View Full Version : Alien VS Predator:@ the movies....
Did anyone catch the recent release of Alien vs Predator?
Im considering the DVD release, containing both theatrical & extended version with alternate beginning. Im a fan of previous movies/games, looking for more of that sci-fi fun for kids & self.
Curious to know how the overall quality of this flick is, does story line jell w/past offerings, are FX overdone, are actors convincing, does it scare like the original AvsP movie OR video game,...... or should it simply be avoided?
[PLEASE, no spoliers].
Thanks!

I don't know anything about that movie, other than the trailers I saw. BTW, just saw Pitch Black for the first time this weekend. Rented it from Netflix. Pretty good, same old killer alien theme. Wanted to get a look at Riddick in the event I pick up Escape from Butcher Bay sometime!

It is terrible. Absolutely terrible. I liked the first two Alien movies and the first Predator movie. Now I wasn't expecting anything amazing from this AvP deal, but what few hopes I had were completely destroyed. It is absolutely, completely terrible. We're talking a Catwoman or Elektra level of suckiness here.
The storyline does not even REMOTELY fit with previous movies. The AvP games have a MUCH better premise than this. A Predator shows up in an Alien-type environment with colonial marines around, why didn't the studio take something like this? Instead we get a bunch of unarmed explorers heading deep under the ice in Antarctica. STUPID!! It is not scary, the acting is abysmal, the plot is completely predictable, and for the one thing it was supposed to do--<i>put Aliens fighting against Predators</i>--there is precious little. There is about a five-minute WWF-style fight between a Predator and an Alien in the middle that's worth watching. The rest is a total waste.

Wow.
I had just committed myself to getting it just this very afternoon too. *Yikes!*
Good question - good post - E.T. Timely.

S'funny you mention that... I just viddied Chronicles of Riddick for the first time. (Rented a bunch of movies Friday night, knowing I was going to be snowed in all weekend.) I thought it was GREAT! Like you, I thought Pitch Black was just serviceable. Actually... for a sci-fi action flick, it's above average. Way above average. There aren't many movies of this type for us, you know?
I don't know why I hadn't heard more positve words about CoR. The only thing I ever heard about it - positive or negative - was that it was 'special effects extravaganza'. WTF?!? I think it's all that. And I am very impressed with the universe that they've created. The movie and the game make me like Pitch Black even more... and even make me want to go and rent the anime feature "Dark Fury".

Back to AVP... man, I really thought we sci-fi fans might've had a good thing going here - finally. I pretty much knew that the movie had to suck - but the trailers... the trailers, man... I mean, c'mon... can it really be that bad?
Hmmm... I'm sorry, but I'm still skept. I gotta see where you guys stand on other movies of this type, before I take your word on blind faith. ;) What do you think of...
1) Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones
2) Star Trek: Nemesis
3) Matrix: Revolutions
4) Alien: Resurrection
5) Starship Troopers 2
6) RoboCop 3
7) Hellboy
8) Titan A.E.
9) Ghosts of Mars (John Carpenter's,)

1) - It was okay. The whole Star Wars thing has lost its appeal to me, but I enjoyed the 2 hours I spent watching AotC.
2) - Contrary to many reviews, I liked it. Wasn't the best Star Trek movie (Undiscovered Country has that title), but it was WAY better than Insurrection, and better than First Contact.
3) - Terrible. TERRIBLE!!! I loved the first two Matrix movies (yes, Reloaded better than the first), but Revolutions was an insult.
4) - Alien franchise went in the toilet after #2.
5) - Meh, was funny and silly.
6) - Didn't see it. Only saw the first one.
7) - Oh please. I hate these types of movies.
8) - Amazing animation. Liked it for that reason. Otherwise just an airheaded cartoon, relatively amusing.
9) - Never saw it.
But I'm telling you, AvP is terrible. Really really really bad. Not the bad-yet-campy-so-I-can-enjoy-this, like Starship Troopers. Just bad.

Trust me Glock, there are no redeaming qualities to this movie whatsoever. You can't even classify it as a good popcorn flick. If you decide to watch it you'll eventually realise that you just wasted 75 minutes of your life that you won't be getting back. That's time that could've been spent on something far more entertaining and productive...like jamming a screwdriver into your gums and twisting.

