I was hoping to get into this one, truth is It's not really for me, it's not that it's difficult or anything although the manual and in-game help is awful, simply too much beard stroking type strategy and I just dont have the time to play this type of game anymore, I'm honestly going to make an effort to actually finish more games and I can see immediately this would'nt be one of them.
In brief you start up your new political party after a personality test to see how extreme or moderate you want to be and off you go on your power trip. The 3D layout looks much like the city in Mafia with a Eastern bloc feel, you dont actually see or control your character directly, it's all done in views although you appear in cut scenes. You have a rooftop cam where you can "fly" over the buildings and streets and zoom in on any person or object to see whats going on, you dont have much control of events in this view so theres a 2D map view, theres certainly freedom in the game but you have to follow a path of goals, "main quest" if you like (morrowind-ish) to achieve your ends. Interest in politics is an advantage, but after playing for only a couple of hours it felt too much like a management game to me, dare I say the Sims... there I've said it. Graphics are decent, moving trees etc, I could run this easily at 10x7 on 16 bit, but unlike a lot of games it looks amazingly better on 32 bit but I had to reduce to 8x6 and it was still a bit of a grind on the system, 1.2g 512ram rad900064mb bit strange as I've run stuff far superior graphically with no probs.
Moya, it's yours for £12 including postage if your'e interested e-mail me, if not I'll stick it on Ebay. :)
Yeah, I've heard mixed reviews. Many of them concentrate on the fact that the 3D view is underused and you could basically play the whole game in 2D map mode. I'd still like to try it out though (could be a case of Black and White deja vu?) so I've sent you a mail about it.

Hmm, well, what type of strategy game do you want if you don't want a "beard-stroking" (LOL) game then? The beard-stroking ones are the only type worth playing, are they not? I have a review of Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic just waiting to be posted, but I tell you... it's very cool! A nice blend of Beard-sroking ( :D BHAHAHA), and action gaming.
Personally my all time favourite Strategy games would have to be Combat Mission, Space Empires IV, and Age of Wonders II: SM. Runners-up would be Europa Universalis, Startopia, and Jagged Alliance 2... I'm certain I have more strat games than this, but I can't seem to remember them right this instant 8)!

SBS, you'd probably like it, nothing wrong with beard stroking strategy more of a case that I could see it as another one that remains on my hard drive unfinished, I could tell just by the feel of it. I still like a bit of strategy but RTS is probably more my cup 'o tea bit more fast moving, which is my other point I dont really have the time to play epic long running strategies anymore. :D

Well, either do I! There's alot of the above games I've mentioned that I have never "finished", but I do enjoy them for the play time they offer me none-the-less. Aow:SM, Space Empires IV, and Combat Mission though ARE games where I have at least played a bit of the pre-made scenarios... and a WHOLE load of quick battles. Europa Universalis is another that I have fallen into the trap of... and guess what? That is ACTUALLY a RTS game... however, you can set the pace at which all the action moves, and a feature which all RTS games should emulate... adjustable timing.

Yeah, I agree with that, there's enjoyment to be had without finishing them all, Shogun was a good one for me although I did finish 2 campaigns but even if you dont finish the game you can win individual battles which last about 20-30 mins depending on your strategy, so you are making satisfying progress each time you play. You mentioned a game in another thread which I'd completely forgotten about- Steel Beasts, thats a great RTS (although yes, it does look like ****) if you have time constraints, theres no campaign just a load of scenarios, take the village, escort the convoy, etc and each timed at 45mins- I hour or so and you dont have to complete them in any particular order.
I really have to get out of the habit of buying games just to "take a look" at what they're like and not actually getting started on them in earnest once I've got them installed, such a feckin' waste of time. :D

You should just get the demos, and just play them every which way you possibly can... that way the anticipation factor is higher, and when you do get it, it may give you more incentive to play the game for a little longer! :)
About SB... great game, but damn can it get technical! :( :D

There was no demo, for this game.
Maybe there is one now.
Beard stroking indeed.
I "almost" finished Republic, after over 30 hrs.gameplay.
I wrote a review about it here.
There simply was no fun completing the "requirements".
I stuck with it because the subject was fascinating, and close to my very early subjects in college way back.

RTS games have long been a favorite of mine, can you suggest any I may have missed out on? I enjoy micro manage/resource gathering, unnecessary complicated unit control type RTS. The more chaos the better.
RTS Ive played:C&C RA series, Generals, Empire Earth, Age of Conquest, Commansdos 2, Jagged Alliance, Freespace, Panzer Claws,
Battle Realms, Dune, Warlords B/C, Shogun, Sacrifice[yet to start] and some cross over genres like Hostile Waters, BattleZone2 and a few TBS like Disciples2, CM:BO & BB, Civ 3.
What about: Black & White, Blitzkrieg ?
Re: game speed slider, I have played three RTS that are adjustable; Emperor:Battle for Dune, Battle Realms, Winter of the Wolf.
Adjustable game speed can be like a cheat for RTS games, obviously allowing additional time to react. Having the option to adjust game speed to max provides new challenge to old replayed favorites. All RTS games need this feature incorporated.

As innovative as B&W is, it's so tediously time consuming that i totally lost interest in about a week. I don't know anyone who's actually finished the game. I had to result to leaving my computer on while i slept so my creature could "grow" for 8 hours a day.
I was interested in Blitzkrieg too, but i guess the game is just "okay". From what i've read, the game moves at an annoyingly slow pace, and there is a HUGE micromanagement emphasis.... But i guess it was made this way because the European customers enjoy the "realism" from having to fuel every vehicle and reload ammo every few minutes of the game. that's just my 2 cents though, you might enjoy it, i'm personally going to pick it up when the price drops.

BW scene:
Insufferable Kung-Fu Master says,in a deep smarmy voice:
-"I saw you following me".
:)
-"Please go hide behind mushrooms and try again, and again and again."..........
Another gem,
Game message:
-Your Animal has finally learned to throw dung at the peasants!
:)
