View Full Version : The Best Xbox games

I realize that this might not be the best time to do this right now - what with all of the great games coming to XBox over the next couple of weeks - but I've been wanting to do this for awhile now, and well, there just is no real good time to do this anymore. :p I mean, next month we get Doom 3, Midnight Club 3, Jade Empire, Unreal Championship 2, Psychonauts, Area 51, and Delta Force: Black Hawk Down (Developer Climax claims that the game will support up to 50 players over XBox Live!), you know? Like I said, theres no time like the present. ;)

And with that, here are my lists:

Top 10:
1. Halo
2. MotoGP and MotoGP 2 (tied)
3. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
4. Crimson Skies
5. Halo 2
6. KOTOR II
7. Munch's Oddysee
8. Links 2004
9. Crash 'n' Burn
10. Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy

And that's all about I can do as far as putting them in order.

I've still got a bunch of other favorites, but I just can't rank them. In no particular order:
*Voodoo Vince
*Ninja Gaiden
*Fable
*Project Gotham Racing 2
*Project Gotham Racing
*Indy Car Series 2005
*Furious Karting
*Colin McRae Rally '04 (I still need to get '05!)
*MechAssault 2
*Sudeki
*Metal Arms
*Brute Force (Oh yeah, I said it!)
*Return to Castle Wolfenstein
*NHL Hitz 20-02
*Buffy the Vampire Slayer
*Mortal Kombat: Deception
*Outlaw Volleyball
*Jet Set Radio Future
*ESPN NFL 2K5
*Pro Race Driver
*Dr. Muto
*Baldurs Gate: Dark Alliance

Then there are some other top notch games I'd like to list, but I really haven't spent enough time with to qualify them:
*Steel Battalion
*Morrowind
*Shenmue II
*Chronicles of Riddick
*Deus Ex: Invisible War
*Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow
*Rainbow Six 3

Well, there's a lot of games that I've listed before when we've done this, but now here in the fourth year, they just don't make the cut anymore. These older games are still great games in their own rite, but the XBox library has really hit it's stride over the past two years and there's almost no looking back, you know?

Anyways, I'd like to see what everybody else's list(s) look like. Here's hoping y'all participate. Do it however you'd like. ;)

Not really a list guy, but see if I can do this from the top of the dome. I'm not going to rank them though, that is impossible.

<b>

Halo2 - The best fps action game I've played
TOCA2 - Best online car racing game this generation

Brothers In Arms -only played fraction of game, but if it continues to astound, yes it is top 10, maybe top 5.

5) KOTOR I

Wow, KOTOR II over KOTOR. I gotta hear this. RBH?

[QUOTE=Cuddly Knife
10. Robotron 2084(Midway Arcade Treasures)[/QUOTE]

That ended up being the only game I would play off of that compilation - and I never even liked it before. I love Klax, but it just didn't play right on this comp. The difficulty ramping was way different from that of the NES version; and it would downright tick me off.

You have Project Gotham Racing 2, CK? Though I think you'd like that game for the racing, the main reason why I ask is because there's a mini-game on there that is very similar to Robotron 2084. I actually like it better. That's why I was able to get rid of my copy of MAT, I'd rather play this PGR2 mini-game (that I can't think of the name of...).

:

To TMG (and Darwin),

You (guys) getting MotoGP 3?

Do I even need to ask? Actually, because I've read that Climax is looking to make 3 "more accessible", I think I do. I don't know... are you feeling a little leery? Are you going to take a "wait and see approach"? Or are you getting it "for sure, no questions asked"?

Uh.....yeah. KOTOR I was better technically and the story was less confusing, but the things Obsidian did to KOTOR II (the weapon switching, better characters, optional characters depending on how the game is played) made me choose 2 over 1. I even decided to get rid of KOTOR I (you know which store it went to) since I liked part 2 better.

[*Stroking chin*] Oh yeah... and I forgot about that part where we had to split the party up and pick three characters for each team. That was great!

O.T. here, but I was just watching Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, and I recognized one of the voices of one of the guest characters in one of the episodes: it was G0T0! Easily recognizable, even without the (hollow-metal-ish) sound effects.

:

I hate my list(s). They're too danged big! If I knew that I was going to buy and play and like this many games when I bought my XBox three years ago I wouldn't have bought it. It was my original intention to buy only like 6 games. Now, I couldn't even cut my collection down to 20 games without becoming very very upset.

I wish Obsidian would have expanded the part where the team was split up......maybe use it to do entire missions on a planet....(hopefully they will do it in a possible KOTOR III)

I couldn't stand G0T0 on first play through, but next time I play KOTOR II, I will pay more attention to him/it.

