View Full Version : The most EXPEN$IVE video game?

[Thanks for link VGV!]
I know its not PC, but I cant believe the price tag!
To boot, Steel Battalion doesnt even get high marks on review!
The most I ever paid for a PC game was $50 + tax.
Do they really expect to sell a lot of units? You're spending over $100 just for a controller you'll only use with this one game! Defnitely for the die-hard gamer who has to have everything. The most I ever paid for a game was $60, back in the days of the Super Nintendo. Looking back, I can't believe I spent so much on a game back then. Now, my motto is 'always under $30'.
<div class=\"smallfont\"> Now, my motto is 'always under $30'.</div>
Exactly! Thats why I post threads here from time to time regarding "where to buy games"...buying first run PC games for full retail isnt justified with sites like GoGamer [new games 48 hour madness: almost always $30 vs $50 retail].
So you would think me crazy if I said "maybe" to Steel Battalion??
AKU...what the hell happened to your avatar? [shape shifting fun] I love it! LOL!
I think it's everyone's right to blow as much money as they think necessary in the pursuit of entertainment. Yes, Aku will be coming to this board in many forms, heh-heh.

A dual joystick console w/ 40 botton control, & three pedals!
The size of the incorporated joysticks/console appears to be 2'long.

You know....you could take a regular USB cable and splice it on the end of that thing and use it for alot of PC games. If it ever drops in price I'd almost consider picking one up...

My most expensive game bought was $100 bucks, for Neverwinter Nights... and it was worth EVERY penny!

Well, now its $50 at Amazon! Thank you kindly, Mr. Invisible Hand!

Apologies, not quite so. What you saw @ Amazon was this:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/103-0452074-5656635
The games priced @ $50 are for expansions, add ons to the original Steel Battalion. What makes Steel Battalion so costly is that you MUST purchase special keayboard/pedals to play game, INCLUDING add ons like "Line of Contact" [Steel Battalion expansion, $50]. :)

I remember when The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall came out, it was about $60+tax.
When Star Wars:Rebellion came out, it was about that same price. In fact, I think I saw a couple copies as high as $65+.
I remember seeing it like a year after it had been out, and it was still at around $45-54.99 or something.
That game sucked, I actually initially bought it, and then took it back.
Daggerfall, was a complete mess when it came out.
Eventually, after a plethora of patches, they got it to be fairly stable (still has crashes, though), yet, it just goes to show, that just cuz its $60+, doesn't mean it's really "all that" or some "quality" product.
In fact, wasn't Ultima IX:Ascension some high-priced, but buggy-arse game too?
I remember buying Battlecruiser 3000A.D. for $40+tax at the store, but the lady at the counter told me...the PRICE TAG WAS WRONG.
The game was actually listed in their system at being $14.
I thought to myself,"Wow! What a steal!"
If I ONLY KNEW, it was reversed.
DOH!
BAHAHAHAH! But I can't say jack-sheitzer now, cuz I later bought v2.0, and then Millennium.
HEHEHEH.

Let me clarify, what I meant by "reversed", was that I was saying:"What a steal!"
But the game was so fricken cheaped and messed up and buggy-arse, that "what a steal" was more likely what the store was saying (or The Supreme Commander) by actually getting a monkey to pay $14 for this WORTHLESS game.
I can't complain now, cuz I later went on to buy the two follow-ups.
Maybe you could say, the $14 was a "downpayment" on the actual game.
I was an "investor" in the company making this game.
Yeah, that's it.
I paid $20 for v2.0, and I think $30 for Millennium.
That's $64+tax, maybe about $70+change for the game.
But, AHHH, if you break it down to average, that's about, something like $23.3333333333333333...etc. per game, if you consider them seperate games and all that.
Which reminds me, I bought the Morrowind Collector's Edition, and that was about $70+tax, I think.
One of the big things, was it came with a CD for the soundtrack.
Of course, anyone who knows how to make Mp3s into audio files that pla on stereos, would know they could simply take the mp3 music of the game, and burn it onto a $1 CD.
DOH!
WAIT!
You get this book of game-art/art-concepts. It's like only 12 pages, this kinda small book, I thought.
And, you get this Warhammer-like figurine of a Dunmer warrior.
Does it justify the $15+ extra price?
HECK NO.
For $15, I could have bought a couple mediocre bargain-bin games, or one good bargain bin game.
ERGG.
Still, I was a big Daggerfall fan, and despite the pricey Collector's Edition, I can't say that I wish I didn't buy it.

Apologies, not quite so.
No worries -- I am sorry that I made such an assumption! Wow, boutique games! Does any one know any one who owns it?

Not sure about ownership.
Have you played any of the Battle Tech/Mech Warrior series?
The pilotting of 40" mechanized heavily armored/equipped 'Bots.
Squad based w/a little bit of RPG character [unit] upgrading along the way. Largely FPS genre.
Great pc gaming fun w/a joystick. ;)

To age me, I played a lot of Mech back in 1992 and it was on old IBM PS/2 boxen in my student hall's computer room! It was very cool at the time and I loved doing the jump jets and kicking ass. I am pretty intimidated by how fly all of these games have become, though, but I am willing to have a go!
$100 is hardly the most expensive computer/video game. Apparently you've never checked eBay to see what some out-of-print games go for. For example, I have seen a PC game called Celtica sell for $295 for a boxed copy. I believe the most I have ever seen was for the all-in-one Space Question collection (single box) which sold for over $500. A game is a game whether in print or not. New games, $200 is a bit rediculous but whatever makes you happy. :)

Yeah, but how does one know if this particular game -- this Mech-based behemoth -- would make one happy? I have yet to see the killer-stellar recommendation for it -- where is the magic endorsement?

Ya know, I'll grab a review for you, but in the mean time, know Steel Battalion doesnt have any ground breaking elements/gameplay. You wont find it getting GOtY award either. Its more gimick than anything else. ;)

You've got a jump on me then, I've been playing since 1998.
The best Mech series, IMO, is Mech 3 & expansion [so-so] Pirates Moon.
There nothing big, no deeeeep story line, just a blast in FPS games :D

Yes, yes, a status thing even [some] gamers sometimes cant resist!
Heres a link for SB, scroll down for link to screen shots etc. Enjoy!

Eh, it got a tech innovation award if nothing else last year. Mostly due in part to the large controller which many say deepens the sim experience.

I saw the Japanese vid and I was BLOWN AWAY! It also said that it was sold out. The best part is watching the MOST petite little Japanese girls getting their freak on from behind this INTENSE and ENORMOUS controller! And using their voice and the PEDALS! Holly COOL Batman! (sorry for all the ALL CAPS!!! -- I do see I can easily BOLD!)

Right, credit given where credit due :)
The masssive controller would be a first time experience for any shooter, much less the Mech series.
I was surprised to learn [via Xbox board] that the original Mech Assault for the box was played in 3rd person perspective.
All of my PC Mech games [5], are played 1st person, 3rd person option [-Mech Commander, RTS]. What a difference in interaction!
Immersive IS the descriptive in any 1st person view, more so with Steel Battalions unique controller. *Achievement acknowledged ;)
