View Full Version : Vietcong; "Save the Outpost"
This is the first mission Im having difficulty winning. The object is to take out three mortars & comune w/commander in out post. My problem is I get the message of death " Mission Failed" after taking out the mortar placements, but prior to entering outpost...whats up?

ET, If I remember you must take out the mortar teams before they fire a round. The first one is easy as you can see then from the road, the other two are behind grassy mounds either lob grenades over or run at them firing, you need to be quick.
So E.T., what's the verdict on Vietcong? I have the game but I'm only on the second mission. I haven't really gotten into it yet.

The verdict is: Nothing new in FPS, but it is fun & will fill the void till something else comes along. The enemy AI teaches a steep learning curve initially [assuming you are playing on hard or vietnam dif]. Pathfinding for both AI has been good thus far, [although I hear your team members are suicidal in last few missions, which causes mission failure]. It wasnt till I got to "Rescue the POW" mission that Iwas able to let my guard down & have some good ol snip'n fun. Most of the time you'll find yourself squinting far into the jungle to see enemy. I think enemy AI have a clear advantage on spotting you first, you gotta go slow in the vegetation. Death models are cool at times, so slow down now & then to watch the "baddies" die! Havnt ran into any complicated puzzle solving yet. I have been puzzled by "MISSION FAILURE" notices a couple times [objectives are not always clear/complete].The "Tunnel Rat" mission may bug you, it goes on & on .Not all missions provide squad support, sometimes you fight "solo". On these missions, health packs can be rare [none on Vietnam dif!] Graphics are good [I crank settings to max:32 bit render, everything on]. Weapon sound is good, beware if you have mature version, language gets REAL offensive to some as game goes on [but adds to realism of wartime].
I have experienced CTD twice now, but I think setting to 16 bit would fix it .
All in all, a fun game especially if you like FPS, just dont expect anything ground breaking here [other than learning learning "screw you American" in Vietnamese, lol!].
BTW Aku, was it you on old board [Dobian] that just purchase new system similar to mine [P4 2.6/G4128mbti etc]? If so, the game will run smooth.
E.T. :D
Yep, I was the one who got a new system, to replace my five-year-old P3 600. It's a P4 2.66/GeForce 4 4800/1 gig ram. Your 2.6 with 800 fsb must really cook. Getting one of the new 800 fsb processors would have driven my cost up too much.

It probably could do better, in the hands of a qualified "tweaker".
Right now, Im following the adage of "if it aint broke, dont fix it".
:)
BTW, how do YOU like Vietcong thus far? Have you completed the mission that includes "Destroy enemy weapon cache"? [one of the first few missions].
I'm now doing the 'save the POW' mission. I'm at the save point on top of the hill overlooking the VC camp. I'll rescue him tonight. I kept waiting for my new power supply to short out again last night. I was more tense about that than the VC in the jungle!

This mission is my FAVORITE so far in VC!
Its worth playing slow since objectives can be achieved in several ways.
You'll double your gaming fun after you discover the options of winning this mission, & replay it at least once [I replayed twice, its a gas!].
I wish more missions in VC were design with elements in "Save POW.....but thats me.
May your PSU live long AKU.

That was one buggy mission. The radio icon would sometimes turn on again when I was about to walk into the VC camp, restating the same objectives all over again. Getting the POW out was easy, but I could never figure out how to signal Hornster or whoever to blow the C4. But it didn't even matter, because we walked out without being seen by anybody. The first time I got lost trying to get back up the hill, walked in circles, and then the mission failed after I heard what I thought was the sound of my POW getting killed by a trap...but I never once ran into a trap myself in that area. The next time we all got up the hill okay. This is the first mission that is like a tactical shooter mission.

I dont think it was a trap that killed the POW AKU, the VC will kill POW at first sign of movement...and as you have discovered by now, they are sensative to the smell of GI's! They can see you up on the hill if you are not prone.
I cant explain your com link activating, thats strange.
You played the mission one of three ways to win.
The cage POW was kept in has two triggers attached to its perimeters. If you aproached POWs cage opposite the opening, you would get the que to have C4 distraction set [action is delayed for one minute after giving order].
If you approach cage from hut side [very carefully], you would unlock cage & siganl POW to crawl out & follow you [sounds like this is what you did].
Another way is snip'n heaven: crawl around VC camp, pick off outside patrol one by one [unlikeThief, enemy AI doesnt detect bodies laying around, wish VC provided a way to remove bodies]. If your patient & like this sort of game play, the remaining VC inside camp will begin to migrate to outside perimeter where you can pick them off. Also, youll have to sneak into the huts & stab/whack sleeping guards.
Then its cake walk to free POW.
Odering up the C4 distraction turned out to be optional, Im not sure I liked that...
This mission has its flaws, but isnt so tightly scripted to the point of frustration. I think it could have been developed with a little more challenge & activity. After playing a couple times, it almost seems to easy, but FUN none the less.

Well, the sneaking around sniping guards is very much like some of the missions in Rogue Spear and H&D 2. Picking your targets, not being seen - that's more like these tactical games than fps.

Nooooo...I'll try that after I finish the campaign. I would imagine it would be a lot harder than other tactical shooter games where you are in very structured situations and have direct control over you squadmates.

Oh yeah! How right you are.[Im still struggling on "hard"]
For the experience, I tired playinc VC in Vietnam mode..lol, it was a challenge.
This setting was offered to reflect realism GI's faced in this war.
"Vietnam" is for the skilled & patient FPS [no margine for error, no "gamey resouces" to rely on].
I have yet to hear of anyone who has completed the campaign in Vietnam mode.

I couldn't imagine beating the 'defend the radio relay hill' mission in that mode. Even when you stay safe, your guys are always taking hits from the advancing VC.

"Vietnam" mode is a conflict to the game developers desire to "make it real". While not having any in game saves or health pickups does reflect reality, being shot 200yds out by Cyborg 'cong w/AK47 does not.
Again, I doubt that 99% of gamers could finish 'Cong in Vietnam mode, its too damn hard!
