I haven't. My dwelling isn't wi-fi yet, but it appears from what I can see that Wipeout Pure is online enabled. I'm going to go down to the local coffee shop with the free wireless online and see if its compatible and if I can't get online with it. FREE. ONLINE. ANYWHERE THERE's a HOTSPOT.

Anyone work at a company that has wireless for its laptop users? IT's weird how console online never really motivated me but the thought of handheld online anywhere does. I think its the games. Xbox has been the serious online console, but it does so with such cliched games. I see the PsP and DS with far more potential for truly unique online gaming interaction than any of the current consoles.

OK, so the exclamation marks weren't warranted. I took the PsP with me for a cup of Earl Grey at the neighborhood coffe shop (which is a wi-fi hotspot) and tried to check out the online features.

EASY. I went into settings Networking and did the set-up, and then popped in my Fave Racing Game at the moment, Wipeout Pure. It recognized the network. I was able to go to the "Download" content section and pull up the Wipeout page which said something like "Downloads Available Soon, Comeback". . . . I hear there are going to be downloadable racing craft.

Anyway, I tried to "join" a game but it just kept searching. So I tried "start a game" and as the host you get a little lobby where you can see people join. No one did. I'm pretty certain everything was working fine. Is it possible no one is playing Wipeout online on a Saturday morning?

Same thing with the 2 player Lumines. . (which is fun as hell; they didn't short gamers like MS. . . there is an offline mode that lets you play against the computer AI.) Anyway, couldn't find any online Lumines players. I think I"m going to go back and try again tonight.

Is there maybe a different game that all the online players are into? Twisted Metal or Ridge Racer? I'm thinking of picking up one or both of those, though I feel like a gluttonous whore right now buying all this stuff. I really like Twisted Metal and Ridge Racer though.

Come on. . I know several of you regulars bought a PsP. . . have you taken it online yet?

Uhh, hate to burst your bubble, but wipeout pure isn't online enabled beyond dl content. Neither is lumines or ridge racer. The games that I know of that feature online play are Gretzky Hockey, NBA, TM:HO. Since I don't have any of those games nor do I have interest in them, I can't tell you how they are online.

Games like wipeout pure, lumines and rr feature ad hoc wireless play, similar to the DS. They don't support play over the net. I suppose they could be tunnelled, but that's another matter. Maybe if you're lucky another psp gamer will be in the coffee shop at the same time and you can hook up for some mp action.

No, I burst my own enthusiasm bubble earlier researching this. Though Ridge Racer's package says "ad-hoc/infrastructure." It's taking a bit to learn about this wi-fi crap with online and handhelds.

Apparently, I can go online with Wipeout and Lumines, but I need to set my PC to connect to www.teamxlink.co.uk . . .. as far as I can tell. Since I won't have wi-fi at home until next month, I guess I won't get to experiment with that. Unless I can buddy up with someone at the coffee shop and get them to make the necessary adjustments.

Oh well. I'll keep reseraching. It's funny. I never was motivated to play any of my xbox games online. I think the difference now isn't only the titles, but the potential for ANYWHERE ANYTIME gameplay as hotspots expand everywhere.

Well, there's a coolness factor in having a unit that has built in wifi and I don't think a lot of people appreciate it. Let's say, you bought an imac mini. Well, wifi wireless will set you back an extra $79 for that feature. Apple used to charge extra for this with all their notebooks at one time, but now they include it as standard.

When you examine consoles, an ethernet bridge to hook up my ps2 and xbox online wirelessly cost me an extra $100 canadian and I got off cheap.

The DS has the same functionality but Nintendo being nintendo, they're not letting third parties do anything until they've got something up and running which might be sometime the fourth quarter of this year. Maybe.

Anyone know how hard it is to get this thing hooked up to a WEP encrypted network? I also heard about some compatability issues with 802.11G network adpaters since the PSP uses the slower 802.11B. I think I can change my network to 802.11B, but I think that might slow down my other connections (not sure about this).

I probably should have hung on to my PSP a few days before returning it. The thing is, I wanted to exhange it for a new one at first, but Bestbuy was giving me such a hard time that I just decided to return it. They had to call someone from the game department to check to see if everything was still in the box. Took the guy 15 minutes to get up to the counter and almost 15 minutes to make sure everything was still there. Got the crap about Dead pixels being normal so I just said screw it and told them to give me my money back. After overhearing the Manager telling the CSR to put the system back on the floor for sale, I'm a little more weary of picking one up any time soon. Still really want one though.

I keep hearing bad things about Best Buy from various people.

I did get to test the Untold Legends multiplayer. I have a 2 bedroom apt. with the room on different sides of the apt., and the multiplayer worked thru 2 walls with a kitchen and living room in between. I read the DS had a really long range and I guess the PSP does too. The PSP is still in development in many regards. I'm sure there's a lot of online content coming.

I was testing playing movies. If you don't know you need to download this software: of course you need a USB cable (any old cable you use with a camera will do) or card reader.

It's all free, and the converter works great, except with wmv files. Now you can watch por.... I mean, your anime or educational videos on the go. Of course you need a big enough memory disk for really huge files.
