It amazes me that Namco has been releasing these crappy classics with 4 games per disc, then Midway goes all out and releases (at least) 23 on one disc that are all perfect emulations and prices it at 20$! I just traded in KOTOR and payed this one off...will be here on 11/3 according to Software Etc!

Here's the game list I have so far...and a few smart assed comments...

Spy Hunter - awesome, I can't wait!
Defender - never played the arcade version
Defender II - never played
Gauntlet - can't wait! 4 player support!!
Joust - outstanding!
Joust II - never played but I love the original!
Paperboy - never played the arcade version!
Rampage - AWESOME!!! I dumped MAD cash into this game at arcades!
Marble Madness - didn't even know it was an arcade game!
Robotron 2084 - never played it
Smash TV - another game I dumped LOADS of cash into...EXCELLENT!
Bubbles - ??? WTF is this???
RoadBlasters - yet another game I blew a lot of money on!
Blaster - never played
Rampart - never played
Sinistar - never played
Super Sprint - yet ANOTHER I spent too much money on in the arcades!
720 - didn't this one have a weird controller?
Toobin' - KICK ASS! THis one was GREAT!
Klax - I own this one for GBA, and have bought it for NES as well, arcade perfect port? CAn't BEAT THAT!
Splat! - never played
Satan's Hollow - wtf is this?
Vindicators - never played

I kinda wish they put on a couple more...maybe a shooter or 2...but who am I fooling. I think this is a great idea for Midway and I have gained a helluva lot of respect for Midway doing this for all consoles. If you are older than 15 you should be able to appreciate at least a few of these titles!

If anyone has a better list than this, please let me know because I've not found much about it online so this list may be incorrect or (hopefully)incomplete!

This is one title EVERYONE should be getting since it's on all 3 consoles and it's so damn cheap!

Well I must admit this is a pretty impressive list. Rampart is a great title and I'm glad to see it on the list. I've got it for my Genesis and still play it from time to time. Ah...Gautlet...Robotron...Joust...nice collection for the price.

Make sure you play Robotron2084 first. They don't make games as insanely frantic as it anymore.

PLEASE VOTE IN THE POLL EVERYBODY!

I was waiting for someone to say "gee Tappy, I thought you hated old school games" in which I'd reply "no, only refurbished old school games that sell for full price not a virtual arcade for 20$"!

Gee Tappy, I thought you hated old school games.

Anyway, I'm definately gonna get it. But when the hell are they gonna throw Smash TV on one of these compilation discs?

What do you mean WHEN? It's on this one!

Hell yeah! It is! I guess I missed it when I glanced over the list of games.

If you liked Smash TV, though, you gotta try out Robotron. It's more or less the precursor to that game, cept it's a helluva lot crazier.

For $20 thats a steal. btw 720 was a skateboarding game with a normal controller, but awkward controls. The arcade versions of those games blow away NES versions or whatever port you played.

Of all the games for all three systems THIS is probably the one I'm most looking forward to getting this year!

Tappy: I'm assuming you're pretty young to not have played the original Defender in the arcades. It came out in 1981. Be thankful. It had one jostick (for up & down movement only) and about 6 buttons to control everything else. You had to be a &*%#@ typist to play it!

DEFENDER II was released in 1982. It was called Stargate, but they lost the rights to the name when they didn't renew the patent after the movie of the same name was released. It's essentially a harder version of Defender with more enemies, a warping feature that let's you skip levels (the Stargate), and another control feature (Inviso) added.

SINISTAR was an intense shooter where you control a ship that shoots asteroids to mine an element called "Sinestite". You collect these chrystals to be used as "Sinibombs". The whole time you're doing this, little red Drones are also trying to steal them. They're using them to build a humongous living weapon (looks like a Demented Skull FAce) called SINISTAR. You're in a race against time to collect 20 crystals/Sinibombs. When the weapon's completed a loud terrifying voice screams, "I LIVE!" Sinistar then pusues you while you use your bombs to kill him - all the time spouting phrases like "RUN, COWARD!" "I HUNGER!" A simple, but intense game.

