I got to play the DS at my local gamecrazy the other day. I was blown away. The screenshots for metroid hunters do it no justice at all. The touchpad works even better then I predicted, using it to aim aiming on hunters is a blast! I wasn't going to get a DS...but now Im probably going to. My friend is getting one, my sister is getting one. Imagine wireless multiplayer on metriod hunters right out of the box!
On a side note...
-The DS is much smaller then I thought it would be and
-The battery lasted about 7 - 7 and a half hours

"Blown away" describes my reaction too. As far as gaming, its all I feel like talking about. I'm going batty though because the games I want most for this system won't be out until next year. Warioware Touched is supposed to be out in February, but Advanced Wars and Animal Crossing, my two most wanted, don't have a release yet, and may well be holiday titles for 2005!!!!
A friend of mine at work is planning on getting one now, too, after playing mine, and my wife wants one when Animal Crossing comes out. I could see this system expanding the female gaming market.
I'll tell you one thing, I was the most popular adult at the big family thanksgiving dinner and the butt of endless teasing from my wife about how well I fit in with ten year olds! This system has been blowing away kids and adults alike.

Im not sure If im gonna buy one yet...it depends on the sucess of the RPG's coming out for it. Things are looking bright though..heres some...
Shin Megami Tensei -Atlus
Final Fantasy 3 - Square (Never released in america...should please square fanboys)
Seiken Densetsu -Square
Boktai - Konami
New RPG - Game Arts
New RPG - Namco
Original RPG -Marvelous
Square also has some other promising games coming out for the DS. Golden Sun and Fire Emblem aren't announced yet...but I can only assume they are gonna be awesome. Advance Wars DS will probably be the best handheld game ever. I can't even begin to imagine how much fun the wireless multiplayer will be...much less imagine what there gonna do with the two screens and touch pad!

How long does your battery last?
You know, I've never timed it, and I've never ran the battery out. I know it lasts more than four hours. . .I played three days without charging, and I did three lunch hours, and about 2 hours of breaks (I've been taking a lot more breaks since the DS came out, but still less than the smokers seem to take.) And my wife played it for at least an hour in the evening. . . so I'm guessing I got about 6, and the light was still green. I charged it anyway, because I didn't want it to die on me at work. I played about half of the time with no sound on, though.
I hope some great RPG's are made, and I hope Square's new Mana game is great, because I liked the original. I don't want to see a bunch of N64 ports, but I'd love to see Star Craft, but worked over with touch interface. I only ever played the PC version, but since Blizzard did an N64 version, it seems it wouldn't be that big a deal for them to make a DS version since it can handle N64 games. The DS interface, implemented correctly, could make Star Craft possibly more intuitive and fluid than the PC version.
I play guitar and type a lot, and the d-pad on handhelds makes my tendons ache more than anything. This new interface on the DS. . . I can play it for a long time with no fatigue or hand pain at all. That, combined with the originality, ease of use, and unexpectedly good graphics. . . if and when the software is there for it, the DS will probably end up being my system of choice for gaming. That's how much I like it. I can get my gaming fix out of the way in bits and pieces throughout a busy day, and I'd rather keep my evenings free for other stuff besides gaming anyway. Weekend mornings are the best time to get in a few hours of console gaming.
The DS is the coolest, most innovative gaming device I've ever had. . . which is making the wait for more software total torture. I'm glad the remake of Mario64 is fun and all, but I've never wanted games to hurry up and get here so badly in my life.

A couple of heads up, based on past experience with lithium ion batteries. This may not be the case today, but in the past charging up lithium ion batteries before they're fully depleted would cause the battery to not fully recharge.
For example, let's say, you constantly charge up a 4 hour battery after a couple of hours. What happens is that you find that when the battery is fully depleted and you charge it fully, the battery life has been shortened. Instead of registering the full four hours it's a lot less due to the constant recharging of a battery with a charge still left in it.
So with lithium ion batteries, I tend to let them deplete fully or if they're close to fully dishcarged. Batteries are tempermental, you're not talking solid state electronics here, that's why manufacturerers only give you estimates when it comes to battery life.

