I've always been a big fan of mmorpgs, going back to the days of Meridian 59. I've taken a spin through The Realm, Asheron's Call, Asheron's Call 2, Ultima Online, Dark Age of Camelot and now World of Warcraft.
Let me be the first to admit that I am incredibly hooked on WOW. It has something for everyone. I tend to be a diverse player. Some days I like to farm, some days I like to quest, some days I like to just run around and explore.
It's easy to get to a point where you are just playing a game by rote but for me, I am still fascinated by the environments even three months later. I still hold the same awe when riding a griffin that I did the very first time. How they ever figured that out is beyond me but it is easily the most incredible features I've ever seen in an mmorpg.
I guess you can grind out levels but it certainly doesn't have to be boring unless you make it that way. I hit the level cap three weeks ago but at level 60 there is still content available and things to do, you just have to realize that level 60 content and activities take alot of play to achieve and are rarely solo adventures.
Blizzard will be installing Battlegrounds soon, the major pvp part of the game, and the player base is anticipating it so I'm expecting a lot of enthusiasm when that component arrives.
The crafting is a blast and very useful too. My character has made a ton of money at the auction house and it alone is a game within itself.
I spent almost three years on Asheron's Call but I find WOW far more fun to play. DAOC came off as boring and elitist, Asheron's Call 2 was a disaster.
