View Full Version : Squad based FF Demo
Got DSL? Heres the demo for Freedom Fighters:
ftp://largedownloads.ea.com/pub/demos/freedom_fighters.exe
RSVP with mini review if you dowload this single mission demo.
[Im shamefully on "slow-mo" connection].
From makers of Hitman2, 3rd person squad based action.
Looks like PC version will be first out.

The game's been getting rave reviews from Gamespot and the likes so I decided to try the demo out. And man did I have serious technical issues. Granted I'm still using a 16mb Geforce 2 MX, after fiddling around with drivers and crap I managed to get the game running with sharp graphics. But, dude, the game's framerate is just so bad! Everything runs at hyperspeed! I really need to tone the speed down a bit so I can enjoy it, cuz it really does look like fun.

Did you mean 64mb G2? [didnt know there was a 16mb G2].
My system is up for anything [thankful]. Do you know the HD space required for max install?
I was hoping FF would be a "fun" squad shooter.
I heard that the orders available for issue were minimal...like "go here" , "stay there"...not too sophisticated?

No I meant 16. Ok I'll be truthful and say that I run all my games on my 16 Mb Geforce 2 Go card... which is on my ... ummm... errr... laptop. There! I said it! I play my games on my laptop! The humiliation.
Onto other points... I have no idea what the HD requirement is, but I'd be ready to give this one a try. Yeah the orders are pretty simple but they work well too. It's a lot of fun to see your squad react to dangers around them. It's more focused on fun rather than tedious realism; my cup of tea.

Well hell! As I live & breath, someone else dare speak my sentiment about gaming: "...focused on fun..." ;)
Its refreshing [if only for the moment] to leave the analytical posturing on what makes a good game behind, & simply enjoy the game.
Not to dis FF's limited squad orders, I think more options for AI to follow would have made the game a little more exciting, realism aside. Same goes for 'Cong, which may have more commands [than FF] available for team, but were still limited as a squad based game.
Im gonna keep a look out for FF @ GoGamers 48 hour madness sale. It should show up in the next month or two for $29.
This demo's on the coverdisc of a PC mag I just bought. The blurb about it mentions the phrase "arcade blaster" which doesn't exactly fill me with gushing torrents of enthusiasm, but hey... I'll probably give it a blast after I've finished with the Chrome and Jedi Academy demos.

Got Chrome demo? How is it?? [you must have DSL].
Bag that request moya, I just read your response under "General Discussion". Sound like another good game to me [lover of all things Deus Ex].
Nope, no DSL here. I waited till it came along on the coverdisc of a PC mag I get every month. As for Chrome being like Deus Ex, you should realise that's in feel only. The augs and inventory layout remind me a lot of Deus Ex, but the actual gameplay is not similar.

My friend brought the full game today and according to him its an awful, awful game he says it has major bugs and camera problems, I can't say for myself since I haven't seen it working fully yet, but I did see a little bit on his computer and the performance wasn't good at all since he is using a rad9700pro and high end system!

Sounds like the initial response to G.I. Combat :( . However, Im still optimistic thats its worth salvage via patch...time will tell.

Not all is lost, i've borrowed the game from him and i've been playing it alot now and I have to say its not a bad game at all, I didn't run into any serious problems except for a few minor gameplay issues such as soviet hummors than constantly respawn enemy troops and you can't destroy the hummor.
The game works perfectly on my system with only a couple of minor graphical issues so far i'm enjoying the game. More soon, maybe some pics

This is a great game, just one minor problem with it and that it a little too short again, I completed it within a day. Definately worth a look guys!

Glad to hear an improved opinion of Freedom Force, Friend_Bear.
Just one thing, you say "I completed it in one day". Its either incredibly short or you were at the keyboard for many hours straight???

There isn't that many missions, only about 5 in all, each mission has a small sub set of missions that can be tackled in any order, but its best to destroy soviet barracks and heli-pads since it greatly reduces the enemy attacks in the main objective missions. I completed the game within about 5 hours or so on Easy difficulty, which I really should have put it on medium or hard as there was way to many health packs, ammo is a constant problem though :p

I had to play the demo around 4 times to pass it. Maybe it was set a higher difficulty or something. Oh and there is no save game support in the demo either (doh!). It definitely was fun and I'm eager to play the full game. It's nice to see the ragdoll effects in action again...
5 hours??!!!!!! Is it me or is that just way too little game for the buck ?

I think most of the people complaining about the game being short must have played it on the "toddler" setting. Try it on one of the two harder settings - much more of a challenge.

Now,....now wait a minute [Im still laughing..]...too funny, ok:
RE: "toddler" setting [still laughing :D ], for real you must not be.
At the moment, reviews from around the world are mixed.
Im gonna hold out for the best on Freedom Force.
I think that gamers that "blow" through a new game miss out on some content in the simple pursuit of "hopw fast can it be done".
However, any game that has a "toddler" setting is out! :p

I agree about guys racing each other too prove they can whizz through a game, then *****ing because it wasn't long enough. Get a life. Enjoy the game.
I played it on the X-Box on the third difficulty setting. I thought the game play was absorbing and exciting. The graphics were excellent - smooth as cat **** on linoleum. The game felt big - all of these games have to be linear to a degree but this game feels a lot freer than most and you CAN do most of the levels in several different ways. The command system was great - enough to feel like you were controlling these people without getting bogged down in an anal, laborious planning set-up. The gun and explosion sound effects are top-notch, the music is cool (sort of like the Saint) and the voice acting is excellent. The cut scenes were also good, with some sly humour - like when the main guy's brother admits on a Russian news broadcast that he and his brother were led astray, "by staying up late at night playing video games... violent ones." I watched that at 11pm and cacked myself laughing.
My only ***** is this would have been great on linked co-operative play. But hey, whatever. It's an excellent game.
cheers
