Dojo Update!: DS It's About Time! Part One of our Dojo Update!

This is Part One of the Dojo Update! and it revolves around the Nintendo DS. If you have no interest, that’s ok, we’ve got a many different sections being prepared as you read this right now. Read on and enjoy Part One of this Dojo Update!!

After over two weeks of a terribly agonizing dry spell here at the Dojo, we’re finally back to bring you all the old news, current news, and new news that you’ve been waiting to read about. From here on out you’ll be refreshing your memories and building new ones as you read through news post after news post spanning across the last few weeks. Let’s start off with a Soul Calibur enthusiast’s dream, if he owns a DS that is.

Big news for all you Soul Calibur fans out there. The official Nintendo magazine of Latin America has reported that Namco is currently in development on a Dual-Screen port of the classic DreamCast game, Soul Calibur. Before everybody gets their hopes up I regret to inform you that no official word has been given from Namco themselves… that doesn’t stop my hopes from skyrocketing.

Ubisoft has revealed that the DS version of Rayman will sport a multiplayer mode that supports the DS’s download capabilities. In other words; four player single-cartridge multiplayer! This certainly is intersesting news for the Rayman fans out there. What sort of multiplayer will there be? Co-op? Deathmatch? Rest assured we will be here as soon as more is uncovered, so make sure to check back later for an update on Ubisoft’s interesting hero.

Konami announced that Castlevania DS will continue the storyline from the GBA title Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow. The game sets you out on a perilous adventure to thwart an evil cult from resurrecting their evil master. From what we’ve seen so far the game continues it’s 2D style with amazing prowess. Along with the traditional visuals this next Castlevania will use the traditional methods of control though tweaking them just a bit in order to make things more interesting. The touch screen will be used to seal away enemies as you draw certain spells around them, defeating them for good. One false swipe though will result in resurgence of the enemies’ health and you’ll be forced to whack ‘em a few more times. Stay tuned to Nintendojo for further updates and expect a full preview later this week.

Konami has also announced a game based on the popular ABC Family cartoon Dragon Booster and has also shed a bit more light on Frogger: Helmet Havoc. Dragon Booster will be a 3rd person action/racing game that takes place in a fantasy world smack dab in the middle of a classic battle between good and evil. The game is scheduled for a Fall 2005 release. Also available this fall will be Frogger: Helmet Havoc. Frogger’s next adventure will put you up against Dr. Wani whose evil plans threaten to destroy your swamp. The game looks very colorful and will most certainly be a comfortable game to play.

One last bit of Konami news and we’ll move on. They have announced yet another title for the DS dubbed Lost In Blue. The game was formerly known as Survival Kids and is a unique RPG that follows the adventures of two youngin’s after a terrible incident at sea left them stranded on a deserted island. A release date is yet to be determined.

EA has officially announced work on Need for Speed Underground 2 for the Nintendo DS. The game will feature the ability to customize your own decals using a Microsoft Paint style programand the DS’s stylus. You will also be able to control your Nitros flow with the touch screen. But wait! There’s more. The game will also feature a wireless multiplayer mode for you and three of your friends. Sounds like this titles shaping up quite well. Expect our full preview shortly.

In the latest issue of Famitsu, Masahiro Sakurai revealed a slew of new details on the Nintendo DS title Meteos. There will be a single player adventure mode called “Star Trip” which will require you to travel around the planet repelling meteors as you pass through different areas. There will also be a Time Attack mode and a Simple mode. Time Attack requires you to gather as many points as possible before the time limit runs out while Simple mode gives you the use of only the touch screen and also has a time limit. Sakurai also mentioned that a single cartridge multiplayer for up to four players will be available.

Hudson has released new details on their upcoming DS title, Bomberman DS. The game will take advantage of several of the DS’s features including panning battles across the dual-screens, menu access via the touch screen, voice controlled battles, and a wireless multiplayer that allows for up to eight players. Though Bomberman isn’t the most powerful franchise out there, he has maintained a relatively loyal audience and is now breaking new ground in the handheld world. Stay tuned for more Bomberman news as his DS debut draws nearer.

Former Square-Enix employee and founder of the Final Fantasy series, Hironobu Sakaguchi, has announced that his development studio, Mistwalker, is currently in development on a simulation role-playing game for the Nintendo DS. He is currently aiming for the game to rely mostly on the touch screen as well as support up to five players. Nothing else has been said about the title but you can bet your bottom dollar we’ll be here and report to you when more is unearthed.

Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu has reported that the classic GameGear/Genesis title from the ‘90s, Develish is being remade for the Nintendo DS. Created by Starfish the game will boast greatly improved graphics, touch screen control, and wireless play. The game is currently set for an April release in Japan but any news of a stateside release is currently non-existent.

THQ has signed a deal with Nintendo in order to do work with Nintendo property on the DS. It is still unknown which franchise THQ will target though this agreement does seem to follow Nintendo’s current trend of lending out their franchises to 3rd parties. It may seem unorthodox and unnecessary to some, but this type of lending is actually helping Nintendo to build 3rd party support. With continuously growing 3rd party relationships Nintendo will hopefully regain the support they once had and apply it to the DS and Revolution. Good luck Nintendo!

