Today at Reuters, I read that Nintendo reported the first week sales of the DS to be 500,000 units, and they are standing firm on their prediction that one million of them will sell by years end. They said that with the Japanese launch in another week or so, they expect to sell out completely in many markets. Also, during the same period, they sold 800,000 GBAs, probably, IMO, due to the recent price cuts.

From the perspective of the Nintendo board room, what difference does it make if they are 3rd place in full size console sales if they can sell more than a million handheld units in a week? Given a sales price of $79 for the GBA, the only way Sony or Microsoft could keep up with their full size console sales (I'm talking dollars here, not capability) would be to sell half a million units a week, using the formula of 2GBAs=1XBox or 1PS2.
