View Full Version : Rare Games!
I've been discovering recently that it's not so wasy anymore to just go on Ebay and pick up some old game you always wanted to try. A lot of these things are becoming collectors items. I was looking for Gothic, and it can fetch $50 or more. Today I was looking into getting Starfleet Command 3 to round out my SFC collection (I have SFC Gold, SFC 2, and Orion Pirates is on its way). It is going for $76 and $61, respectively, in a couple of auctions that each have days remaining. Holy Crap!
It's nice to know that I have some games that can fetch these kinds of numbers - or close to it. Not that I'd ever sell them, but it's cool having some game that most other people want but can't get. Now when I look for new games, I really consider those games that get great reviews, don't sell well, but have a loyal following. It's frustrating when you remember some game that was sitting on the shelf at CompUSA forever for $15, but now that you want it, you can't get it for less than an arm and a leg....if you can find it!

I sold Jane's USAF on Ebay a few months ago for $54 US, plus shipping, to some guy in Singapore (that really, really wanted the game I suppose, because shipping was not cheap). For older games it's definitely a seller's market.
I understand System Shock 2 can fetch a pretty penny these days. I know I'm holding onto my disc.

Wow, I got my copy of ss2 out of that spinning bargain rack they had in eb (I'm not sure they even have that display anymore- seems like their room for pc games is getting smaller every time I walk into the shop) for thirteen bucks I doubt more than two years ago. Wouldn't it be nice if their was a pc game store that would continue to stock old games at reasonable prices, or at least order it for you if they were out? I guess that wouldn't work though because companies probably stop distributing their games after a certain amount of down-time. Ideally, it would be great if we could just buy/download all of our games online and always be able to get them from their direct sources at less of a cost. Anyway....
I've toyed with the idea of running an online game store that sold nothing but old hard-to-get games. Acquiring the inventory would be the hard part. And you would have to do a lot of specualtion with no short-term rewards. Meaning carefully analyzing what games you think are going to be in demand in a few years but be in short supply. Then, buying up a large quantity of these games and basically letting them sit in storage until their value goes up. Still, the potantial for profits is pretty good....imagine if you had 100 copies of SFC III and could get an average of $50 a copy - that's $5,000.

I've noticed a TON of PS1 games going for a lot these days, especially some of the better well known rpgs, even my local EBX has been raising the prices of its old PS1 stock.

If you were able to stock up on Suikoden 2 back in the day you'd be a rich man. A copy goes for $300 and the kiddies are desperate enough to buy it. (in no small part thanks to me)

Funny thing Mochan, is that Suikoden 2 isn't really *that* old by todays standards, look at some of the other console stuff such as Dreamcast and N64 games, these came around the same time and most of selling for dirt cheap, granted i've seen a few titles on each going for quite a bit, Golden Eye on N64 was selling for $35 in my local Gamestop, and the EBX at the local mall was selling Skies of Arcadia for DC for $30, whilst the rest of its stock was $5-$15.
This is also one of the reasons why i'm trying to get every PS2 rpg I can get, since these too will vastly inflate in price sooner or later.

Well, Suikoden 2 is still the best RPG I've seen on the PSX, probably the best console RPG ever, regardless of age and looks!