My collection seems to be the opposite, I can't keep more than 15 total games (including PS2) before I start having a clearance. It will probably be different now that I'm collecting more games.

So... what do you think; what are your impressions?

Here's hoping that you complete a whole "season" before you pass final judgment tho'.

Actually, about 2 days after I edited the games I was playing in the sig line after buying some new ones, I got some great news, but now this stuff is eating all my time night and day and will be for about another week, so I haven't gamed at all, even on my DS. But I'll be playing Moto GP heavily. The 30 minutes or so I spent with it gave me little to go on, other than it looked great and the bikes were fun to ride. Very different than racing cars, to say the least. I'll let you know what I think when I get to play it more.

An old thread brought back to life by the newbie. Now that most of us have played or are playing Forza, I wonder how these top 10's and 5's would change. My guess is that Forza would be the best racer on most lists unless you still regard Moto GP or Moto GP2 as a better racing game. I never played either one personally but are wondering if I should have after seeing them appear on many fave lists.

I just picked up Oddworld Munch but haven't played it yet. Will have to give that a try as it also appeared on several of your lists.

I'm not sure if I could make an all-time best list - too many great games to choose from over the lifecycle of the XBOX.

Well my collection isnt big enough to have a top ten, as i have all 3 consoles i dont have a large collection on each of them.

For the xbox i have halo, halo 2 (starter pack), mid-town madness 3, splinter cell 3, doom 3, outrun 2, star wars jedi knight jedi academy.

My top 3 would be:

star wars
halo 2
splinter cell 3.

Let me explain my choice. I didnt put halo in there because it simply isnt good enough to be in any ranking system. The game is boring. It is not a good game. Its a tedious shoot em up. I got more fun out of serious sam than that game. I think someone above said this game was the originator on consoles. Man you are so wrong, what about goldeneye, that is the ultimate number one fps, not halo.

However, i choose halo 2 because it is simply the best online game i have ever played (except CS:Source on the PC). The single player is pretty much the same as the first one but i feel more of a challenge with this game.

Star wars got my first choice because it is so dam addictive, i spend 8 hours straight to complete it, and loved every moment. The online play is exceptional too, i love it.

My last choice was splinter cell 3 , chaos theory. This game is just awsome. I played the first one on the ps2 but i couldnt play it, it just didnt work well with the ps2 controller, the xbox controller on the other hand is alot more responsive and fits perfectly to a T.

I would have outrun 2 in there somewhere but i find it much too difficult to play in single player, i prefer to play it online. Xbox live rocks.

1. KotoR 2- Deeper party system, item creation, and some cool bugs make this game a little better than the original.

2. KotoR- Knocked console rpg's on their collective asses witha fantastic story and great gameplay.

3. Halo- Split-screen co-op on legendary is the best muliplayer experience around.

4. PDO- Beautiful and unique, it's a crime Xboxts ignored this game.

5. Espn Basketball 2k5- Favorite sports game ever.

6. Morrowind- Would be one of my favorite games of all time if it wasn't for game crashing glitches.

7. Halo 2- This game was disapointment for me, but it was still a lot of fun with multiplayer.

8. Fable- Hihgly overrated, too short and easy, it still has a lot of personality and offers a great foundation for a sequel.

You know it!

I've been trading in games left and right (RBH knows) and I've still got over 45 Xbox games. And it's ticking me off! But try as I may, there's not much I can do about it. Too many of these are GREAT games! Even knowing that I'll probably never ever play some of them again I still can't bring myself to get rid of them.

Making a Top Ten list is becoming harder and harder. I don't know if I can do it anymore.
My old list:
1. Halo
2. MotoGP and MotoGP 2 (tied)
3. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
4. Crimson Skies
5. Halo 2
6. KOTOR II
7. Munch's Oddysee
8. Links 2004
9. Crash 'n' Burn
10. Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy

See, Forza should definitely go on that list somewhere now, and Chaos Theory too... but there's only one game I'm comfortable bumping off - Crash 'n' Burn. It's too hard!

The only thing I can think to do at this point is list all of the Xbox games that I still have in my possesion - as these are the games that I can't seem to part with; these are the survivors:

1. Halo
2. MotoGP
3. MotoGP2
4. Forza Motorsports
5. Halo 2
6. KOTOR
7. KOTOR II
8. Crimson Skies
9. Munch's Oddysee
10. Psi-Ops
11. SC: Chaos Theory
12. Doom 3
13. Links 2004
14. Voodoo Vince
15. Project Gotham Racing 2
16. MechAssault 2
17. Fable
18. Furious Karting
19. Return To Castle Wolfenstein
20. Mortal Kombat: Deception
21. Crash 'n' Burn
22. NHL Hitz 20-02
23. Buffy the Vampire Slayer
24. Indycar Series 2005
25. Ninja Gaiden
26. Chronicles of Riddick
27. Dr. Muto
28. Raze's Hell
29. Conker Live & Reloaded
30. Metal Arms
31. Jet Set Radio Future
32. Sudeki
33. Brute Force
34. Outlaw Volleyball
35. Colin McRae Rally '05
36. ESPN NFL 2K5
37. Steel Battalion
38. Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance
39. Serious Sam
40. ...

