As many of you already know, Xbox 360 will probably come out this year. As soon as it's released, it will mark the birth of a new console war. I guess forums here will be more active again since, people will have new stuff to whine about. Some of you must be very excited. I, on the other hand, can use something for bordom as well. Yet, I am sitting here and reading news about next gen news. I found myself almost falling alseep. Did I mention I just woke up?
I do not believe this next console battles will spark any interest for me. Simply put, I already know Sony is going to win once again. M$ will probably be the biggest competitor for Sony in this round as well. However, M$ is heading into this war with the wrong philosophy. Releasing first does not guarantee victories. By releasing it first, M$ pretty much single handedly gives Sony its trump card. It gave up the only reason why xbox stayed alive. So, now PS3 will be more popular AND more technically advanced this time. Where does that leave Xbox 360? Custom soundtracks in game and virtual boobs, anyone? Considering it does not even have a HDD, no more porn on xbox! :( One less usage for this M$ brand junk.
I do enjoy seeing Bill Gates' rectum gets all bloody and having him crying like a little 50 years baby. But, Linux and some unknown hackers have provided that pleasure for me over the years. Also, I've develop some immunity to M$' screwups. I don't know if I still squeeze a laugh out of this one though. I need something more stimulating. Like M$ empire falling apart or what not........
Oh, yea, I almost forgot about Nintendo. Well, Nintendo will just be Nintendo. it's about Mario and his family. We'll be playing games with Mario, his brother, his love interest, his enemies, his pets on and on. Well, all we have to know is Nintendo will be around and that's pretty much all I have to say.

All that MS has to do to win me over (and just about every other anime mecha fan also into PS2s.... which is to say, all of them) is to release Super Robot Wars Alpha 3 on XBox 2

Now wait just a dog gone minute,
Thats a wonderful point u addressed i never even consided Folken.
I remember Xbox in it early days when,,,what m i saying? Even till this day i hear this same argument from Xbots: Xbox is sooo powerful, powerful than the ps2, powerful than my gameboy and atari combined. Blah blah blah. I guess i cant help but smile when these stupid xbots see their console is the least powerful. What will they do then? Run to the most powerful system or find another lame excuse to support their product loyalty?
(nintendo rocks cuz i'm brainwashed with product loyalty,)
BTW, i understand i own a xbox and MAY of used this commment in the early days of 2001 when the system was new and there was soo much hype. So yeah hypocrit me.
lol, are my comment just slicing off any shred of creditablity i had left? :D

I think it's a logical, though risky gamble to launch early. There's not a whole lot of places for M$ to place their bets, so meh... why not? Of course it's not a good thing to shave a year off your console when the industry lifespan is 5 years but that's water under the bridge now.

To be honest, the idea of paying $300-$400 for little more than some extra shine in the graphics department doesn't appeal to me. Now of course, this is only going on 360, and it's possible that PS3 and Revolution will pick up the slack and introduce some interesting hardware innovations, but as it stands I could care less. With so many great older titles under the $20, is buying new hardware really the smarter choice? $400 buys a LOT of games.
Imo, While all the console manufacturers are going to have an uphill battle because of this, MS's decision to launch early means they're going to bear the brunt of it. As most people aren't even close to being done with current gen games, I can honestly see the market just...not caring about 360.

For guys like him, and Slade, and Tashi, its not about the consoles, its about the company. For some odd reason, there's a lot of people out there with a deep seeded and disturbing hatred for MS. And the funny thing is, these people probably use Windows products. Their presence here is misleading and has nothing to do with discussing gaming in essence. Guys like this, you can see what their position will be for the entire next generation, he's already made up his mind, not based on the XBOX 360 but based on their twisted hatred of this one corporation.

Most M$ haters use Windows products because they have to! That's all there is to use pretty much, M$ dominates the PC market... Sure we have Linux, but just like the Mac systems...theres really not much out there for it!

Add that to the fact that thier launching without thier flagship title Halo, and I see serious problems for M$. If PD0 doesn't deliever, M$ is in a whole lot of trouble.

FYI, I use Linux Fedora Core 3 (I used to dual boot but I plan to run it off a laptop) and I have an Apple laptop. I use Windows because I have to. I use everything from Visual Studio to Project to Access, Power Point and Word because they are industry and academic standards across every type of business. Buggy, bloated and overpriced but industry standards nonetheless.

I have a hard time believing Sony will automatically have a techincal advantage over MS due to at most, a 6 month difference in Launch dates. I had a customer a month ago looking a media server, and he worked for Nvidia. He was very tight-lipped on details about the PS3 but it seemed pretty clear, they are done creating a GPU for the PS3. What I wanted to know was if Nvidia would implement its SLI technology into the PS3, allowing gamers to upgrade their console two years down the road slightly similar to the RAM pack for the N64.

