I don't have concern for screen scratch for the top screen since the DS closes (if you get a PsP, defintely buy a screen protector for it to.)
But the touch screen on the DS, buy a screen protector for sure if you are doing any heavy rubbing games (just playing card games and other light touch mini-games scratching is no issue.). I picked up a set from a company called Pelican. I went ahead and put the top screen protector on too, since it was a set of two. It didn't affect the visual brightness that I could tell.
The bottom screen protector cuts the brightness a little, and makes it a little less sensitive, but the bottom screen will scratch from the stylus. I noticed a few tiny scuff marks on mine from some of the more vigorous rubbing games on Feel the Magik. You can't see them when the game is on--only if the background is black and you hold it at an angle in the light. It may be a non issue for some gamers, but I'm kind of a perfectionist about screens.
Also, using a q-tip instead of a stylus on Feel the Magic was also really effective, and put an end to scuff marks until I was able to pick up screen protection. Pelican really sticks it to you. . .the screen protectors were $10 for a couple pieces of plstic film. It did come with a micro fiber cleaning cloth which is GREAT for cleaning your screens and really making them shine.