EBGames has added a previously unannounced DS title to their database, Spyro DS. Although nothing has been confirmed there is a possibility that we will see our favorite purple dragon on the Nintendo DS sooner than we thought.

Age of Empires, Quad Desert Fury 2, and Texas Hold'em are all being listed as Majesco titles set for a DS release at DVDBoxOffice.com. When I first heard about Age of Empires I thought it was just a typo. Then after I heard the following two titles and was reminded Majesco are working on 3 titles for Nintendo’s new handheld, I no longer believe it’s a typo. Stay tuned as more surfaces.

The Japanese will see the DS version of Naruto, known as Naruto Saikyo Ninja Daiesshu 3, this spring. The game title follows those of the GBA versions, Naruto Saikyo Ninja Daiesshu 1 and 2, so it’s more likely than not the DS title will be a sequel to those games. There is no word on a US release just yet but fans of the series and those of you teaming with interest just keep those fingers crossed, mine are.

There has been a defect reported in the Japanese version of Wario Ware Touched!. Problems are said to be related to a few mini-games including Mame Denkyuu and Kurai Heya. In Mame Denkyuu you are required to draw a line but you are unable to do so. In Kurai Heya, lights flicker making it almost impossible to get passed the mini-game. These problems occur in just a few copies of the game and will most certainly be cleared up before a US release.

Chad Paulson, the leader of the DemaSked project at WarpPipe Technologies, has laid out a few hints toward the project. Below is his comment.

"Demasked is about culture, communication, art, voice, and most importantly, people. As the mask is slowly removed from our project, I would like everyone interested in our project to listen to the artists who have inspired our work over the years. Volume one is comprised of some of the music that inspired me, personally, in the very beginning of the project. Enjoy. - Chad Paulson"

The above quote was a description of “DemaSked Inspirations (Vol. 1)”; a collection of albums Paulson put together himself that reflect his inspiration for the DemaSked project. You can purchase Paulson’s work here. (You must be a member of iTunes in order to enjoy the music).

Newly formed Rising Star Games Limited has announced that it will release Space Invaders Revolution in Japan on March 24 for the Nintendo DS. The game will be “faithful recreation” of the original and sport two modes of play; Classic and New Age. Classic will follow the traditional Space Invader style of control while New Age will take full advantage of the touch screen and allow you to control the game with the stylus.

Rising Star Games has also announced that they are bringing another classic remake to the DS, Bubble Bobble Revolution. The next title in the series will take full advantage of the touch screen and bring forth some upgraded visuals and audio.

Another expected game from Rising Star is Harvest Moon DS. Along with previoulsy released screns, the game has been said to have the ability to interact with the GBA game Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town. While playing The DS version with FoMT in the GBA slot, players will be able to transfer certain information between the games. Specifics are unknown at this time but things are starting to get a bit interesting. Stay tuned as more unravels.

Nintendo has shed some light on three four different modes in there upcoming puzzle game Polarium. In regular mode a player must draw a straight line of the same color through tiles that are changing from black to white and vice versa. Once a straight line of a single color is made, the tiles will disappear. In Puzzle mode, one continuous line must be drawn in order to make each tile on the board the same color in order to advance. In a Challenge mode patterns will drop from the top screen and the player must clear them before they reach the bottom screen. This takes place over ten different levels. And lastly, a multiplayer mode will allow you a friend to go head to head and even share your own puzzle creations! Below is a list of features Polarium will have.

Ready...set...SWITCH! As patterns relentlessly fall from the top screen, draw lines to reverse their polarity and make them disappear. The more you clear, the faster they come...
Use your head! A hundred single-screen puzzles await! Each can be solved by drawing a single line, so take your time and think them through. Not only that, but you can design your own puzzles and send them to a friend via wireless link!
Cross out your pals! Play wireless multiplayer matches against a friend; as you clear lines, they'll appear on your opponent's screen, which is visible to you on the upper screen of your DS. Clear lines with question marks on them to get power-ups that make your lines clear faster, block out your foe's border, reverse his or her tiles and more!

And finally the last bit of DS news; a compilation of DS release dates that have been announced over the past month. Thanks for reading and we hope you continue to follow as we update on the GameCube and GameBoy, hardware and software, business and much more. Don’t miss the finale! Dojo Update!: Rumors.

Now, news/rumours of a Command & Conquer DS on the other hand... now that's interesting.

Rayman DS, from what I've read, is derived from Rayman 2, which was on the N64, DC, and PSX. I'm not a platformer fan, but Rayman 2 was a damned good game. I had the DC version, and my wife, who hates video games, used to love to sit beside me to watch that one. IMO, it's the best Rayman ever. Certainly better than Rayman 3 on the GC, and way better than any of the Rayman incarnations on the GBA. However, since I played it through twice on the DC, I doubt I'll buy it for the DS.

The two cart interaction regarding Harvest Moon is very interesting. I have Harvest Moon for the GBA, and it's an interesting, albeit unusual game. Sort of like a cross between a mellow RPG and a Sim City type game. I'll probably grab that one for sure.

One thing, though, about which there can be little argument. It's been three months since the DS launch, and new titles have been very, very slow in making their appearance. It makes me wonder if developers are hedging their bets with the PSP coming out next month.