SATAN'S HOLLOW was a weird shooter modelled after Space Invaders/Gorf. You control a spaceship at the bottom of the screen that can move side to side anda little diagonallly. Above you are demon birds that circle. Some carry pieces of a bridge. You shoot the birds and when they drop the bridge pieces, you drag them to the right side to bridge a chasm to get to Satan's Castle. You have a shield button to protect your ship as well. Once you cross over, you fight Satan himself - A huge Devil's Head that breathes fire on you. A weird but fun gothic arcade game.

ROOTBEER TAPPER was originally available in TWO versions when it was released on 1983. There was one called Budweiser Tapper for bars and "risque" arcades. The controls were actually a joystick and real miniature "fountain" valves. You are a bartender who had to serve beers to a series of patrons in the a staduim, a space station, and a dive bar. You also have to clean up the empty glasses the patrons sling down the bar, before they hit the floor.

All these games were released for the PS1 on different compilation volumes but it'll be great to finally have these all on one disk (at one low price). Be sure to check out the designer retrospects and interviews - lots of cursing and fun! Except for the Gamecube version - because they can't fit on the mini DVD...MUAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!

It's good to know these classics have been packaged for newer generations. Let me know what you think of them, Tappy.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one this excited about this Zilla! I was too young to have seen Defender in the arcades, I was only born in 1980... I'd like to see more classic gaming packs like this (IE WITH THIS MANY GAMES!). I'd always considered it pretty bogus for Namco to release 4 games on a disk for 20$, going at that rate, this Midway Treasures would be approximately...125$ frikkin dollars! Then Nintendo re-releases NES games for 30$ EACH on GBA...THat's insane! Maybe Midway taking the first step here will open the beyond for devs to be a little more "giving" with thier classics.

Yeah, Tappy, you're right. The whole Namco thing is an embarrassment. When they released their compilations on the Ps1 in five volumes, they were charging upwards of $35 per disc! And they'd put Pac-man or something on a disc with 4 obscure crummy Japanese games even that were never released over here (for obvious reasons). Now the only volumes you can get are #1 and #3 - they have Pac man, Pole Position, Dig Dug, etc. That's a shame because there were some oldies on the other volumes that I wanted. There was supposed to be a boxed set for that contained ALL FIVE discs for $50 but it was never released (surprise). Now were stuck with the PS2 one which is basically volumes 1 and 3 on one disc.

I hope you're right about other companies getting on the stick regarding compilations. Sega did a great thing releasing the Sonic Collection. I have to give them credit for bringing those compilations to the Dreamcast also. Did you ever play these? Despite the fact that the ports were very shaky control wise (and had slowdown - WTF?!?), it's good that people from your generation could play these games. I

I'll tell you right now that I'm eyeing over a used SNES (I had a Genesis) because of mainly two cartridges: Super Mario Allstars and Donkey Kong Classics! I think it was great for N to release these. Why not do the same on the Cube? Just think: a Mario's Greatest hits with everything from Donkey Kong to Mario 64! Even if they spread it out over two volumes, it'd still be nice. Or how about a Metroid Collection disc? I'm really not into that game but all the fanboys out there would swoop it up! The costs of porting these over can't be that much (otherwise SEGA never would've done it). But what are the odds of this happening? I think Nintendo is probably too arrogant to allow this. Which is the one reason why it'd be great if they lost so much $ that they became a 3rd party! Then we'd get these games!

I agree with you about GBA. I don't have one yet (my friends all do) but to charge $30 for one old port...Unfortunately N has us over a barrel - where else are we going to play these? I may have to break down and get one.

Honestly, Tappy, despite my disappointement with Nintendo, if they announced that for their next system they were going to release a series of compilations called Nintendo Classics - I'd preorder that system sight unseen! How about you?

Anybody else got thoughts on this?

Nintendo should release a classic compilation. If it had a good 50 titles on it(we are talking about CONSOLE titles btw). I think it would be a great thing to combat piracy(ROM downloads) because I know many people who would eat it up.

Sorry about the Gamecube assertation. For some reason I thought I'd read the the Cube versions didn't have the extra content. My bad...

As an old school gamer I'm just glad that everyone now gets a chance to play these classics!

Thanks for the links, Tappy.

