I didn't really like DMC3 that much. Tekken5 should do a lot better, imo. It's better than soul calibur 2. :)

Another half-million sales clocked up for GT4, while three PSP games sell over 100k

Sony's long awaited racing title Gran Turismo 4 was the best selling game in the USA for a second month running in March, while EA's Need for Speed Underground: Rivals was the top seller of the PSP launch line-up.

Gran Turismo 4 managed to clock up an impressive half million sales in its second month on sale, bringing its total US sales since launch to over 1.1 million units and placing it well ahead of any other titles in period.

The market overall saw a rise of 31.5 per cent year on year in software sales, which is well ahead of most expectations, and brings the overall growth for the leisure software industry this year so far to 15.3 per cent.

One of the biggest events of the month, of course, was the launch of the PlayStation Portable - which saw over a million units of PSP software being sold in March, with three titles breaking through the 100,000 unit mark.

Leading the field was Sony's own Twisted Metal: Head On, which was a few thousand units ahead of EA's Need for Speed Underground: Rivals, while another Sony title, Untold Legends: Brotherhood of the Blade, also broke the 100,000 barrier.

Back in the main ranking, Electronic Arts took the rest of the top three, with MVP Baseball 2005 at number two - although its low average retail price of around $30 meant that dollar revenues from the game were low - and Fight Night Round 2 at number three.

Capcom's Devil May Cry 3 came in at number four, with over a quarter of a million unit sales, while Lucasarts' Star Wars: Republic Commando was the top-ranked Xbox title in the chart, in at number six.

Sony had another game in the top ten thanks to the arrival of the critically acclaimed God of War, which was at number seven with over 200,000 unit sales; given the strong performance of both God of War and Gran Turismo 4, it's no surprise that Sony was the biggest winner in terms of market share, taking second place behind EA for the month with a year on year gain of 4.4 per cent.

Despite the debut of the PlayStation Portable, Nintendo still had a decent month with the DS - or more specifically, with WarioWare Touched, which sold over 110,000 copies during the month to become the third biggest selling handheld game.

Well DMC3 is a tough one but it has some good combat and great cinematics, The Tekken series just happens to be my personal favourite fighter. Tekken 5 seems to be doing better than Part 4 since it went back to old style tekken play.

Soul Calibur 2 was great as well, but I think Namco should really hold off the third installment for the next gen consoles, when they could simply wow us as soul calibur on the DC did. I'll still buy Soul Calibur 3 come August but I'd rather see it on PS3 but I guess that will be Soul Calibur 4. Man! those sequels could really stack can't they. :D

Actually, I think it's smart for Namco to push out another sequal of SC at the end of PS2's life cycle. Namco will probably do a lot more in SC4(if there ever going to be one) on the next generation titles. Having SC3 coming out, it gives them 1 more time to develop SC4 2. milk even more money.

Why not, right?

LOS ANGELES, April 15 (Reuters) - Video game sales rose 32 percent in the United States in March, analysts said on Friday, noting Sony Corp's top-selling "Gran Turismo 4" racing game as well as an improved supply of console hardware.

Citing figures from market researchers NPD Group, analysts also said Sony Corp.'s (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) new PlayStation Portable handheld gaming unit sold 620,000 units of hardware in the month and 1.1 million pieces of software. The PSP was released on March 24.

By comparison, Nintendo Co. Ltd.'s (7974.OS: Quote, Profile, Research) DS dual-screen handheld has sold 428,000 units this year, analysts said, quoting NPD. The DS, which costs $100 less than the PSP, launched last year.

The supply of Sony's PlayStation 2 console continued to improve, analysts said, with 495,000 sold in the month, compared with 227,000 units of Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) Xbox and 94,000 units of Nintendo's GameCube.

Microsoft has acknowledged the Xbox is in short supply, which some retailers fear may continue through the year as the company prepares to launch its next-generation console, most likely around the holidays.

"Gran Turismo 4" led game sales in the month, with more than 532,000 units sold, followed by the value-priced "MVP Baseball 2005" from Electronic Arts Inc. (ERTS.O: Quote, Profile, Research) at just under 338,000 units.