Hey! What's to hate about Hellboy?!?
Other than that, I rather liked - rather agreed with - most of your answers. In particular, to #'s 2 & 3. Based on those two responses alone I to have to think that you know what you are saying, with regards to AVP. I'll trust your judgment. And Ren's.

Come on, Wrath of Khan, man. But since you liked Undiscovered Country, you must play Klingon Academy just to see the story with Christopher Plummer playing Chang again. :)

Heh, thanks! I do that too, when someone offers an opinion about a movie I try to find out what other movies they liked or didn't like. If a person, like my brother for example, liked Troy but hated Gladiator, I know their taste in movies is entirely backwards so whatever they say must be the opposite of true. :)
As for Hellboy, it just looked dumb. I didn't see it, but I'm not particularly interested. The trailers had the same visual style as LXG, and that movie was terrible. For me a movie has to be visually appealing--that doesn't mean lots of computer effects (actually computer effects usually look too cartoony), it just means the movie has to look good. It's part of what made Gladiator my all-time favourite movie. Hellboy just looked awful.
Heck, AvP also had the same style as LXG and Hellboy. (That wasn't the only problem with AvP though, trust me.)

Khan was good, second-best to Undiscovered Country. Sorry man, but "Target that explosion and <i>fire</i>" is unbeatable. :)
A buddy of mine was obsessed with Klingon Academy. I saw some of the FMVs. Looked okay, kinda campy and low-budget, but amusing. The game never really appealed to me though.
The negative consensus re: AvP gave me cause to pause on this DVD purchase [thanks all], & in its place, I ordered Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Extended Platinum series.
:( Sad I am however that AvP didnt pan out :(

KA is the only game I've ever truly pimped on this board, because no on ever plays it. I think it's the most uderrated, underplayed space sim ever. The only one with real solar systems with real 3D planets you can orbit, real space environements like rings and gas clouds that impact the ships and the fighting. Most space shooters are arcade games, but this one lets you use real strategy. I had loads of fun playing hide-and-seek inside gas giants, leading my pursuer too close to a star to cause radiation damage, knocking down shields and transporting troops on board, warping from one planet to another in a system to buy time while I repaired damage. Cool game, and not another one like it. And no one has yet to build on all of the great advances in gameplay KA made in the four or five years since it came out. The space sim genre really sucks.
" KA is the only game I've ever truly pimped on this board, because no on ever plays it. I think it's the most uderrated, underplayed space sim ever. "
...& Im glad you did Aku. I missed out on this KA somehow, despite my attraction to sims.
Based on 32 reviews here @ VGR, KA rates 4.3 out of 5.
Some reviewers commented faults/flaws aside, its a "great game".
QUESTION: How was the interface, learning curve?
The learning curve is steep. The game uses what I think they called a "VOS" command system, which is just combinations of numbered keys to issue commands. So, to bring aft shields up to 50% you key in 2-5-3 or something like that. It's the only way to do it, because if I remember right time is moving when you're in the menu screens (game speed is adjustable, though, I think....it's been awhile). The interface is okay, but some things were always confusing to me, like the energy slide bars. Anyway, the only way to play the game is to learn the VOS commands. It sounds crazy, but after you've played awhile you'll get to where you can fire off a lengthy command chain like 7-4-3-6-1 off the top of your head in the heat of battle. And once you get it all down, commanding those Klingon ships is a real trip. I don't know how this game plays in XP. Never tried it. Play it with patch 1.1. Patch 1.2 makes the game unstable, and was only added to provide force feedback support.
BTW, one of the KA reviews is mine (as Dobian)
It was inevitable that I reinstalled KA tonight for the first time in over three years. At first it had a horrible weapon lag problem when firing at close range (ironically similar to Starfleet Command). I went on the KA forum (which amazingly still exists...what die-hards!), and quickly found out that in XP you have to set every video option to the max, set it to 1280x960 (which I actually didn't want to because it makes the HUD way too small to read), and run the game under Win 98 compatibility. That did the trick. Perfectly smooth now, and it looks great! KA never looked like this on my old P3 600. Ships look sharp, not grainy anymore. Piloting through planetary rings is beautiful. I guess I'll have to pick my way through the campaign again (i have all my old saved games too). What a kick. The only downside - which I of course had totally forgoten - is that the game only recognizes joystick buttons 1-4 on my Wingman. So I can only use the stick for steering and firing, and not be able to use the other buttons for some other commands. Oh well, I got used to that the first time. The opening video of Chang was cool! The story is actually a prequel to Undiscovered Country, not just some bogus story made up to fill the game. This one's a keeper, glad I reinstalled it.
Timely post.
I was searching for KA this am. I did find a hot deal on UT2004 & Silent Hill, hopefully something will turn up on KA too.
Thnaks for info on running KA on XP.

