First of all, Thanksgiving is over and i'm none to happy about that. Here is looking towards XMAS.
After finishing Halo2 in 6 days on Heroic mode, I tried to play Legendary mode, using the same tactics I used previously, I couldn't even make it off the first mission. I tried and tried and just gave up! It made me wonder, why the hell did Bungie make a mode that no one could play? And that ? stayed in my mind for the longest. So finally got the chance to play co-op with another skilled Halo2 player. And the results were exactly the same, we got smashed. Mind you we only had an hour here or an hour there, with all the interruptions such as kids, thanksgiving dinner, shopping, and all the other distractions preventing us from killing aliens. Anyway, we could not get past the first mission. And I thought, for a minute, Bungie just screwed the pooch on Legendary mode.
Enter The Plasma Pistol.
I said before in another post, there is a purpose for each gun/weapon in Halo2. When I said that, I really wasn't including the plasma pistol. Which, I believed Bungie included just because it was in the first. That being my belief, I never used the plasma pistol in the game. Then, after talking with my boy about why we kept getting crushed, it dawned on me. The on thing we never tried to use, the Plasma Pistol.
The Problem.
The second boarding party on the first mission. There are basically 3 waves of boarders, the first two waves are very difficult, but doable. The last wave, they drop in an Elite with a sword, 2 double plasma elites, and a few normal Elites, plus any enemies you didn't kill from the previous waves. Add in the fact, you have little to no grenades left, limited ammo, and weak shields. Basically you are fighting a gang of super bad Elites, and the double plasma rifle Elites will drop you in 2 seconds.
Leave it to Bungie to make one of the toughest scenarios in the game, solvable with the weakest weapon in the game. The solution was so simple, so old school Halo 1, I just felt dumb. The formidable Elite shields, drop completely with 1 charged plasma blast, after that a follow up burst from a battle rifle or SMG will drop 'em dead. In short, the Elites are wimps without those shields.
Legendary Mode Cracked.
After getting home, I thought i'd try out the strategy on Legendary mode single player. Doing it with 2 people is realy easy, one person just fires plasma charges indiscriminately, and the second person drops Elites like flies with the battle rifle. The whole thing is over in a matter of minutes. But, doing it alone, is a different animal. I tried it, and it works. It just takes longer, because your AI still dies fast, and there is no second person to draw fire. But, it still isn't very hard. I did it after about 6 tries, and finished the rest of mission one with no problems. The very end is difficult, because there are about 4 or 5 Elites guarding the bomb, but they were chumps compared to that 2nd boarding party.
Legendary mode is a blast, it just forces you to become an efficient killing machine. And you fight way more enemies, than even heroic.