... Okay. Wait. Stop. I guess it would not prudent of me to list my whole Xbox collection. Because...
A) There are some games that I haven't played yet: Morrowind (well, not really, but...), Deus Ex: Invisible War, Kingdom Under Fire, Jade Empire, Psychonauts, Stranger's Wrath, and Steel Battalion: Line of Contact
B) There are some games that I really didn't enjoy all that much but for some reason still keep (the reasons for which even I'm not entirely clear on): Panzer Dragoon Orta, DOA-XBV, DOA3

At first, I was surprised that you put Ninja Gaiden kind of low on your list, Glock. After playing the water level, I can see why (control under water waaay too sensitive)

Now I feel compelled to update my list. I'm glad I didn't prematurely put Advent Rising on my list.

New, as of June 26:

1) Mercenaries - Ninja Gaiden (old)
2) Jade Empire - Mercs (old)
3) NCAA Football series - Jade Empire (old)
4) Ninja Gaiden - KOTOR II (old)
5) KOTOR II - NCAA (old)
6) KOTOR - same
7) GTA: San Andreas - Forza (old)
8) Fable - same
9) Buffy the Vampire Slayer - same
10) Halo 2 - same

Honorable mention: Forza, SC: Chaos Theory, Batman Begins (for a Batman title, it's better than the last 2), The Punisher, Morrowind, DOA3, Fight Night

5. Burnout 3
6. Prince of Persia - Sands of Time
7. Halo

16. Mercenaries

19. Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30
20. The Chronicles of Riddick - Escape to Butcher Bay
21. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005
22. Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict
23. LEGO Star Wars
24. Tony Hawk's Underground
25. Fable.

For the most part, I agree with this list and share their opinion with most entries. Tony Hawk's Underground shouldn't be on the list in my opinion along with Tiger Woods 2005.

I would also exchange Soul Caliber 2 with Dead or Alive 3 but that's me (I'm a DOA guy). Nice to see LEGO Star Wars get its due - this really is a fun game that most may have overlooked due to it being very child friendly. I enjoyed playing it and are much older.

You're not the only one. I prefer hand to hand beatings in my fighting games than weapons, especially since I play so many other games that are weapons-based. In my ever changing list, I would also have DOA3 above Soul Calibur 2.

From that list, I think Burnout 3 and POP: Sands of Time are too high on the list. BO3 relies solely on Nitro for wins and losses (instead of driving skills), and POP's combat was a bit frustrating, IMO.

My new list (of course I have to do one) would be as follows:

1) Mercenaries
2) KOTOR
3) Jade Empire
4) NCAA Football Series
5) Ninja Gaiden

Everything starts getting jumbled after #5.

I know it's been a popular practice among VGRer for some time now to list the games that they're currently playing... and I see that you guys are doing it too. While never able to maintain one myself (I could be deeply engrossed and obsessed with a game - thinking about it at work and dying to get home and play it and everything - but then when I do finally get home I play Blob Ball!... so my list is never really accurate) I've always liked seeing it. I guess what I'm saying here is, that I'd like to give it another try. ;)

Dude! Your lists are schizophrenic! Now you've got KOTOR back up to number 2?! That must be a typo - surely you meant to say "KOTOR II".(?)

After finding my avatar, I started to rethink the KOTOR I vs II. I like almost everything about KOTOR II more than I except the bosses. Darth Malak by himself was a better boss than Darth Traya, Sion, and the silver guy with one good eye.

I know it's been a popular practice among VGRer for some time now to list the games that they're currently playing... and I see that you guys are doing it too. Wanna talk about inaccurate? I've had Ace Combat 5 listed for a month now, but have played the game only once in that time period. I really need to get it back into the normal rotation.

It would be nice to have a few "What are you playing now?" and "What are you looking forward to between now and the end of '05?" type of topics, but it would probably get ignored since 90% of VGRers only use System Wars.

Ehh... the GameSpy is okay. I like RBH's, CK's, TMG's, Gadfly's, masterchief87's, ice-t2's, and Gadfly's lists better tho'.

Hey! We still haven't seen yours! I know it's hard, but come on, give 'er the ole' college heave ho! For us? You can do eet! (Group 'em into tiers... or just list your entire keepsake library like I did... something...)

Putting me on the spot, huh? No problem, I can appease.

