View Full Version : "Qs" on Mech Assault
I read a review stating "Mech Assault is a 3rd person...."
Can it be played in FP perspective as well?
Is SP any good?

Ive collected four or five of the Mech series for PC, is Mech Assault the only MechWarrior game made for Xbox?

There's a good 12 hrs per campaign in SP mode. It's not the small prelude to online play you might be wary of. It's a full package. Even on regular it was reasonably challenging. There's a few levels that'll push your strategems. I'll be completing it on the hardest setting next. There's three types of weapons to each mech and it's up to you to figure out the timely applications. I doubt it'd be any better first person. It's magnificent how everything is destructible. It's one of the best games period, regardless of system.

Im a Mech junkie, with exception to Mech Commander [PC strategy game], I like them all.
I take issue with what perspevtive they are played in.
Mech pc games offer the option of 1st or 3rd perspective game play.
The difference is huge! Playing in 3rd person gives a detached feel, while 1st person makes the experience more believable, immeresed. In 1st person, you are looking through a HUD @ your environment while panning camera left to right...this reminds you of your occupation as a PILOT of the mech, not the mech itself.
Just one persons opinion [but ya gotta play both 1st & 3rd to compare].
Hope MS puts out more Mech games for Xbox.

From what I understand Capcom's Steel Battalion is about as immersive and expensive as Mech games come...immersion courtesy of it's first person perspective (including HUD) and it's HUGE 30+ button controller featuring all manner of lights, switches, pedals etc...expensive brought to you by a $200 price tag.
Anyhoo...did some sniffin' around the Net regarding this unique title, but learned soon enough that getting your hands on one of these babies isn't the easiest of tasks, for it's stock is completely sold out ! Capcom will be releasing a sequel though called Steel Battalion : Line of Contact (release date : March 2K4)
P.S. here some links for Steel Battalion and Steel Battalion : Line of Contact.

[Forgive my ignorance, I have yet to purchase an Xbox]
Regarding Gamespots review on Steel Battalion, whats does the reviewer mean by "...seemingly endless flood of mech games for Xbox...."?
Is "mech games" mentioned in generic terms ['bot shooters] or does reviewer literally mean many MechWarrior titles have been released for Xbox?
Im under the impression there is only on Mech title for Xbox: Mech Assault, correct?

He means it in generic terms. When the XBOX library was smaller, it seemed to have an abundance of mech games:
Mech Assault
Steel Battalion (and the upcoming sequel)
Phantom Crash
GunMetal
Battle Engine Aquila
Murakumo: Renegade Mech Pursuit
Robotech Battlecry

How do the "other" 'bot games listed above compare to the MechWarrior series?
Are they just wanna-be Mech shooters, or do they have a story line that could carry them over into sequels?
Murakumo: Renegade Mech Pursuit....with that title, I'm surprised there wasnt a lawsuit by MS for infringing on "Mech" title.

In my opinion, MechAssault is worth buying and playing. The single-player mode is fun and challenging, especially at the higher difficulty levels. Playing on XBOX Live adds to its replay value. It's not the deepest game in the world on-line, but it's fun to slug it out, especially with friends. The destructible environments really add to the fun.
I don't have first-hand knowledge of MechWarrior or the other games, sorry.
Microsoft owns the rights to Battletech and MechWarrior, but "Murakumo: Renegade Mech Pursuit" is an XBOX-only game. Even if there were grounds to sue, they probably wouldn't.

While there seems to be a variety of game titles bundled w/Xbox @ time of purchase, I hope to be able to find Mech Assault/Xbox combo.
Im told its unlikely, as MA is an older title by now...I'll keep searching though. Its a gotta have for me :D

A full version will be bundled with the XBOX Live kit pretty soon. You were asking about single-player mode, though, so maybe this isn't an option.

Supposedly Walmart has a bundle with Splinter Cell and Mech Assault. I can see first person being a nice complementary mode. Hope there will be a couple of production runs of Steel Battalion this time around.

Thanks, I'll check there soon.
Playing Mech in FP is much more real [imo], immersive as I say [cant help it, I love the series].
I dont know who did the marketing research on SB's first issue, but either they miss-fired, or simply didnt care it would sell out...
I eagerly await the first COMPLETE MATURE review for SB. :)
