Which game are you "the man" at?
The shiz-nit, the boss, the creme de la creme, the king of the hill, the champion of the world... what videogame are you the best (... evar!!!) at?

For me, it's Burgertime.
Although I gained my reputation on the Intellivision, I was actually better on the arcade verison. "The best Burgertime player to hit Amercia since 1492" - that's me!

Shhk-shhk... how do you like that PEPPER in your face, Mr. Pickle?!? Haw!
Come on up, Mr. Hot Dog and Mr. Egg... I've got somethin' for ya!
Hah-hahh!

(Boy... that was a long time ago though.)

One of the ones that I rule at is TEKKEN TAG. I lose about once every forty or so times that I play against someone. People stop playing against me, I kick their asses so bad!!

Another that I'm good at is Frequency. I gots skills, yo! I'm a contenda! I'll rock the party till the mutha fuggin' roof, caves in!!

Eventually, I'll become a master of IKARUGA, but that'll still be a while. I was content to just listen to the music test, but today my data got corruptedhttp://69.57.141.218/212/170/emo/icon_banghead.gif, so I might as well try my best to get all the bonus stuff before they give it to me from playing so many hours!

Mine's gotta be H.E.R.O. Old old old ass game, but man it was fun as hell.

A friend of mine used to own it for the Atari 5200 (I think), and everytime I went over there I'd play a few rounds of it to see how far I could get...I think I was the only one that could get past level 20 without losing a life.

It was also one of the first games that impressed me with its graphics. Back in the day I thought that the water was the coolest effect I had ever seen in any videogame and the fact that it changed from a clear blue to a murky brown depending on which level you were on really blew my mind. I was easily impressed back then though...I mean comeon, I was like 8.

Dang...can I only mention <i>one</i> game ? This is tough !!! Well...you are <i>the man</i> at <i>Burger Time</i>...a truly <i>challenging</i> game...at first glance a wholesome cutesy-pie type of game...but from personal experience level 3 was <i>hell</i> (still had to learn to use that cutesy-pie pepper shaker in an economical manner...IMHO no use in attempting this level with only zero of these at hand). But enough talk about <i>Burger Time</i>...how about <i>millipede</i> or <i>centipede</i> (with that akward left-sided trackball) ? Ever <i>dared</i> tackle these at your local arcade ?

I remember being scared shiatless in my early teens attempting to even drop a quarter into these monsters only <i>masters</i> dared touch (these guys always drew the proverbial crowd)...well must say...after many, many <i>embarassing</i> moments <i>in public</i> trying to master these ...one day I surprised myself by pulling off something I had never seen before...running up the score by staying <i>stuck "eternally"</i> in the level where those nasty <i>flies</i> keep zig-zagging across the screen towards you in numbers that can only described as insane...and everyone tought this level was <i>finite</i> (LOL!)

P.S. Let's not mention the other "stunts"...yet !!!

The game I ruled at was Columns for Genesis. One night I had something like 3 and a half million points or some insanely high amount and couldn't lose. Everything was falling in place for me I was "In the groove". I was getting tired of playing but didn't want to give up. Finally I just shut the console off. It was really amazing.

Wow... a lot of old-school responses... Centipede (I sucked at), HERO (I never heard of), and Columns (I never played). Only Peanut Juice has responded, so far, with this-gen boasts - and I'll bet he's a young whipper-snapper in comparison to the rest of us.

Whassawihdat, old-schoolers?!? Has our skills... faded?

At the risk of sounding like Will Smith's Agent J in M.I.B. II... I would have to admit that yes, my skills have faded a bit. Though I still say I could kick anybody's azz in Burgertime! But with today's games it's a different story. Halo (my favorite game of all-time), unfortunately, illustrates this best. Though I'm pretty much the champion of all my close friends, when our party's expand to include 12-14 year olds sons (and friends of) it's a totally different story - and actually, it's not even close! It's frustrating, it's humiliating, it's ugly... and it's not much fun.

Now with XBL I've been able to compete, for the first time, with players from all over the globe. And with online rankings, being Number One in a particular game is no longer just a myth. But unfortunately, in the games that I've competed in (Wolfenstein, MotoGP2, Midtwon Madness 3, MechAssualt, Unreal Championship) I get put in my place early and often here too. Being Number One in these games, for me, isn't even a pipe dream.

Damn, I really can't think of a single XB, PS2, GC game that I rule over. In fact the most recent game that I can make any boasts about is NFL Blitz for the N64 - I own my niece! What happened to me... to us?!?

Kung Fu Chaos comes to mind. I can get 5 stars first try on all levels.

Emperor:Battle for Dune..cause I love the game so much I would use it for "fill in" between games, till something new came out.
I played the campaign a dozen times on hardest dif, & dominated the skirmish maps w/results that averaged 85%-90% success.
[its simply the result of repitition ;) ]

Neither humans nor the computer can touch me in NCAA Football, ever since the '99 version with Charles Woodson on the cover.

I dominate my "inner circle" of friends and family at almost every game. However, two games I seriously own at are

Double Dribble

and

Mario Kart (64 and snes versions)

I wouldn't call going from playing games on consoles to playing them on a computer an upgrade, it's more of a downgrade, considering the lack of variety PC games have to offer.

I'm probably pretty mediocre at them all. . . never really willing to put in the time to become king of any one game.

