According to this article, there are multiple source coming from Britian reporting the next Xbox's offical name will be Xbox 360.
Xbox 360......does that sound like a extreme sports title to you? Lame.

I thought the names of almost all the consoles have been a bit cheesy. Playstation, Xbox, Super Nintendo, Atari, Gameboy,Saturn, Dreamast......the only one I thought didn't sound so bad was the Sega Genesis, for some reason.

You know, I consider myself pretty immune to cheesy names. I bought a Dreamcast, Gameboy, Gamecube etc without feeling any bit odd about it. Nor do I care what others think is cool or not when I buy games. If someone wants to snicker when I buy a "kiddie" game, let them.
But XBox 360...hooo boy, why not just go the whole 9 yards and tag an "XTREME" on the end of it? The name is positively embarassing and makes a b-line for the beer-guzzling, frat-boy, middle school, "edgey-but sponsored", Bam Margera, MTV-watching gutter-waste market.
A lot of people have called the XBox the mindless blood, gore and T&A system. I disagree with that, but MS looks like it wants to cash in on that image. If this hood scoop add-on turns out to be real, then this is AWFULLY close to a console I'd sarcastically design to be marketed soley toward junior high boys.

Yeah that was taken at last year's Preakness---I lent him that really cool bracelet for the day.

I don't see how anyone can find that name appealling. It totally caters to junior high kids and their soccer moms. Bill & Ted should be the mascots.

I'll chime in and say that I don't like it either. Or, I didn't at first.
Now... I don't know... maybe the 360 actually stands for something.(?) Like the consoles of yore. You know, like "Turbografx16". Hopefully they'll tell us in a few weeks, yeah?
But, if it doesn't mean anything, if they're naming it that just because they think it sounds cool... then they got another think coming - and I'm gonna shoot them a big ole razzberry.
Either way and anyhow, come on MS... why not just name it XXbox?! ;)

I think the name is stupid az hell. But, its just a name, so who cares. I don't think many people will be laughing when the system comes out, i'd guess a lot of jaws will be open. You gotta be kidding yourself whether your a Playstation, GC, PC or XBOX fan, when you talk about 3 G5 cores, a supa dupa graphics card, HDTV native support, and online capabilities that don't exist no where in one single service, if that isn't interesting your a liar.
But the name is just bad. I understand why they didn't want to go with XBOX2. I think they should have begun using the XBOX as a brand name. This way, they keep the overall XBOX name, but get to come up with a new name for each console.
Anyway, like I said before. MS did a horrible job marketing XBOX. The XBOX name, however, was a great name for a console in my opinion. But, MS horribly marketed XBOX and it succeeded despite MS. I fully believe nothing will change, they are not good at advertising and marketing. They never had to do it with Windows or MS OFFICE. Hopefully, they wil get better.
The Nintendo Revolution is also stupid as hell. I liked the Gamecube moniker, the console was the dumbest design i've ever seen, but Gamecube was a cool name, as well as Dreamcast and Playstation, and Genesis. But now Playstation is getting a little bit long in the tooth, Revolution and XBOX 360 are just plain dumb. But, like I said earlier, probably with all of these consoles, we won't be laughing at their capabilities, okay, well maybe we will be laughing at the Revolution. Will Prince get any royalties from this thing?

Yeah, the "whole nine yards in a nutshell." You nailed it with the Bam Magera gutter-waste market.
But it makes sense. 360; the only significance to that number is it's the number of degrees in a circle. If it were the xbox 180, that would be great, because they seriously need to do an about face and change their failed direction. But no, we get Xbox 360, spinning in circles, going nowhere, like the small town gear-head you went to highschool with, and 10yrs later you see the dude, and he's still got the same Trans Am but with some spinning chrome rims and ground effects, the same mullet, and tries to get you to smoke some of that cheap, awful mex-weed he's STILL into.
360. Spinning your wheels, doing donuts, going in circles---same old crap all over again. I'll take a Revolution over that ANY day. Anyone reading the Lorne Lanning interview recently posted here should damn well be able to see the industry NEEDS a revolution and someone who will stand up for gaming, not the after-birth of board-room committee meetings.

You want MS to market their console to the "hardcore" gaming contingent, but then when it and the games don't sell you will poke fun at the machine. If MS attempts to market their console to the mainstream by giving it a mainstream name then you laugh at the name. Two questions for everyone. First, what the hell do you expect and what would you do if you were MS?

I agree, except for the Xbox 2. I think they feel if they use Xbo 2 and Sony uses PS3, the average Joe may think that the Xbox 2 is inferior to PS2, simply because of the numbers. MS should definitely keep the Xbox brand name, especially since they made a point not to put Microsoft everywhere.
I've always liked the names Xbox Next or Xbox Nexus. 360 makes me think of a Tony Hawk stunt.

Yeah ok let's make a console with a weird controller that nobody recognizes, make the console look like a cross between a transformer and a stealth bomber, but then here is the really "revolutionary" part. We will put out games that have all of the same Mascots in them that we have been pimping for the last twenty years. Gadfly, you are right in theory about the industry needing something new and exciting, but please don't kid yourself into thinking that Nintendo will provide it.

Yeah I don't like 360 either, but then again I do not represent the mainstream gamer. I understand why they went with it, but the one I like is definately NextBox.

If not Nintendo then who? The War betweeen Sony and Microsoft reminds me of the battles Intel and AMD are having. Each company is trying to outdo the other by building faster machines but thats about it. The controls will most likely stay the same and so will the gameplay. Nintendo at least is trying to bring something different to the table in terms of gameplay.
Sure the mascots stay the same but hopefully they will do something differently instead of the same old same old Master Chief, in FPS view, blowing things up in High Res. Besides why should Nintendo get rid of Mascots that are more famous and successful than rockstars. As far as I know Zelda is still used as a measuring stick for RPGs and Mario and the gang are some of the most recognizable characters out there.

I agree with your entire post except for one thing. It sounds to me that you are making the same mistake as Gadfly in assuming that what Nintendo is doing is innovation. I don't think, nor do I expect, any of the big three to actually innovate anymore. I hate to be the pessimist here, but I just don't see it at all. You said it best when you said that AT LEAST Nintendo is TRYING to be different in terms of gameplay. Call them niche, call them former pioneers, but sorry, they are no longer innovative imo.

Maybe the Xbox360 will have some kind of fly-wheel rims attached to the drive that keep spinning even after you shut the box off.

Perhaps 360 implies that the next Xbox will cover all angles of gaming ... it will become the machine for all your gaming needs.