Actually that is Nickel Cadmium batteries that build up memories like that. Both Nickle metal hydride and lithium ion batteries don't suffer from this issue. I have heard though that Li-Ion should be charged fully, when you first get them, before using them as it will decrease the maximum charge capacity.
I just looked it up and it appears that fully discharging li-ion is actually a good way to decrease there life here is a link.

Well, I stand corrected, then. The lithium ion battery on my old dvd portable unit is shot. My camcorder battery seems to be fairing better. They're finicky to say the least. It could also very well be a case of improvements in lithium ion batteries.

I've always wondered what machine to keep if I had to choose only one. I have a PS2 and a 'Cube, plus a couple of Gameboys. I had an Xbox but I ebay'd it after buying a half dozen games that were long on hype and short on quality (Morrowind, gak...) plus I'm not a sports gamer, and the Xbox seems most suited to that market.
As much as I like my GBAs, the games lack the depth of full console games, and that is to be expected given the hardware limitations. But the DS is an entirely different beast. I think that once the system has matured and has a good game selection, I will probably slow down on my purchases of full sized console games. And, if the networked wireless portable gaming idea does take off (and I'll be one of the first to try it) then the DS could truly make some serious waves in the gaming and entertainment world.
I have issues with the gaming press's assumption that you need lots of bandwidth for networked gaming. I played several games regulary for a couple of years on the Dreamcast at 56k just fine, and I played PC games in the mid 90s at 28k too. So, the DS has some very cool possibilities.
BTW, your Q-tip idea for the touch screen is fantastic. It works great.

That is just too bizarre. Those are almost all my sentiments exactly. If the DS does what it should and the software is there, its where I'm shifting my game priorities and dollars.
I feel the same way about xbox, too, mostly, but I have hung onto it because there's still a few things I want to play (I'm hoping Psychonauts and Oddworld: Stranger don't turn out to be underwhelming.)
I don't want to see a lot of N64 ports, but I think Ogre Battle 64 might make a good one. I bought it, but have never played it because my N64 is boxed up and I'm too lazy to get it out when I've already got three other consoles hooked up. But I looked at the manual, and it looks like a very good, deep game perfectly suited to the DS's features and interface. I bet even Glockstar would buy a DS then!

Mmmmmm... maybe.
If it was a new Ogre Battle game then definitely. Oh yeah! Heck, I'd by the N-Gage if it got the next one! I'd buy that Gizmondo - whatever the heck it is. I'd even buy the Phantom!
OB64 remake? That'd be cool. But, I persoanlly wouldn't call it a system seller. Heck, I played thru the game 4 times already. And if I wanted to fire it up again, all I got to do is remove the dust cover, put in the cartridge, and flick a switch; my N64 is still hooked up.
It would make a good DS game tho', no doubt. RTS's, such as OB64, are best suited for the PC, but that's mostly because of all the pointing and clicking that's necessary for directing your troops. Pointing and clicking which is best accomplished with a mouse. But a touch-pad? Actually, I think that'd be the best control interface yet.
You know, now that you got me sitting here thinking of how two-screens could have made OB64 better, I'm actually getting a bunch of great ideas for DS play. Dang. Okay, I haven't worked out the details on some of my ideas yet, but already I can tell... there's a proclamation that I must make!:
The DS could well become the system for RTSs! In fact, I'll go ahead and say it, the PCs days of laying claim to owning this genre are about over!
See, here's an idea: We do one view of the map - say a closer-up view - on the top screen, and a broader-view (with menus, and battle-screens, zoom in, rotate, etc. all just a tap away) on the bottom screen.
Heck, there's no reason to believe that you couldn't viddy two seperate battles (or any event for that matter) that are going on at the same time - at the same time. I don't see why not. I don't know, maybe it's a question of processing power. But I kinda doubt that. I think it's more of a question of, 'will the developers think of this stuff?'
Here's hoping they do.
Aw look at you, you bastich Gadfly. You got me hoping for things for the DS now!
(Oh, and here's also hoping that you find some time (and some energy) for Ogre Battle 64. Before it's too late.)