Here are my top 10 all-time favorite XBOX games:

1. Halo2
2. Halo
3. DOA3
4. Madden 2005 - soon to be replaced by 2006
5. Crimson Skies
6. Panzer Dragon Orta
7. Fight Night Rd. 2
8. Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 - still working through this one but already top 10 list worthy. Can't wait to get further into the title and maybe even take it online. Anyone play this game online???
9. Doom3 - yeah, I'm a sucker for FPS. Not much replay value however but thoroughly enjoyed the single player game.
10. Fable

Honorable Mentions: Forza Motorsports, Burnout 3, Mech Assault, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, DOA Ultimate, Ninja Gaiden, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, & GTA San Andreas

Sorry to be cliche in listing Halo2 and Halo as the #1 & #2 games but I honestly believe they are the two best XBOX titles. I've certainly played them the most.

Cool.

My old list
Top Ten
1. Ninja Gaiden
2. Panzer Dragoon Orta
3. Silent Hill 4
4. Halo 2
5. Shenmue 2
6. Burnout 3
7. Pandora Tomorrow
8. DOA3
9. Oddworld: Munch
10. Robotron 2084(Midway Arcade Treasures)

My new list.
1. Stranger's Wrath
2. Ninja Gaiden(will change to Black once it comes out, and probably it'll retake the number one spot)
3. Silent Hill 4
4. Psychonauts(is there no one playing this game?!)
5. Panzer Dragoon Orta
6. Halo 2
7.Brothers in Arms: RtH30
8. Doom 3(this one won't last long here)
9. Jade Empire(I imagine that this one will move up once I play it through again, and I try to use more of a rpg-style of play instad of balls-out action)
10. Morrowind GotY

My even newer list. Thanks for the link, Glock-ness monster!

1. Stranger's Wrath- For some odd reason, I have a feeling that this will be my best game of this generation. I gotta put it up there with Castlevania: SotN,. Ninja Gaiden: The Dark Sword of Chaos, and Silent Hill 4.
2. Ninja Gaiden- God of War, this. God of War that. There is no greater action-platformer than Ninja Gaiden.
3. Otogi 2- This game is the most dream-like game I've ever played. Even more dreamier than Ico. For some reason, my eyes felt really heavy while playing through this one. So much destruction. I love it!
4. Silent Hill 4- I just finished beating Fatal Frame 2. Not as scary as everyone says, and sooo slooowww. Silent Hill 4 is definitely in my top five of best stories in games. That's why it's so high on my list.
5. Halo 2- This one has moved up because, well, it's just a bad-assed game in every way. Only one fault, and that's the ending, but it has assured that I will be picking up the 360 just to see how thestory goes on.
6.- Jade Empire- Mad action and mad RPG-nes. Told you it would move up when I played it though again. I was right.
7.- Area 51- It's probably only on here because I got this game recently, but it does leave a damn good first impression. As Arcade-y as they come. I can almost call it Contra: 3-D.
8.- Panzer Dragoon Orta- I haven't played this one in ages, but when I look at my games that I think I might want to get rid of, tossing this one never comes to mind, and will never.
9.- Prince of Persia: Warrior Within-I've never played a platformer like this one before. It might've ranked higher if the game hadn't glitched out on me near the final boss. Blarg!
10.-[TIE] Metal Gear Solid 2/Fatal Frame 2-These games destroy their PS2 versions. Better control, better graphics, and more goodies make for better games. Now I own a Metal Gear on each of the current system! Woo-friggin Hoo.

1) Mercenaries
2) KOTOR
3) Jade Empire
4) NCAA Football Series
5) Ninja Gaiden

Surprisingly, my list is still the same from last time. My 6-10 would be:

6) Fable - The new Lost Chapters may not push the game up any higher, but this position is pretty solid for the game.

7) Buffy the Vampire Slayer- Still the best beat 'em up I've played this gen, and the best licensed game I've played in a long time.

8) Morrowind - No explanation needed

9) Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory - Despite the fact that the game does a poor job of trying to have a boss fight (level 9), the rest of the game is pretty fun, and a lot less frustrating than the last 2 SC.

10) Open

Honorable Mentions (not honorable enough for the #10 position, though) - The Punisher, Halo, Halo 2, GTA:SA, GTA 3, Indiana Jones, Batman Begins, Bloodrayne 2, Madden Series (especially 2004), Forza (just barely).

WTF?! So now KOTOR II doesn't even get mentioned at all?!

Whoops. Forgot about KOTOR II. I could put an "s" after the first KOTOR for both, but I think Jade Empire is better than KOTOR II, or I could put it at #6, push every thing down a notch, kick Chaos Theory off the chart to leave #10 open.....

It's a toss up.