Does it compare well to Bridge Commander? That game was okay, got repetitive after a while but the multiplayer was interesting. I'm just not big on mission-based space sims, I want a wide-open universe like X2. If you like space sims and haven't played X2, you're missing out.
I was interested in Bridge Commander when it came out, but it's focus seems different than KA. BC seems more like a cockpit simulator, kind of like a Disneyland ride LOL! I've considered X2, but it looks like such a time consumer with a lot of tedium. But I may just have a wrong impression of it.
KA is one of those "rare games" (like Gothic!) and is hard to come by. I saw an unopened copy of it on Ebay for $30 ("buy now"), and another unopened copy with bidding starting at $12. That auction is still open for another five days.
BTW, related to KA, this is a good read about why Interplay was so $@%#&! up, as well as an insight into why game engines often go bad, and games don't turn out the way they're supposed to.

Well Aku, you might want to keep your copy of KA to show off when The Antiques Road Show comes to town.........my searching has revealed two copies available thus far:
[1] $89, new in sealed box.
[2] $54, USED, "Low price for this collector item..."
...Im still searching........
I love it when I have a game that's rare. When I picked up Outcast with the manual for $13, I couldn't believe it. There's still a copy of KA on Ebay now that you might get pretty cheap.
Ok, I checked out KA on eBay.
Comes as the original 6 discs only, no box or manuals. Is the readme.txt file on disc 1 enough to get going?
What are you looking at? I see one that comes with the manual and the reference card, and another that says it's in an unopened box. Anyway, you can probably figure it out well enough in one night without the manual, but it's more fun to get it with the goodies (manual is spiral bound, and the quick ref card is handy).
This one:

INITIAL description indicates "no manuals.." also, "disc one has some scratches.." Secondary underlying description contradicts first : "..comes w/manual.." I will pass on this one.
The other KA listed on eBay has vanished overnight. PM me if you happen to find a new or like new copy for around $35 [or post it on the Bargain Hunters Thread].
Thanks Aku.

Wait, wait, wait....back to the original question. I watched the AVP movie last night. It wasn't Oscar material ;) but geeze guys, it wasn't that bad! I've seen a lot worse.
I am actually quite interested in AvP now after all the bad things I've heard about it (here and elsewhere). Call it 'car crash' syndrome if you like, but I have to watch just to satisfy my curiosity now -- it can't possibly be that bad can it?

lol, it wasn't a 2 hour movie...that was it's one saving grace. I think it's 75-85 minutes long, not even an hour and a half.
Ok, then lets do a comparison on how bad [or not so bad] AvP movie was.
Was it as bad as say...Judge Dredd [Sly Stallone] ?
http://www.mutantreviewers.com/rjudgedredd.html
Judge Dredd, "I am the LAWWWWWW" ewwwwwwwww bad movie.
Here's some movies I didn't like.
Kill Bill 1 or 2. (My husband made me watch em. lol)
Alexander, ugh.
White Chicks, sooooo not funny.
Stepford Wives, the remake Nicole Kidman
I still say AVP wasn't that bad :D
So say a bunch of other people. I don't go much by professional reviewers, but check out yahoo users rating.

I've already wasted tens of thousands of hours of my life. Two more won't make a difference. :p
Interesting reviews, some even foster encouragement to reconsider AvP as satisfying intertainment.
"....movies I didnt like :Kill Bill 1 or 2. (My husband made me watch em. lol)"
I hope you got pay back for that one Lara!
Re: Avp, I had hoped this new release would have kept pace with previous installments, comparable & relative to Ripley's [ Sigourney Weaver] first contact in Alien, battling her relentless enemy through the last four [?] Alien films.
I'll hold out on going to the theater for AvP, maybe look for it on DVD latter. Would be nice to find all things Alien & Predator bundled in a special DVD collectors set.......
There were only two good Alien films - Alien and Aliens (both of which I have on DVD). Alien 3 just didn't grab me. The theme and the setting were all wrong. Plus, it included a plot revelation which I felt ruined the ending of Aliens. Alien Resurrection just simply sucked.

