Don't know if any of this is true or not but here goes:

GameCube: 245,000 units sold in the US
Xbox: 205,000 units sold in the US
PS2: 200,000 units sold in the US

Looks like Link is kicking both Spawn and Heihachi's butts, which is always good news.

It's a little surprising that XBox is outselling the PS2 versions. Given that GameCube has been dubbed as the worst console for fighting games (rather unfairly) these sales are music to my ears. It's also maybe a reminder of just how powerful cool exclusive characters can be...

When I go to a store (any) and look at games the GCN version of Soul Calibur II is gone! There are a few Xbox copies and several copies of the PS2 version. Lots of PS2 copies on shelves could also be a matter of retailers ordering more PS2 than GCN and Xbox versions because of the much larger userbase.

The ad campaign for the GC version has probubly helped out a lot too. I've seen the TV spot for SC2 with Link more times then I can count but I have yet to see one featuring any of the other versions.

Really though, I still don't understand what prompted them to include the old guy from another fighter as an exclusive character in the PS2 version. This old dude doesn't even HAVE a weapon. What's the draw in that? At least Spawn is unique to that fighter. The PS2 should have had, say, Cloud from FF7 (or even better, FF8's Squall with the coolest weapon of all time!)

Just goes to show that mascot characters are the best thing GC has going for them. This game isn't even a dedicated mascot game (though the ad their running seems to indicate otherwise!) and it's selling better than any other 3rd party game in recent memory.

You make some good points here and I agree Cloud or Squall would have made a BIG difference.

I expect to see a lot of whining "it's only because of Link" from the Xbox fanboys. Not that I care really, since Link IS a blast to play as. Besides, if the GC version wasn't selling well, we'd have a ton of "GC owners can't tell a good game from their ass" posts.

Oh, I have seen the XBox and GC commercials....no sign of the PS2 one though. I wouldn't be suprised if VF EVO siphoned off some of SC2's sales....

Heh, I've seen the GC and PS2 commercial but not the one for the X-box. The game is promoted a lot more for GC from what I've seen though. Although, that's hardly surprising. But, this does bode well for Nintendo keeping third parties as now there is a candid example of a multiplat third party title selling on GC.

I think they used the gamecube version the most in the ads because out of the three, Link is the most well known. So yes in turn it benifits GC but the creators of SCII were probably looking to see which of the three would sell the most games in general. Link, hands down answers that question.

well actually i would think Spawn would be the most well known seeing how he's in comics, had a blockbuster hit movie "Spawn", TV Shows, and other games... but limiting it to only the GC gaming world i would agree that link is more known than spawn...

Well in videogame talk Link is very popular. And we all know that just because you had a hit movie dosent make you good for videogames "cough" The Matrix.

i know. i'm just saying that he is probably as well known as link... i didn't say he would be good in games..seeing how the one on PS sucked..except for ripping off peoples arms and hitting them with it... but yea. i got the GC version anyway.

p.s. im an idiot. dont mind me :)

Link is easily the most recognizable of the three to gamers. Since this isn't really a system seller game, it makes sense to push the link version over the others. Spawn may be more well known in differetn circles, but not a lot of his fans will jump up to buy an Xbox to unlock him in a fighter. As a fan of all things Zelda and what it did for video games myself, I can say I would much rather have link than either of the others. But I don't own a GC and don't plan on getting one either (that damn controller drove me up the wall!) I'll just have to miss out.

Yes, Buzz...having Cloud, Squall...or better, SEPHIROTH would have had me running for the game.

I guess IGN's prediction of the PS2 version of the game outselling them all like crazy isn't currently true, though I would be truly surprised if the PS2 version doesn't eventually sell better.

I have entirely no interest in buying it myself.
