View Full Version : So much for the review site

Its too bad. My favorite review site is no longer. I don't know who sold what to whom but "Videogamereview.com" had been destroyed.
- 200/300 word limit for reviews?
- Primary search by game publisher? How about the name of the game? I know you can still do a search but the navigation and presentation is just to cold and clutered.
- Buggy Javascript popping up windows telling you have exceeded the word limit while not letting you edit to fix it?
- Calling everyone who did not feel like registering an "Anonymous Coward", Real nice.
This new review site should never have gone live. The only reason I liked it in the past was the open ended nature letting anyone post a review with a decent length. You have systematically ruined this site over-night.
Who knows, maybe it will get fixed but for now its a mess.
Later...
I am usually not so negative but this is one former "Anonymous Coward" who is put off by the changes.

"200/300 word limit for reviews?"
I think not.
The request is to write at least a 250 word review.
"Search by game publisher?"
You can search by title of the game.
"Terible Navigation?"
Something that takes getting used to maybe, but terrible?
"Buggy Javascript poping up windows telling you you have exceeded the word limit while not letting you edit to fix it?"
I will be checking into this. It shouldn't happen. But give the engineers some time to get any bugs out. The site has only gone live for a short period of time.
Update: I checked into the review word count. Posted a review with several hundred words and it worked fine for me.

I don't know what the limit is but that annoying error popup starting coming up after I had posted about 300 words. FYI the popup window comes up after every keystroke (even shift and delete) which is what is preventing you from doing any editing. They have to keep in mind that many people don't type but cut and paste.
I may have been too harsh but thats only due to the fact that I enjoyed the previous site as much as I did. Its certainly nothing that can't be fixed. I also must admit that I took offense to the "Coward" remark in old reviews. Maybe petty but I think anonymous would have been better alongside the original name posted.
What is the word limit for reviews? What was it in the past. I know I have posted some very long reviews (500+ words)

I like the layout of the front but that's a lot of white space on the right side no? :)
My three biggest complaints (so far) are:
a) Can't see latest reviews for pc (I don't care about the other platform)
b) Can't see latest news for pc only
c) Very Very Very slow loading time.
There are quite a few issues that are being worked on. All we can do is ask for your patience while we iron things out.

The load times are being looked into. This is an issue affecting all of our sites, not just VGR. The latest reviews for PC only is something we'll have to look into adding. News for PC will be posted in the News & Rumors forum from now on:
http://forums.videogamereview.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=24
Your PCgame homepage is here:
http://www.videogamereview.com/pccrx.aspx
Keep that page bookmarked, as any new functionality that we add will show up there, including latest reviews.
I ask everyone to be patient. We've just transitioned a site with 4+ years worth of content to a totally new system. There will be some bugs to work out, and some functionality to be replaced. Please keep posting stuff here and we'll try to address it the best we can.

I have tried to duplicate the popup window you are referring to but have not been able to see it.
I agree on the "coward" remark. I believe that was not intended to be posted and I will mention it to engineering.
Not sure on the word limit for reviews.

I HATE this new look.
I use to come here near daily to see new reviews and upcoming release dates. It was simple. I got to what I wanted within TWO clicks.
Now I have to damn well hunt?
And then I have to go by system type?
- Why the hell is a site called pcgr suddenly all mixed with other console crap? I don't come to a pc gamer site for non-pc game info!
And then I have to go by publisher name?
I can't look by game title, I can't see the last 5 reviews, I can't get a damn thing I use to and still want.
Time to find a new site I guess! So long! One more visitor lost!

Well, as I said a couple of times already, we're working on making reviews easier to find with the letter sorting. The PC game site was merged with the Console gaming site because it is just one of the platforms games are made for. We've given each platform it's own portal page, and will be working on making unique features for each - including last 10 reviews for each platform, most viewed games for each platform, etc. However, it won't happen over night. It will take some time and patience. There were many flaws in the old sites that forced us to change over sooner than we would have liked, and did not have all of the functionality like we wanted.

Thanks for addressing our concerns. BTW, I won't leave VGR cause I have a crush on Lara. :D hee hee

I did not realize that you all were still in the process of tranporting over the old reviews to the new format. Good to read some of these posts here. Just 2 quick questions:
1) I noticed that some of the old reviews do not list the author, while some do. (e.g. my Morrowind review has my name Darwin as the author, while my Colin McRae 3 review has noone listed as the author). Are you still in the process of placing authors names in all the old reviews or are some of the author's names lost forever?
2) As of right now, when I go to a given console's page for reviews, I see listings for the game genres but no alphabetical listing for games. Will you be putting in the ability to search for games alphebetically, or is this going to be left out?

Will the review of the day continue? I always thought that was a nice incentive to draw really good reviews to the site.

I loved this site and the pc review site. I realize that this is the first day of the new layout, but it is horrible. I really liked the ease and visual layout of the site and this new one is very difficult to navigate. I also do not like how they put the two databases together. I don't think I will be coming back here for a very long time.....
As requested by Chris, please post any new questions/comments to this thread about the site change.
