That cheat is from over 15 years ago and I didn't need a piece of paper, the internet, cheat book, or other tool to remember it. Its engrained in my brain permanently. How's that for the greatest cheat ever?
It was for Contra on the NES and gave you invincibility (if I remember correctly). Whatever it was it made Contra much more fun!!!! It was either invincibility, more lives, all weapons, something like that.
Another game with some fun cheats - GTA3 on the PS2. I used to have a blast punching in button combos for All weapons, extra cash, etc... The best was when you'd go on a mega rampage killing mass people including cops and then pausing to enter the No Heat cheat and then magically - you are free to go sir.

I agree, Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A B A Start is the greatest cheat ever. No other cheat is as legendary and known by so many gamers all over the world.
And it gives 30 lives, not invincibility.
Me, I have a Codebreaker so I can cheat on any PS2 game if I so desire. Ironically the reason I got a Codebreaker was to transfer saves from my memory card to my USB flashdrive. The cheating was just icing on the cake. ;)

The Konami code is probably the most renowned. They still use it to this day, but now they put twists on it by using the triggers and such.
A cookie to anyone who remembers this code:

What was the old Metroid code? Tyler Durden? Justin Bailey?

My vote goes to the blood code in the original Mortal Kombat...

Have you heard that song by the Moldy Peaches that mentions that cheat? There is also a band called Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A B A Start. They kinda sound like Modest Mouse.

Hands down the Konami code... I'd already spit it out before I read the other entries in the thread.
The second one I thought of was the blood code as well...
Funny... do we show our age with these selections?
Oh... and The Ataris have a song named afer the elements of the Konami code... classic.

LOL, yeah. Anybody from the 80's golden age era would select the Contra code for this topic.

On a lot of the old OXM discs, they had it so where you can input a secret code to unlock a hidden demo or video. I thought that was cool as hell, even if the codes were always the same basic formula. You hold down the R trigger, and then try pressing a button. If you pressed the right one, the controller will start vibrating. The more buttons you get right in order, the more the controller vibrates, eventually leading up to the final press that takes you to the demo or video automatically. Sometimes, doing the code was funner than playing the demo you unlocked it with.