I guess I'd have to say Galaga, though. That's one I could always play longer than my interest would last and hand the game off with 4 or 5 spare ships to some grateful kid who would then immediately die. Also good at mrs. pacman.

Someone mentioned their skills at centipede. . . I never could get that one; hitting a 1/4million points was a big deal to me. And the one that I could NEVER dominate even though I loved it was Missile Command.

Glockstar mentions that with xbox live you learn really quick you aren't the best in the world. But that's probably a good challenge though; while I seriously suspect I'm pretty lousy, I do tend to outplay most people I know, and I don't have too difficult a time with the so called "hard games" like F-Zero and Ikaruga (Well, I can't beat Ikaruga, but I do fine for the first three stages anyway.)

Good topic, Glock.

LOL I'm playing more games now on my PC than I EVER did on any consoles I owned. Hell, I even sold my DC a few months after it was released in order to get a couple games for the PC I really wanted. Driving and fighting games, I don't really consider variety. The driving games are superior on PC's, and are way more "simmy", with realistic physics, while fighting games... eh, I'm too old to play those games with all their stretchy limbs, and fire-breathing attacks... hell, if I wanted that, I'd play a role-playing-game.

The only things I really use consoles for are platformers and adventure games... Too bad you won't be playing Chrome on YOUR console, eh! :p

Or Half-Life 2, Battlefield Command, Guild Wars, Savage, Gothic 2, or BF1942 for that matter! :D

Where's the variety? The only type of games I notice on PC are RPGS (I like these), MMORPG, and FPS. I know there are a few sports games on the PC, but who would want to play a sports game with a keyboard and mouse?

And about Chrome, never heard of it, and from the screenshot, it looks like another shooter, so I will not be missing anything. There are plenty of good shooters on consoles to play.

The largest variety of genres are to be found on PC:
[1] RTS
[2] TBS
[3] RPG
[4] Adventure
[5] FPS [incl Tactical Squad based]
[6] MMORPG
[7] Driving/Sports

Thats seven types I know of for PC.

Experience TBS games if you like to be challenged, try Combat Mission.
CM is a tactical WWll combat simulation that will challenge those who assume gaming prowess. ["gamey" tricks wont work on this one].

Within each genre is the ability to compound/expand game titles via the modding community. You get more game than whats on the CD. Take Half Life, when you've finished the SP, dowload heaps of new maps/new weapons/ new skins/wave files...the game never ends & much is new.
Then theres the multiplayer modding community......PC gaming is too good a gaming value to ignore. [not to mention initial entry cost of games are least expensive].

I wish I was a young whipper-snapper as you put it, but I'm a quarter of a century old. I guess that you might still consider that young...Anyways, I seem to excel more at next-gen games for some reason. Maybe it was all the years of playing quick-reflex games like Berzerk, Centipeed, Ms. Pacman(the fast version on the arcade) and all the cheap-shotting NES games that had you falling down into the abyss because of shotty controls. That might've played a role in my quickness of todays fighting games and such. I also give credit to the old-school shmups like Gradius, Thunder Force, Xevious, Life Force, and others.

But back to the topic. I was thinking about other games that I rule at. Mainly older games, and I came up with these:
I could beat all three Ninja Gaiden games on the NES without dying once.
I'm a master at Bubble Bobble. I could beat Double Dragon I and II without dying.

Beating the 3 Ninja Gaiden games without dying once is an achievement. I remember that I was always able to get up to the last few levels without dying, but then I'd start dropping lives like flies....specially in that last level before you fight Joquito in Ninja Gaiden 1.

Man, those were some fun games.

You know, I'm really surprised no ones mentioned Donkey Kong yet. I used to play it in the arcades along with Jungle Hunt all the time.

Man..I wonder if anyone even remembers Jungle Hunt. That game was cooler than 10 of em.

There were three games I was really good at back in the day. The first was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the NES. The second was Sonic 3 and Knuckles. These were two games but I always played them as one. And the third was Super Street Fighter 2: The New Challengers.

I was a beast in all three games. In TMNT and Sonic, I beat the games without dying once. This was really an accomplishment for TMNT since that game was long and hard. In SSF2, I dominated my inner group of friends easily.

I was sorta good at Mortal Kombat too but after SSF2, that series didn't get much time from me.

Son of a.... Ninja Turtles 1 is still a friggin' hard assed game. I don't think that I've made it to even half way in that fugger without turning it off out of frustration!! I salute you, Slade.

Has anyone ever beat Darkman on the NES?

And I also wanted to mention the other day I beat Contra on one life. And I finally beat Contra: Shattered Soldier without using a continue. Now that's an accomplishment,!!!!!!

Heh, don't I know it. It took me practically a year to beat that game the first time. I kept getting stuck in that one jump in the sewers. For the longest time I thought the game had a glitch but I kept coming back to it despite games like Super Mario Brothers enticing me away. One day, it just all fell into place and I cleared that jump. It only got harder after it though but I ended up beating it and then beating it quite a few times afterwards. Comparatively, TMNT 2 and 3 weren't nearly as hard although they had better graphics and moves for the turtles.

I was also pretty good at Double Dragons 2 and POW (Prisoners of War) although I remember very little about POW. It was a long long time ago and I don't think I beat it more then once.

NBA streets, my nick Mr Cheap.

SSX tricky, try scoring a 1,000,000 on all but a few levels.