BTW, Tappy and everyone, there's a wonderful article in the new EGM where they sit down several preteen kids and have them play the clasics from Pong to Pitfall to Pacman. The results are hilarious! Anyone interested in classic gaming should check it out.

so what? You can emulate arcade games WOW! Guess what? I can emulate games as well, but it's the general thinking back to that time in my life that makes the games worth playing ntm the "80's music" and all that bonus DVD content...ntm this is easily the best gaming compilation ever made NOTHING ELSE EVEN COMES CLOSE.

Anyway, you can also play a good bit of these games if you start at www.klov.com or www.arcade-museum.com and go play the games from there via shockwave.com. I've been playing the hell out of some root beer tapper!

24th is the same scoop i got.....

I bet they didn't realize the demand for the game is going to be high.

Perhaps it was set back to give retailers a chance to order more copies for sale.

Or perhaps it was set back just to torture me. :(

My girlfriend can't wait to play Paperboy and I am dying to get a little Gauntlet action in.

Still would like to have Namco Museum for the Galaga, but I aint gonna pay $15 to $20 for an '80s arcade game.

I know Galaga was rocking cool, but it aint worth that much.

With the Midway release there is atleast five and maybe even ten games I can't wait to play.

I like the fact that it's so many frikkin games on 1 disk. I was up at my local Software Etc and I saw one of those Namco arcade games with 4 titles USED for 21.99$...they are trying to charge 25$ for Midway Arcade Treasures, I'll probably just pick it up at Wallyworld.

I'll take the easy way out and just repost part of my system wars thread about this game...

NOW QUOTING MYSELF!!

"Seriously, this game has me hooked. Rampart especially, incredible single and multiplayer, addictive, and lucky for me I'd never played it before now, Smash TV makes all other overhead shooters UP TO THIS DAY pale in comparison, and those 2 really stand out the most IMO. Klax is great as well, a puzzler that some would argue is better than Tetris, Root Beer Tapper is as addictive and extremely unforgiving as ever...actually, all the games in the compilation are unforgiving, no, beyond unforgiving...I'd say masochistic, especially Marble Madness...geez...and you think the console versions of that game were tough? HA! ...all the games still have the good FEED ME coin-op feel to them and the experience is true. At first, I HATED Spy Hunter but once I got used to the analog trigger for the gas pedal it has also become one of my favorites. I never have cared for Defender or Joust really, I was disappointed that joust didn't have a turbo flap button, Gauntlet is quite an experience 4-player(but the fact that you can always insert more coins kinda spoils the game). Paperboy is HARD, makes the Nintendo game look like cake, but then again, maybe I haven't put much time into it, neither have I with 720, however, it's great to get lit up with friends and play Toobin, Roadblasters is perfectly emulated with that addictive music and all which makes it a great game to play, Vindicators is pointless, ya, that one sucks as well, the Satan's Hollow game is ok I guess, nothing special, has some moments, I like the recharging shields made me think of Halo, Sinistar, Blaster, and Robotron are equally frantic and probably too insane for the Xbox controller( even though if enough time was put in it's probably possible) , Rampage is another game that is boring unless you are playing 3 player, Bubbles was knocked, I don't think it's that bad, it reminds me of Marble Madness.

Though one game is truly horrible...namely Splat...

I dunno why the critics are whining about the interface and presentation. I think its pretty slick. Now they DID kinda skimp out on the content for but it's nothing I'd knock points off for. The bottom line, the attract modes are all there, when you start MAT up every game will show attract mode, there is NO load times. You can switch from game to game within about 5 seconds. You can set options which also (on the Xbox version) will state whether or not your scores can be posted on LIVE (to keep everyone on an even playing ground) even though there are 2 or more classes to every game, normal, and expert type scoreboards.

This game would make a great stocking stuffer this year for all gamers considering the excellent price, hopefully we'll see a MAT volume 2 with just as much content, or better yet, maybe Midway has set a standard for compilations industry-wide. This game deserves the award for best 20$ game."

So far my favorites are:

Spy Hunter
Roadblasters
Paperboy
Defender
Joust
Smash T.V.

The rest I'm warming up too.Either way it goes this is ten times better than that lame ass Namco museum ever was.Shame Moon Patrol got left out. That would've been the icing on the cake.Other than that its a must have if you're an old school gamer. One of the best $20 dollar games on the market since VF4 EVO and Sega GT:Online.