Hey all.
I remember when we were Ooh and Ahhing the Game Boy Advance with it's SOOOOOOOO much better than Game Boy Color graphics (God they were terrible weren't they?) And what the GBC released in 1998? Just six years later Nintendo has brought us the DS, everything we wanted, better than the Game Gear and the Nomad put together. Just in a few years Nintendo will bring us a Gamecube based portable system!
This thing had me playing for hours, as I love Super Mario 64 (and is the only title Nintendo has released so far.....All the other games are third party titles and I"m not a fan of them because they are mostly bad.)
The graphics in this game are VERY lovely. I bought my DS about two weeks after it released. I originally put it on layaway (I work at Wal-Mart and get a discount) but couldn';t stand it I just had to have it. Then I had 22.00 in Gamestop store credit so I went across the street and bought a copy of Super Mario 64 DS. It is so awesome and the pictochat is awesome but I wish I could chat with more people (I had a guy at work that bought one also and I was messing around with Pictochat at EB Games lol) as not very many people own a DS yet.
All in all this is an awesome system and I hope they release DKC3 for it (Or DKL, DKL2, and DKL3 all in one game pak with IMPROVED graphics lol that would be my dream game.) I can't wait for other games to come out like Mario Kart DS, Zelda DS, Donkey Kong DS?, LOTS of possibilites and I want to know how they made cartridges smaller than the GBA;s lol.

DKC3 is actually GBA bound, Rare is actually finishing it up right now. I still find it odd that Rare still owns the rights to DK and that they are putting conker playing a GBA SP (where he was playing the original gameboy in the N64 version) on the XBOX version, but yet MS isn't letting Rare do any DS titles.

IT's hilarious that MS spent nearly 1/2 BILLION dollars on Rare, and they've released more games for Nintendo over the last 3 years than they have for MS. That must sting the pride a little, as well as the pocket book, and probably accounts for why they are being pissy about letting Rare do things for the DS. No big loss, if you ask me. Rare makes pretty graphics, but I don't think they demonstrate the innovation anymore to really bring much of anything to the DS.

I know, the possibilities boggle the mind. All it would take, I think, is one or too serious RTS games to come out, and for word to get out, and the adult gaming world would sit up and take notice.
You'd think I'm a RTS junky or something. I'm not really. I really liked Starcraft, and Pikmin is in its own weird way SORT of an RTS. But I like a LOT of types of games, but I've fizzled out on PC gaming, even though I recently bought a new graphics card (I'm a retard for buying crap I don't need.) But I work on a PC all day, and at home, a little posting at forums, a little reading of the news, and I'm off. I don't want to sit in front of a PC anymore. That could change if I got back into a line of work where I don't use a PC at all. Anyway, the DS has made me froth at the mouth for a RTS game because I know how well it would work. Like you're saying, and I've been saying, the top screen with the animations, the bottom with maps and menus, you could have battles going on all over the place, and you could just point to the troop icon on the battle map and the top screen overhead camera would relocate to that area. There a TON of ways it could be done, not to mention if Blizzard got involved, I wonder if they could work it into Battle.net.
I'm going to go on a shooting spree if the only people that buy the DS are Third Party haters who only want ports of N64 Donkey Kong, Mario Kart and Zelda games. We all love a good Zelda game--I love Mario Kart too-- but for the love of god people, LET NINTENDO OUT OF YOUR STRANGLE HOLD AND LET THEM DO SOMETHING ELSE. And I"m talking to you 4STARCAHSIER, if you've bothered to read this far into a post not about Donkey Kong. And if you've got to shill for Nintendo first party games, at least talk about buying Animal Crossing, or Advance Wars. Do you have a gamecube? Did you get Pikmin? This mentality in fans is KILLING NINTENDO, pigeon holing them, and driving away third party support. ARGGGGGGHHH!!!!!!! Don't you remember how much better Nintendo was (SNES) when there were great third party games AND first party games?

My impressions of the DS?
Oh, that's simple.
It's an entirely new machine and an entirely different gaming experience. It makes me wanna play games I've never wanted to play before! Every imaginable game that I ever ignored now sounds good whenever I think about playing it on my DS. All of my friends have a DS, so by January next year, I'm gonna be bringing my DS wherever I go. I already knife out 3 hours of my day to this beast.
It's an experience I want Nintendo to take advantage of, and I'm almost certain they will.

