I've been playing many sorts of FPS games lately and this has got me thinking; which are the best FPS games for this generation of consoles?

Here is my top five:

1. Halo2 (XBOX)
2. Halo (XBOX)
3. Unreal Championship (XBOX) - not the new one, the original
4. Metroid (GCN)
5. Oddworld Strangers Wraith (XBOX)

Honorable mention- Doom3 (XBOX)

Oddworld: Strangers Wrath? Don’t you mean "EA-World"? This game was cliché crap! Some things in the game are funny (The critters on your bow caster :p )But I just cannot get past the voice of the main character, he is just plain annoying...he sounds like a dumb wrestler!

EA has bastardized Oddworld...Munch's Odyssey and the predecessors were the bread and butter of the series. This game was yet another FPS made exclusively on the FPS king.... the Xbox! Yawn! :o

Halo 1 and 2: These badboys are indeed amazing games and deserve the praise!

Half-life 2:Lest we forget...this is the pinnacle of FPS games...and Xbox will be getting it!

Doom 3: Uh! this game was just a graphics show as far as I am concerned!

Metroid: This one was decent, very nice visuals, but a bit of a let down in terms of being too repetitive at times!

I think Halo 1& 2 and Half-life 2 are the greatest achievements in this generation!

Here's my top 5.

#1 Halo2

#2 Halo

#3 Rainbow6-3(first installment. With online it was just something new to the consoles, online it was special)

#4 Brothers In Arms. This game broke away from the Rainbow6, Ghost Recon mould. It was short, but it was sweet and intense.

#5 Close Combat. Not a popular game, but it is great at what it does. Just an unforgiving military simulation on its highest setting. It simply demands more teamwork than any other game out there online, cause you can't win(for long) by yourself. And the AI is good, and actually go into shock when they are shot. Its very short on frills and cinematics, which can make it seem cheap, but once you start playing, especially online, you can't put it down. Also, it is different, which in a way today is also special.

Realistically, there are many games that could of fell below the two Halo's, just depending on mood and when you asked. There was Wolfenstein, Ghost Recon2, and some more arcade twitch shooters. I chose Rainbow6-3 and Close Combat for the effect they each had and are having online in terms of affecting the way people play.

1. Halo 2- Hell, I just re-discovered this game the other day when I went to HighImpactHalo and saw some of the crazy vids that they have.

2. Stranger's Wrath-Hey, Jupiter! EA didn't make the game, and probably had no influence in its production, they just published it. And if you're looking for originality in fps, then SW takes the cake by a mile and a half.

3.Deus Ex: The Conspiracy- First FPS I ever played. If not for this game, I never would've given FPS a chance.

4. Metroid Prime- I always did want to play as Samus in 3-D.

5. Killzone- It's really not as bad as some people wish it was. I mainly put this one because I don't have any other FPS other than Doom 3 which I haven't even really played yet.

1) Halo 1

2) Halo 2

3) Red Faction 2

Those were the only FPS I've played that didn't feel like it was "just another FPS".

1) Metroid Prime

2) Metroid Prime Echoes

These are the only two FPS games on the consoles I've ever finished because they did not make me want to throw the controller at teh wall because of the lack of precision control. Dual Analog control can go to HELL as far as I'm concerned.

I need to add another game I previously forgot to include; Return to Castle Wolfenstein (XBOX). First game I can remember that actually made console online multiplayer FPS more than a twitch fest.

That game was added in honor of Tappy who posted above. He is the one who recommended the game to me in the first place and by seeing his post, I was reminded of this great console FPS.

All great, so no order of rank:

Oddworld Strangers Wrath
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Metroid Prime
Time Splitters 2

and Halo; Sadly I didn't play any of the much raved about PC ones. I also wanted to play XIII even though its reviews weren't that great. Anyone try it?

How good does anyone think the GC exclusive FPS Geist is going to be? Should we start a pool on what the Gamerankings composite score will be?

I tried XIII and it was strange how it seemed kind of cool but lacked everything it needed to make it enjoyable. I can't explain it but it was just missing something.

Heyyy, guess that's my cue.

First my personal top... whatever...
1. Halo
2. Halo 2
3. Return To Castle Wolfenstein (Xbox) - Mostly for the online multi-player (tho' I think the sp is sweet too)
4. Serious Sam (Xbox) - the enemies in this game don't have AI (Artificial Intelligence)... they have GU (Genuine Unintelligence)

I love Doom 3 and really liked Metroid Prime (...well, a lot of it anyway), but I have a hard time calling those FPS's. I know they're first-person and I know there's a lot of shooting in them, but I just don't think that's what those two games are about; there's a lot more to them than just shooting, you know?

Same goes for Rainbow Six 3 and Ghost Recon. The fact that you fight in and with a squad - and that you can issue commands to your squadmates - has me putting these two games in a whole 'nother genre.

Deus Ex: Invisible War, Chronicles of Riddick, and Breakdown are also "FPSs" that are aren't FPSs. Or are more than... I think. Unfortunately, I'm not really qualified to say right now - I've barely touched them.

