3r and Enter the Matrix are b/c only because they sold well, while most of the good, hidden gems will not be b/c.

Naw you will probably be able to get support for every xbox game at the low low price of $5 a game on xbox360's live micro payment cash register...

Limited Selection? That is pathetic, M$ dictates to the consumer what Xbox games can be played on the new Xbox...All or Nuthin'!

FF11? On Xbox 360? This surprizes me? This is going to be very big for M$! But the fact that Sony would let that series slip into M$'s hands is staggering! And I just can't picture FF games on an Xbox for some reason!...Is this just a gimmick to get PS2-3 users to switch over?...I am not convinced, PS3 will still have most of the FF series and JRPGs to enjoy!

But hey! give credit where it is due....way to go Bill!

I am happy with the limited B/C for Xbox 360 and it's best that only the best and most popular titles get to be played on the next gen console. I can play again Halo 1, Halo 2, PGR1 and 2, Madden NFL 2002 to 2005, and so many others on Xbox 360!

As for Square-Enix jumping to Xbox 360, WELCOME ABOARD! I'll buy all your games in the future and I'll be spending at least $1,200 come launch day of Xbox 360!

Blah...this type of b/c is a hell of a lot worse than the HD version-only scenario people were tossing around. At least with that I could have waited around for it to go down in price and gotten a b/c XBox 360. What a joke. Most of the XBox games I own are unpopular and almost certain to never get emmulation. Who cares if I can play Halo 2 on 360, if I still need an XBox for Deathrow? That defeats the purpose of b/c.

ugh...thank god for Sony not screwing people over. b/c back to PSone, as it should be.

Cha-ching! I'm serious, though, how the hell would this work. What company was it, that made that emulation program that was going to bring all the psone games to the dreamcast and then it turned out, you had to buy a separate emulater per game. It was whack and become a total failure.

That's stupid. If they emulate one game they should be able to emulate them all considering they run on the same hardware.

DUMB DUMB DUMB!

I am watching the keynote, and it is funny to here robbie bach tooting the praise of xbox sales in the past year and all the games coming out up too 2k6 when it is already a given they are scraping the system quite soon, and now with limited backwards compatibilty? It is more than a given that this will be even sooner than he seems to be trying to pursade the loyal xbox owners, that it will be. I have more faith in PC emulation of the xbox than anything decent in the way of b/c from the xbox360.

It was called "bleemcast" and I was actually thinking about it when I was typing out my post. The company was a the target of a nasty Sony lawsuit that eventually drained all their money and drove them out of business. I was all about the software when it was an all-encompassing emmulator, and even when they where going to release it across 4 or so discs for "optimization" purposes. In the end, I think that the individual boot-disks for MGS and Tekken 3 were all that made it out.

go to www.caustik.com and look at cxbx read up on what makes the xbox a bit tough to emulate and it will maybe become a bit more clear as to why only certain games will be emulated. Basically they are going to have to hand code a patch for each game they emulate on the 360 you can bet on that (hle is basically not an option, as the xbox accesses the graphics chip through direct system calls that have to be intercepted as opposed to just straight display lists)

That's it, bleemcast! I couldn't remember what it was called. I remember MGS and i think they did one for gran turismo. The dc guys were sooo hepped on bleemcast at the time. It was going to help sega crush the ps2.

Naturally MS wants FF11 for Xbox 360... they want Multiplayer after all, and those XBox Live Gold subscriptions.

MS's announcement that FF11 (Online) is coming out on 360 just answered a question of mine! Why they turfed True Fantasy Online....now I know!

To have two MMORPGS? One would surely die!

Does Sony still own a percentage of Square/Square Enix? If so,wouldn't that also mean that Sony will make money from every FFXI that's sold on Xbox?