I hope no one is naive enough to think this. Sony isn't any different than MS. The only difference is that Sony hasn't dominated a market they way MS has. The way Sony forces its proprietary media on the public is ridiculous, and they do it time and time again. They don't just try to screw you, they try to DP ya. Granted, MS is no different and I am sure someone here can give anecdotal evidence for Nintendo as well. At best we can have solid competition forcing these bohemoth companies to look into the wants of the consumer to try to advance their evil schemes.

I hope that won't happen. I personally think that upgrading is for the PC. Consoles should have capabilities set it stone. If you open up upgrade avenues for consoles, then later gen games would be developed to take advantage of the greater firepower.
This would have the unfortunate effect of making Bob's unupgraded console run the game subpar compared to Joe's upgraded console. Then the convenience of the "play it as it was meant to be" trademark in consoles disappears, and we are left with a mess as devs create games that won't run properly on earlier iterations of the same console.
I'm all for SLI, but if they're going to go the SLI route, the base console should have it, and upgrades be damned.

Xbox 1.5 . . if there are still Xbox's for sale, it could still be competing with itself, too, for more budget conscious gamers.
And its not just Ps2. . .there will be a flood of advertising for DS and PsP which I feel certain will have an impact. This will be the first holiday season for PsP---MS is not launching unnoposed, they are launching against more game system choices than ever.
And then GC. . . while I wouldn't normally think of it having an impact, its always possible that the new Zelda really will be so intensely cool that it will grab a lot of attention this holiday season and maybe give people one more reason to hold off on Xbox 1.5 and wait until all three next gen systems are out in 2006.

Good point! Xbox vs. Xbox 2,
The original Xbox is still in its prime...lots of steam left over. Splinter Cell:CT looks almost next gen to me! Everytime I play that game I think "The Next Xbox is just around the corner"
I think Xbox 360 will sell decent, it will be the new rage. I will probably pass on it myself. For the past year I have had $700.00 in my Savings account reserved for PS3. I will be up early and out there waiting in line on release day! Then Nintendo will be next!

This was the biggest problem with N64, they had that slot for the Ram upgrade. In order to play newer games like Zelda: Majora'a Mask and Turok 3 you needed to upgrade! How annoying!

If console upgrading becomes a standard philosophy, then the day console gamers will say, "Screw this I'll just get a PC!" won't be too far behind.
A lot of console gamers (and quite a few of you here like MaskedGamer as I recall) hold that one of the draws of console gaming is the convenience. Just buy the game, pop it in, that's that! If consoles start having upgrades then all that convenience is thrown out the window.

Not that upgrading a PC is that hard, but there was no inconvenience, other than price, for upgrading the N64 ram. You just plugged it in a hole. No installation, drivers, hardware recognition or configuration.
A console with potential RAM upgrade would hardly take away the convenience and ease of play associated with consoles. You are never going to have game/system incompatability or the frustration of hunting for drivers and patches.

Sony has been working on the ps3 essentially since the launch of the ps2, so we're talking since march of 2000. Since the cell is an offshoot of numerous features introduced in the EE, in a way, sony and its partners have been working on cell features for 10 years. MS is using a guns for hire approach. What you got and how much is it?
MS is still using an off the shelf parts mentality, its just that the parts are newer and more current than before.
But, on a tech front, what can MS bring that lets say, NIntendo wont' be able to match or better. Forget about MS outdoing Sony on the tech front, they won't even be able to outdo nintendo. Its probably the chief reason MS wants out of the gate first, before a lot of people figure that out. Look good early against old hardware and before the new hardware comes out, and you're at the bottom of the food chain.
I wouldn't touch MS just because they're out first, they have to be better than the competition, and I'm having a hard time seeing how MS is going to achieve better.

I agree, the only chance MS has is to release first and they know this. I don't think most Xbox owners are as loyal as PS2 and GC owners. The only reason I picked up the Xbox was because of technological superiority. HD support (actually 480p support - not really HD), in-game DD5.1, Hard Drive, and customizeable soundtracks were the selling point for me. Without the tech advantage, the only reason I pick up the Xbox 360 would be to tide me over until the PS3 comes out. I know most people don't spend money on gaming/tech stuff as frivolously as I do, so I see the Xbox 360 facing some significant hurdles. Unless M$ is able to market the system really well, or if they have some tricks up their sleeves, I don't think they have a prayer of beating out Sony.
The Xbox was released almost 2 years after the PS2 was, yet the graphical advantage was not quite that great. Now M$ is releasing first so I don't imagine that they have a system that can come close to Sony's graphically. They'll have to come out with some games that are great in the gameplay department to compete. However, I don't see them topping Sony's first and second party efforts.