Haven't played Brothers In Arms yet (either), but I reckon I'll be picking that one up before too long. BIA is one of those SOCOM/Ghost Recon-type games from what I understand anyways.

Killzone? Haven't played it, but I'd like to give it a try... even though I dread the thought of playing FPSs with that PS2 controller. I'm sure to rent it one time before the years out.

Unreal Championship? Blech! That game right there is the epitome of what I hate about FPSs.

I could at least tolerate Unreall II, but it still gets thrown in with all of the rest of the FPSs that aren't even worth mentioning.

XIII? Almost made my list. It's almost a damn fine shooter. One thing - just one thing - prevents it from being a good - or at least an enjoyable game: it needs a "quicksave". Bad! As it is, it plays a lot like Splinter Cell. (The first one.) It's a lot of trial and error. And with every failure and/or death you are made to restart the level from the beginning. That's horse*bleep*! And it's intolerable - for an FPS. The presentation is nice - though a little gimmicky. But I was very surprised - pleasantly surprised - by how well it played and controlled. It might be a good rental... for the patient.

1. Half-Life 2... Quite possibly the greatest game ever made.

2. Metroid Prime... Still havn't played the sequel for some reason, but this game really has great atmosphere and wonderful boss battles.

3. Halo... Co-op on legendary is still a blast.

4. Chronicles if Riddick... Really takes advantage of a great character in a cool universe that was never really done justice by Hollywood.

5. Deus X : Invisible War... A few flaws, but really cool none-the-less.

Riddick, Yes...I totally forgot to mention that one! I played it more than Halflife at the time...This game was oddly addictive...Wait...I kind of look like him a bit ...not quite as big yet, but close. I just need the goggles, keep the head "bic"-ed and 6 more months of weight training....oh yeah and more $$$!

Deus ex I was going to list but I consider this more of an adventure game not really an FPS...I
freakin love this game!

My top ones for the Consoles are.

Halo 2- The multiplayer with the right players are insane

Return to Castle Wolfeinstein- This was the game that made me fal in love with Xbox live

Brother in Arms- I'm not big on tacticle single player gamers but I loved this one for my money the best WW11 game (single player) ever.

Halo-The Xbox number 1 son

Chronicles of Riddick- I really don't think this is a FPS but people are putting up MP so why not. Damn near perfect I did not have one problem with the game. It was a little short and No multiplayer keep from being rated higher.

PC

Farcry- This is the game I'm playing now. To me it's more intense than Half life 2. The combat is better and it doesn't have stupid floating Jump puzzles

UT 2k4- Got into the ball game late with this one but it's awesome. Especiall Siege mode (I think it's siege mode)

Battlefied- I can't wait for the console version of this game with voice chat. Playing this game in stunt mode (not an offical mode) but just messing with the vehicles and physics is fun as hell.

Half-life 2. The stupid jumping puzzles the stupid placing the turret part. I really like the game but it had a least 2 instances that made me not want to play it anymore. But the best physics and game worlds in any game I've played.

Call of Duty- Second best world war two game I've ever played.

What's the deal with people saying that Riddick is so short? That game took me longer to beat than Halo 2. Friggin days and hours is what it took me to beat this one, and just when I thought that it was finished, BAM!, I get thrown in the Cryo for some exercise.

And if not for the minor glitches in the cut-scenes and such, I think Riddick is still the best looking FPS.

Question 2: Why do some of you guys not like jumping in FPS? Not just you, Thumbs, I've noticed it from others in the past. Mainly back in the days of the old VGR.

Metroid Prime
Metroid Echos
Halo

Halo
Metroid Prime
Timesplitters 2
RtCW
Doom 3

Okay, now to the fun part...

I also wanted to play XIII even though its reviews weren't that great. Anyone try it?

Funny enough, I just happened to have bought XIII about 2 weeks ago, because I always wanted to play it and saw it at a great price ($14.99 CompUSA). I couldn't agree more with Horngreen's/Glockstar's reviews - it's good, but not quite perfect.

Graphically, the character models and cutscenes are pretty dern cool, but the maps so far have this...bland...been there, done that quality to them, for lack of a better explanation. The story so far is pretty interesting (I'm about 4 levels in). Controls are not so hot, but that might be to the limitations of the GC controller (yeah, I know  ).

But what Glock was saying about the quicksave is spot-friggen on. Every time you die (which can be quite a lot) you'll end up starting the level (or checkpoint) over and sitting through a longer-then-it-should-be loading sequence.

For $15 it's a good buy. If I had bought it for the original price of $50 I'd be a bit less then ecstatic.

But I think when you factor in the greatness of Halo's multi-player, you get a lot more gameplay. I thought Halo 2 was highly overrated, btw.

Jumping in FPS disorients me. I suck at jumping in platformers it's just a gameplay mechanic that I'm not good with (notice how I never refer back to the good ole days of gaming). But in FPS it just orients me to the point I can't get it without a 1000 tries and just ruins the experience for me. That's just me though!

My friend LOVES XIII. I think it's a decent game...not one of the best fps out there, but definately worth the $7-$10 you can get it for. As for Geist...I love the idea, but it doesn't seem to be coming together all that well...my guess is low 70s.
