My friend loaned me his Gamecube for the next several weeks while I'm home recovering from an illness. I have Super Smash Bros, Zelda Windwaker and Ocarina of Time, Turok Evolution, and Super Mario Sunshine--though I don't think I'll be playing that last one, it looks more gay than a pink balloon.

Anyway, my girlfriend comes over and plays Super Smash Bros with me, and regularly beats me. Anyone have any tips? My manhood is lying in shreds at the moment while she stands over me and gloats. I really want to make her eat that controller.

Well since nobody has offered any help, my girlfriend beat me AGAIN on the weekend. We play SSB for two hours and she basically spent the entire time putting her foot to my ass at an accelerated rate. And worst of all, she beats me with the fairy characters--princess peach, zelda, that stupid pink balloon thing, etc.

What am I doing wrong?!? Please someone reply to this!

Try using Donkey Kong... and be sure to wait for every Special Move (that is using the button B) that she use (be sure you defend yourself using L or R button) before you attack her... don't tap A or B randomly, you should have a timing.

Happy Gaming!!!

I know what you're doing wrong! You're playing the wrong game. Go out and rent Resident Evil or Resident Evil 0. They're both incredible games for the Gamecube. Everything else I've played on the system (I own almost every game you've mentioned) just don't cut it when put up beside the remake of RE or RE0.

Well even if I did rent Resident Evil, the wife--er, girlfriend--wouldn't have anything to do with it. It's a VERY rare day that she finds a video game she likes, and SSB is one of them (probably because she can beat me at least 70% of the time). If I want to play a good single-player game, frankly I wouldn't look at any console--I have my PC.

So I should hit her just after she uses a B move? I'll try that next time we play. I like to think I'm not just mashing the buttons randomnly. As for Donkey Kong, I've never been able to get the hang of him. Mario and Luigi are the guys I'm best with. I'll try to practice with DK.

Can't really offer you any concrete strategies since I haven't played this game since I sold it late last year. However, I'll offer you one strategy that rings true for almost every fighter..... run the hell away. SSBM is a 2d game with super high jumps for most characters so it'll be especially easy in this game. Just keep evading your girlfriend until she gets fed up and then bing bam, to the moon Alice.

Oh and choose a character like Link so if she tries to jump back onto the stage after being launched, you can do the spin attack and keep her from landing back onto the stage.

be sure to use the items that are dropped as well. Don't try to beat her fighting only with what you have. I beat my sister on a regular basis because she fails to pick up items and chuck them. For instance if your damage meter is high, look out for food and hearts. The machine gun works wonders because your oponent cant escape it. and I'd say that those pokemon balls (or whatever they are, are the most important) As for combat, like someone else said, if you cant beat her, evade!! Once you get her close to an edge hit her with a power attack. Or throw something at her to send her flying into the air, then hit her with an attack.

good luck!

My friends and I play SSBM all the time. Button Mashers can certainly hold their own in this game. I have a few friends who do just the same (I'm assuming that is how you keep losing to your lady).

Spend some time and learn a few of the characters. They all have many unique moves most of which can be accessed by pressing any direction on the controller while hitting a corresponding A or B button.

When you fall out of an arena - jump, jump, jump, jump..... You can usually make it back in by continuously jumping (if your health percentage isn't too high).

Learn moves that are effective at knocking your opponent out of the arena - not at just clobbering their health.

So much strategy is involved to being super effective in this game even though it would appear to some as a simple button masher. Simply keep playing, I suggest playing one player while your woman is not around. Some of the modes offer good training/learning opportunities and you may discover a few things that may give you the edge.

By the way, that little pink guy - Kirby - is a great fighter with lots of punishing special moves. Unless you were talking about Jiggly Puff - he sucks IMO.

Nope, she was beating me with Jiggly Puff. Yes, I am a disgrace.

Anyway, we played on the weekend and I managed to whoop her time and again. My favourite character by far is Mario. She ended up getting so frustrated that she refused to play anymore (she's very immature, not like me). So we compromised--we played co-operatively against the AI.

Thanks for the help guys, my manhood is still intact. :)

ROFL!! I dunno about that man... Getting beat by anything named Jiggly Puff has a great chance of wreaking any man's ego!

Don't I know it. But have you ever played against it?! I was swiping at the stupid thing with my sword over and over, kicking the crap out of it, launching it WAY off the side of the arena... and it just floated right back at me. It was maddening. All the while the girlfriend would be cackling "You can't defeat me! I'm invincible!" (She's seriously disturbed)

LOL No I have never played it. I should check it out though, it sounds like a blast to play.

I know absolutely nothing about this game, but Jiggly Puff is a Pokemon character (I should know, Jiggly Puff was in an episode last night I was watching with my kid). Does this game license both Mario and Pokemon characters?

It's developed by Nintendo that own the rights to both.

It uses Mario characters, Zelda characters, Metroid characters, Pokemon characters, Donkey Kong characters... all the Nintendo mainstays. Mario remains the best IMO (Luigi is pretty good too). Bowser, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, Princess Peach, Ganondorf, and Young Link (as opposed to adult Link) I've found to be useless.

All those names bring back the memories. I played all the Mario games back in the 80's and early 90's, but haven't played a single one since I sold my Super Nintendo at the time I bought my first pc.

That's too bad. Mario 64 was incredible.

Mario 64 was first game played on N64.Family sat around while I played & physically reacted to Marios every move, Being relatively new to gaming @ the time it came out, we were all blown away by the 3d environment, character movement.
If ever a game qualified for "classic" status, Mario does.
