I just installed/partioned my new maxtor 160 drive. Only problem is I was expecting it to only show 137 GB, but instead it only shows a measily 30.2 GB. My stock HD is a 40 gigabyte HD. All this is in my emachine T1840 (which I hope to replace with a custom built computer :D ).......the computer is oh I dont know, maby 2 or 3 years old. I did a custom partion and set it to 100%

What you'll have to do first is get Service Pack 1 for Win XP. Then get into Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management->Storage. You'll see a break down of your HDD. Primary and Extented partitions. From heer things are a bit tricky, but you should be able to figure out what to do next- look for one that is "Unassigned". Right Click it- format it (FAT32 or NTFS- this is preferable), and reboot. Your new HDD should now be recognized with all the space available.
Try going to the Maxtor site and downloading and running this Maxtor Big Drive Enabler proggy.. I had the exact same problem with a 160GB drive and this fixed it straight away.