Most analysts expect U.S. software sales to grow about 5 percent in 2005, driven by growing sales for handheld devices like the PSP and DS.

So, 620k sold and 1.1 million pieces of software sold for the psp. Individual stats for games. Higher rankings for certain titles are due to dollar volume. TM:HO sold more units but rivals cost more giving it a higher dollar volume.

PSP NEED SPEED:UND RIVALS $5,973,790 121,293
PSP TWISTED METAL:HEAD ON $5,034,513 127,403
PSP UNTOLD LEGENDS:BTHRHD $4,078,071 103,010
PSP METAL GEAR ACID $3,483,612 88,362
PSP WIPEOUT PURE $3,474,053 88,083
PSP T.HAWK UNDGRND2 REMIX $3,072,220 62,312
PSP LUMINES $2,582,971 65,445
PSP RIDGE RACER $2,388,781 60,638
PSP NFL STREET 2:UNLEASHD $2,350,924 47,991
PSP TIGER WOODS PGA TOUR $2,336,386 47,310
PSP DYNASTY WARRIORS $2,286,374 46,373
PSP APE ESCAPE:ON LOOSE $2,044,120 52,197
PSP NBA $2,002,644 50,835
PSP SPIDER-MAN:THE MOVIE2 $1,970,245 40,145
PSP DARKSTALKERS: CHOAS $1,519,263 38,485
PSP GRETZKY NHL $741,333 18,896
PSP WORLD TOUR SOCCER $718,640 18,290

For comparative purposes, the software numbers for the DS launch.

NDS SUPER MARIO 64 DS $6,474,906 214,417
NDS SPIDER-MAN:THE MOVIE2 $1,456,745 40,706
NDS MADDEN NFL 2005 $1,303,238 32,889
NDS THE URBZ:SIMS IN CITY $1,029,216 26,908
NDS ASPHALT: URBAN GT $793,442 26,605
NDS FEEL THE MAGIC: XY/XX $393,678 13,270

I think konami has to be pleased with MGA's numbers, that's better than it did in japan. No love for gretzky or soccer.

Well I see your point on the cashing in aspect, Namco surely needs as much money as it can to develop next gen games including Soul Calibur 4, so I guess It makes sense that they develop SCalibur3. To be honest with you though, If they did'nt make another Soul Calibur this gen, personally I would'nt be dissapointed. Anyways, I just saw a couple of pics of SC3 and It's shaping quite nicely indeed with the three new characters that are being introduced, I guess It will auger well for Namco.

Both WipEout and Lumines deserve to sell much better than they are. The numbers don't surprise me, but I'm still disappointed.

Namco has a history of short shipping product. From other message boards, in some parts of the country people had a hard time locating ridge racer. As for lumines, hey, it's a puzzle game. The masses aren't that sophisticated. I'm suprised to see MGA outselling RR and Lumines, but then, I'm sure some of the buyers were bitterly disappointed when they found out that MGA was a card game.

I had a hard time getting RR. I could not locate it any of the EB's or Gamestops in my area. I ended up finding it at Target. That is actually the same thing that I hear about getting one of the suppossed available PsP's out there. My peeps at EB and Gamestop said that they sell out right away every time there is a shipment, but you can just walk into a Target or Walmart and find one. Very odd indeed.

Yeah, the distribution of the psp is a little bizarre. Outlets like EB sold out their allocations while mass market retailers are still sitting on launch stock. EB's new psp stock doesn't include spiderman 2 as a bonus.

Yeah well the whole thing is just further proof that Sony has a hard time with launches. Even though it seems that there was ample supply to meet the demand this time it still got slightly effed up. I was in Gamestop the other day, and there was this guy trying to buy one, and the clerk said that they were sold out. I told the guy to go to Best Buy or Target. I felt bad for Gamestop, but oh well. Hey btw---did you get MLB? I did and I started a thread in the PsP forum for you with my impressions.

NINTENDO IS GOING TO DIE!

PSP is killing DS, and GC is already dead.

Gotta give credits to sony for destroying Nintendo on the console market with PS! and now on the Handheld with PSP...

NINTENDO SUCKS!! HAHAHAHHAHAHHAA