You're lucky. I've got a couple friend at work that are thinking of getting one, but they are interns, in college, with tight budgets. Neither have any interest in PsP after seeing how DS handles First Person Shooters like lightening. I'd love to have some wireless competition. My wife will probably want a DS when Animal Crossing comes out, though, but that's just not the same as a good death match with a bunch of guys.
Never, in all my years of gaming, has a system made my head spin with all the cool things that can be done on it. The main reason the PsP doesn't interest me is I've already got killer graphics and traditional style games on xbox. Handheld gaming should be a different kind of experience, and the DS is. ANY gamer who's gamed a lot should be looking for something new and different, and any gamer with a creative thought in his head should be able to spend a few minues with the DS and just start dreaming of all the things the DS could do for games, both new and old. And regarding graphics, despite the PsP's advantage there, the DS does have really killer graphics.
I want, and see, new games on the way, but even just the sequels alone. . . most of the time a sequel is like "oh well." But with the DS, you are talking about revolutionizing the gameplay of Advance Wars and Fire Emblem for sure, two of the best handheld games ever. ANY RPG will play so much smoother, NO LONGER having to inefficiently scroll through complex menus but instead navigating them with touch screens is the best gift any gamer could ask for. Maps? That's a no brainer. So yeah, I'm looking forward to square's new Mana game, and to their release of Final Fantasy III. And even Wario Ware DS looks killer
Yoshi's touch-and-go which look to provide very original experiences. a Platformer where YOU draw the platforms? We'll see how it works, but it looks like an original new game from nintendo (though some sourgrapes haters will say its not new because it stars an existing nintendo character.)
I've tended to like games by Atlus: Does anyone know anything about the DS games they've announced so far: Caduceus, ChoroQ DS, or Shin Megami Tensei? The only one I'm familiar with is Shin Megami Tensei, or sort of demonic RPG.
I'm also, believe it or not, hoping for a really good chess game, with good AI. Chess on a console or handheld exists, but currently have useless tedious interfaces. Chess on DS will play like a breeze, just touch the piece, and touch where you want to place it. I prefer to play chess with a real person, but the thing is, my grandpa is a chess shark (he's got a couple friends he plays with a lot, and I don't play that often, so most of the time he just totally schools me. I'd like a DS chess game to help keep my game sharp. (I know there's good chess games on PC like the Chessmaster series, but I just don't like gaming on my PC that much anymore. )
I CANNOT wait until E3 this year to see what's going to be unveiled. I've seen some screenshots of what nintendo is working on, and they are doing some new, original titles (that don't star mario characters) . . . the stuff looked targetted to an older crowd, and in an anime style. I'm also curious about this all new, original 2d mario game they're being so secretive about. This system is so new, we haven't seen but a very tiny bit of what's coming.
The DS is so cool, as far as I'm concerned, I'm glad nintendo has reduced its focus on gamecube to make DS games (they've got 20 first party DS titles already under development, and most of them aren't announced. Can't wait to see what they are.)

Just makes me excited whenever I think about the possibilities. I could enter an alternate reality whenever I'm bored on a plane or a car or in study hall or anywhere! I can already think of many instances where you could play a friend when you're bored. I have two friends who just bought one, and they had to sit through that terrible movie, Christmas with the Kranks, for an hour and a half with their church group...good thing they brought their DS's handy ;). They fragged each other on MPH the whole time. Now THAT'S convenience!

Why can't my kids play a multi-player option on their Pokemon games? If Nintendo does't come out with a pokemon DS version, they will fail - don't underestimate the power of Pokemon!! That's th only reason I could talk my husband into Gamecube vs Playstation 2. Kids love Pokemon! Seems like a system that came out with wireless adpaters for their Gameboy Advances could also let them play mulit-player games on their new DS's.
Graphics are great, possibilites endless, but this will be a very competitive market. Kids will make a big impact on what is purchased!

I just got DS for Christmas and I totally love it. So far, I've played Tiger Woods PGA Tour, Ashphalt Urban GT, Madden NFL 2005, Spider-Man 2 and more! You can enter to win these games at http://www.kidzworld.com/contests/videogamegiveaway2005/
Check it out guys!