I rather liked Alien 3. It was alot different than the other 2, but it had a charm all it's own. Plus it was the best LOOKING alien flick made.
You know, I didn't like some of the alien footage in Alien 3. In some places they looked obviously computer generated. I like the visceral, slimy look and feel of the aliens in the first two films.

I was dead set on not getting the AvsP movie but Lara has gave me sense of caution. I'm just as confused as before I read what everybody had to say. <>__<>
BTW, Alien is a classic and Aliens is a very good sequel, but Alien 3 did not capture me because it did not continue Ripley's story in a believable way. It was more of a dopey tangent. She just crashed. Alien Resurrection sucked in all facets. Give me a friggin break. CRAPPY
SOMEBODY COME UP WITH SOMETHING NEW!!!!!!!
But when you hear the character say, in the cheesiest possible way, "Whoever wins, we lose"

I will probably buy it as I am just a loon about the Alien movies. Even the bad ones I enjoy more than most other films. I guess it is the whole dark dripping atmosphere or something. Too bad they didn't really capture the feeling of the AvP games as they are darn good imho.

Lara I hope you lie awake at night wracked with guilt over knowing that you are <i>leading innocent movie-goers astray!!</i> There is nothing redeeming about the AvP movie, nothing at all!!
The setting is just the height of stupidity. Everyone knows--EVERYONE--that the first two Alien movies were the best. You're not going to put the movie in the jungle (a la Predator), so put it in the same setting as the Alien flicks. Honestly, why is this hard? Make the movie like Aliens and drop Predators into the mix. Voila!!
Instead they have this RETARDED idea about finding a pyramid under the ice in Antarctica, and having it full of Aliens and Predators. GAAHHH!!!
Okay let's go through the list, what was cool about the Alien and Predator movies? For Alien/Aliens, the dark claustrophobic atmosphere, hostile environment, the conspiracy-laden backstory where you KNEW the corporation was up to no good, and never knowing when the next monster was going to jump out of the ceiling. For Predator, it was the overall coolness of his gadgets, the stealthy way that he stalked his prey, and the climatic showdown between Predator and Mr California.
AvP had *none* of these attributes. The environment was not scary, there was zero backstory, the characters were complete morons. You weren't given enough of the Predator for there to be a "cool" factor (almost zero heatvision sequences), the ending was absolutely stupid. The movie is a shopping list of errors.
As for comparing it to Judge Dredd, heh, I have no idea. You're asking me to compare two pieces of turd and decide which one smells worse. I'll say that I had no hopes or expectations for Judge Dredd. AvP had a pedigree to live up to, and it failed miserably. And for the stupidest of reasons.
Okay, I'll order AVP from Netflix. Aliens and predators under the ice in Anarctica, huh? Wasn't this theme already done in some movie called The Thing? They play The Thing all the time on one of the Encore channels, so I don't even need to own it. I think I've seen it about ten times in the last year.
I will probably buy it as I am just a loon about the Alien movies. Even the bad ones I enjoy more than most other films. I guess it is the whole dark dripping atmosphere or something. Too bad they didn't really capture the feeling of the AvP games as they are darn good imho.
lol, guess that sentiment falls under the movie category "so bad they are good"
The atmosphere of original Alien movie is an attaction, I was surprised how the original AvP PC game captured it so well!
Okay, project for the weekend. :D

Alien = Meh
Aliens = LOVE IT! An all-time - like Top 30 - fave.
Alien 3 = Bad, bad, bad, movie.
Alien Resurrection = Sorry, but I kind of liked it; fun. 'Cept for the ending; ghey.
Here's some for ya:
*Reign of Fire = Could've been better (could've been longer), but I liked it; great job on the dragons.
*Resident Evil = Same as above, in that I couldn't stop myself from daydreaming about how they've could've, should've, done things - as I was watching it. The music is GREAT tho'. (And I can't stand that freak Manson.) The music, and seeing Mila in her birthday suit, have me watching this one everytime it's on; can't help it.
*Mimic = Awful. Next.
*Dreamcatcher = WTF?!? Omigosh, this movie was STOO-PID!

