For those of you on DSL or other....what upstream/downstream speed are you getting, and what is recommended for online play (that is, is basic DSL at 384 kbps to 1.5 mbps sufficient, or do you need faster 1.5 mbps >)?

That's all I use, and I get virtually no lag... depending upon the servers I'm on though... that's really what it boils down to though. Guild Wars for instance is lag free for the most part, while some NWN servers can get a little slow at times... though having a premium service I don't think would help out in these cases... it's a server side problem, and not my connection, I believe.

It's a done deal. I'm getting it at the end of the month. Time to end the Pony Express days. I'm looking at getting basic DSL with SBC Yahoo for $27 a month, but I'll look at others too. I can get premium DSL for $37, which would actually be $17 if I chucked the second phone line that I don't need anymore. I just picked up UT 2004 today (25 bucks at EBX for the DVD version), and with the gigs' worth of downloads just for that one, the writing's on the wall.

That's weird, Steve. I remember when you and I kept going to bandwidthplace to see who had the faster connection that night...and you were always up in the 4.5mbps range. Did you downgrade recently?

I'd say you should go with the 1.5m connection, Aku...or if you don't wanna spend the big bucks then go for something in between. 384kbps is a little too slow nowadays.

No, I get about the 1.5 range- especially now that Rogers has switched over to the Yahoo backbone. I seem to remember you are the one with the premium connection. You could send me stuff in an hour or two, while I would take between 4 and 6 hours for me to send stuff to you...

That's because Rogers seriously limits the upload speed. You'll never upload at more than 50kbps.

Now download speed is a nice 1.5mbps at least, sometimes moreso.

Aku, for online gaming the latency (ping) is far more important than transfer speeds (for downloading large files the opposite is true). You can have a 2Mbps connection but still have poor latency, and while downloading movies will be fast your Unreal game will be laggy.

If you have a decent low-latency connection you should easily be able to find lots of UT2004 servers with a ping under 100, the transfer rate won't make a big difference.

I have no idea what the ping rate is on my connection. Guess I'll find out. :o

I went for the 1.5 meg myself and doing a few different tests seem get a reading of 1476kbs download and 345ish upload. Depending on which site you choose I get a variance in testing from 800kbs being the lowest download speed but in actual downloading I find it is all over the place. Just how the interent works and where my route is going but I have to say broadband is awesome. I find myself wanting more speed...must just be a guy thing. Never satisfied....

My ping from gamespy arcade is just under 100 and on the cod servers 110ish or so the other nite. Made for some fun time for me after dealing with pings from 400 on up with dialup. Made most online gaming a thing I avoided and I forgot how fun it can be.

Oh...upload speeds. I miss out on stuff when I just skim through a post really fast :P

Yeah, I used to have a damn good connection back in the day, 4.5 down 768k up. But about a year ago Charter cut down on their packages (and then claimed they never had that connection to begin with)...so now I probably upload about as fast as you do.

My cable has identicle speeds as yours. Though my local company is offering Premium services now... I dunno, but I know ping is important, but so is transfer speed... if it weren't, then a dial-up modem would suffice.

Jeremy, my upload speed is way faster than 50 Kps. Anyway, I already answered this type of question under the CS on dial-up thread (re: ping being most important).
