We've all heard of some of the bigger more anticipated games like the new 2D Mario, Advance Wars, Final Fantasy 3, a new Mana game, Mario Kart, Ridege Racer, Xenosaga, Animal Crossing, Viewtiful Joe, Yoshi Touch and Go, Golden Eye, Metroid Hunters, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, etc.
I personally have no interest in playing action/adventure or racing games on the DS or the PsP--looking at the PsP line-up, it looks like the system of choice for that sort of thing anyway. Here are a some games I'm looking forward to, many of them are overtly kinda lame to most gamers, but I'm going to list them none the less. My biggest interest for the DS lies in Strategy and RPG, but here goes with the lame/cool stuff you may or may not have heard of yet:
Of the things announced so far, I'm looking forward to Shin Megami Tensei from Atlus. If you are interested in RPG's read about the Ps2 version of the latest game in this series. . .I was going to pick it up until the DS version was annouced: http://ps2.ign.com/objects/489/489314.html
Nanostray--this one is a top-down scrolling shooter from the people that made Iridion. I've seen the screenshots, looks like a mix of 2-d and 3-d graphics, very sweet. I doubt there's much use for touch screen, but the 2-screen is perfect, because it creates the long verticle screen that is needed for a proper shooter.
Zoo Keeper--This is a puzzle game coming out december 28, that has been getting good previews. I can't really explain it well, so check out the reviews of puzzle gaming on handhelds is something you like.
Harvest Moon DS--how lame is a farming game? I know. I had no interest in the GBA version of this, but if the touch interface streamlines this game the way I anticipate, I can't wait to get it. If the interface isn't used properly, then I won't.
One Line Puzzle. This one is from Nintendo, looks extremely plain, all black and white, I'm guessing it will be a pretty ingenius and clever puzzle game. Heres a bit of the description from ign: One-Line Puzzle is a simple, stylish puzzle game designed to be played entirely with the Nintendo DS touch screen and a stylus. Use the stylus to draw a stroke, flipping black and white tiles to change and match their color. Three game modes and scores of puzzles will put your puzzle-solving abilities and stylus skills to the test.
Jam With the Band--Nintendo makes this one, it is a, rhythm, music game, and it has voice recognition and allows original music composition; (one way it does this is by translating your voice into notes.) In some ways it sounds like your standard "simon says" rhythm/music game format, but there's a lot more to it, and I like the simple composition aspects of it. I'm mostly curious if I can use this to capture simple melodies and hooks while I'm driving around, which seems to be where I write a lot of songs.
Another shooter has caught my attention, Cerulean Dreams-- Here's the description from IGN: A top-down flight shooter which combines the fast-paced action of traditional shooters with an immersive storyline, and RPG elements. Players interact with other pilots and gain experience, levels, and new special attacks. Other ships and pilots have an integral part of the story, and fly missions alongside the player.
Puppy Times, formerly known as Nintendogs OK, I know. It's a pet simulator/virtual pet. I don't know that I actually want to get this. I already have a dog to pet, train, and yell at. I'm mostly interested in this one from a technological standpoint, how well it uses touch screen and voice recognition, what the AI is like. The screenshots look really cool, graphically speaking. Not really a game, but something really cool for kids. This is the kind of bizarre thing I'd buy just to see how you can mess with it, if you can torture your pet, if you can get all BF Skinner on the critter (I don't torture my real dog, of course, ok!)
Another This one is also by Nintendo, it appears to be some sort of story-adventure in the mode of something like Myst. I could be completely missing the point, but its a Nintendo original with a totally different genre for them, as well as a completely non-nintendo graphical style. I don't know much yet, the screens are interesting, and I wonder what the hell Nintendo is making here.
The Non-video gamers games series Ultimate Brain Games and Ultimate Card Games These are both due out in May from Telegames. Brain games include: Chess, Checkers, Backgammon, Mahjong (solitaire and multi-player varieties), Sink the Ships, Four in a Row, Dominoes, Reversi, Go and Minesweeper. . I KNOW, most of thes are games you play with people, but I want to brush up on my Chess, and the DS interface is the perfect place for this game. And how often can you find someone who you can play the ancient and complex game "Go" with? I'm skeptical about that one though, I'd heard you couldn't really program a computer to play this game.
The Ultimate Card Games here's IGN's description: The game features vastly upgraded graphics to make use of the 3D potential of the Nintendo DS (including a 3D "Person Creator" for designing your own avatar and full 3D environments of play), and includes playable versions of the following: Solitaire (with additional Solitaire variations/rule options not seen on GBA), Video Poker (also with multiple variations), Hearts, Spades, Euchre, Cribbage, Canasta, Bridge, Go Fish!, Crazy 8's, Blackjack, Draw Poker, Texas Hold'em Poker, Pinochle and Gin Rummy.
Again, the card games are things I play with people, but I want to learn Bridge and Canasta, and this seems like a good way to do it. I also play Texas Hold 'em. I've been doing pretty good, but the guys that I'm playing against are studying the game and getting better. If this one is a good simulation of actual Texas Hold'em it could be a lot of fun and useful at improving my games, or at least perceiving the odds.
What would make all of these "lame" games I'm looking forward to completely awesome is if the Warp Pipe project makes these all playable at via wireless hotspots, like at Coffee Houses, or soon, my place of work.
I wonder if this is the perfect post for killing any interest in the DS.