My copy of AvP is in my Amazon shopping cart as Im scouring the movie selections there for
any & all things JACK RYAN [Tom Clancy's hero in Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear & Present Danger....are there others??]
Sum of all Fears was the last. Ben Affleck plays Ryan.
Rainbow Six is going to be the next movie I think. Released by the end of the year in theaters.
Cool! Thanks for that! Ive been so retro I forgot about the new stuff....Sun of all Fears.
Was Sun of all Fears up to snuff w/ other Jack Ryan adventures?
The book was much more intense. Of course, that's usually the case. Sum of All Fears movie may have been toned down because of 911, I'm not sure.
I enjoyed the movie despite some obvious flaws. Affleck is the third Jack Ryan. He's not a favorite of mine. But that's a personal preference. ;) It's definitely worth adding to your collection.

Hah! Yeah!
[1] Good one! Good question, I should say.
[2] **BARF!** No, I haven't seen it. And I don't want to! Give me Excalibur, and that's it.

I didn't read all the posts, but AVP was awesome. Maybe its cuz I was hungry for an AVP film for such a long time. I mean that one scene where they go head on, and the end with queen, I felt were just worth the price of admission to see.

These two movies actually reminded me of eachother, but in King Arthur there are just as good battles as there are in Troy, but there is more of them and they're longer too. Overall, I probably enjoyed King Arthur a little more because it was more of an action movie rather than a movie for all the little girls who get to see brad in short shorts.
Okay, I watched AVP tonight. Come on, it's a hundred times better than Resurrection. We get to meet the original Bishop. The alien effects are the best ever. And Predator gets himself a hot girlfriend!

1) - Man porn. Nothing else. First sign of trouble is when there are more women in line for a bloody war movie than men. The script was terrible, the battles were weak, the movie as a whole just didn't look good, and Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom managed to display some of the worst acting I've ever seen on the big screen. Their conversation on the boat at the start of the movie nearly made me cry. The movie was just an excuse to get every Hollywood hunk to parade on-screen wearing next to nothing (and sometimes nothing).
2) - Not great, but not bad, if only because of the script. By the way, judge the R-rated director's cut, not the PG-13 Disneyfied theatrical release. The DC (it's been released on DVD) includes all the violence the director intended before Disney butchered it, and it also includes a few important deleted scenes. This movie's script was quite a bit more intelligent than Troy, it was written by the same guy who wrote Gladiator and it shows. And unlike Troy the actors are all quite good, especially Arthur and Lancelot (okay Bors sounds like he belongs at an English soccer game, but oh well). Also, in case you haven't heard anything about this movie, don't go in expecting the traditional Knights of the Round Table story. It attempts to bring an "historical" presentation of the man who might have been the basis for the King Arthur legends. Basically, they based the movie on a single footnote in history, where a Roman general named Arturius stayed behind in Britain to defend the native Britons from the invading Saxons. They took that fact and threw in lots of other characters named Lancelot, Merlin, Guinivere, etc, but don't expect it to resemble the traditional fairy tale.
Of the two movies King Arthur is undoubtedly the better one. Troy was just terrible. King Arthur would have been better with another director and without Disney ever putting their hands on it, but it still wasn't bad. At least it didn't have Orlando Bloom.

Thanks for differentiating on the two King Arthurs available. I failed to make a similar distinction on a recent [failed] purchase of Dune. I wanted the original Dune w/actor Kyle MacLachlan.......[remember Twin Peaks anyone?]. Instead, I picked up the made for seriesTV Children of Dune :p

That Dune miniseries was awesome. Don't know about the Children of Dune though.

So did you end up buying the DVD, E.T.?
I hope not. For your sake.
Ren and Hi were right, AVP was dumb! It just went on Hollywood Videos MVP list so I finally saw just it. Saw it for virtually nothing, but I still feel jipped. There were only two good parts in the whole movie! And both parts together totalled up to about two minutes. Boooo.

Almost did Glock! I pulled it out of "my cart" on Amazon & replaced it with a childhood
favorite: Clash of the Titans.
I will still probably pick it up someday as I am just a fan of anthing Alien and the games both were good. I know it all means nothing ....
Troy my wife liked of course and I found it ok but weak but I didn't go into thinking I would like any of it. I have yet to see the other one but as for Dune the miniseries it rocks as I loved all the books as well. And come on...Sting did a good job for a pop idol.
