Two conflicting reports out of ECTS. First we have this from IGN:
September 02, 2003 - During ECTS last week, Valve's director of marketing Doug Lombardi confirmed that Half-Life 2 would be making its way to the PlayStation 2 sometime in the future.
The game, which is one of the most anticipated in recent memory, sets to raise the bar once again by implementing an accurate real-world physics system, and equally impressive AI. And then there's always the graphics…
The second we hear more, you'll be the first to know.
Then we have this from Eurogamer:
Half-Life 2 is to be ported to the next Sony and Nintendo consoles, Valve's Doug Lombardi revealed at last week's ECTS.
In an interview with French website Vossey.com, the Valve marketing director was asked "Will Half-Life 2 be released on other platforms?", to which he replied: "Yes, notably on Xbox. The game will be available on Xbox but not until 2004. The partnership with Microsoft isn’t exclusive and we will also see this game on the next consoles by Sony and Nintendo."
But with the PS3 and Nintendo's "N5" console unlikely to hit their native Japanese market until late 2005 at the earliest, Xbox owners will have the bragging rights in the console space for a long while. No wonder Microsoft didn't bother with expensive exclusivity clauses...
Ah well, still just a FPS to me.

And when did the first half life, doom, quake, unreal come out? Don't tell me! Let me guess...
Can it be the 90s too?

Familiar rant from PS2 users. However when RF and RF2 debuted they insisted these games were as good as Halo, along with Timesplitters2. Oh Slade even ranted how RF2 WAS indeed a great FPS, of course when the deficiencies of the game were pointed out to him, he admitted he never played the game!
They don't like FPS' but they like Metroid, why because Nintendo told them, "hey guys, this isn't a FPS, its a FP-A." And like the brainwashed children they are they fell for it.
Just remember all these comments, when Sony and Nintendo finally do release a true NextGen Console capable of doing FPS' justice, these guys will flip like a light switch and start loving FPS'. Just like they don't like racers, but they do like GT3. They don't like ONLINE gaming, until Sony tells them its okay to like online gaming. Sony says, monkeys do!

I'm guessing Eurogamer is right, though I do wish it would show up on the PS2. That game's going to be off the hook.

Just like you to get everything reversed. The way I remembered it, you came to me and asked why RF2 was such a good game and was getting such reviews. The only mistake I made was indulging your biased self. Anyways, the whole argument is moot anyways since I was right and RF2 got quite a few positive reviews on X-box as well. Something, you didn't think would happen.
I'm done with FPS's unless they do something new with the genre. Better AI or vehicles ain't gonna do it if the core gameplay is still the same. I'd rather take MP2 which throws adventure and exploration into the mix. That's possibly the most refreshing FPS I've played since the first Doom.

PS2 can't do 3d PC-type games...this is a fact...want proof? Watch PS2 struggle to run some old school game like Half Life 1 or Deus Ex or Max Payne. PS2 should stick to what it is good at...simplistic textures and simplistic games.
small areas with fast framerates = PS2's greatest illusion of pseudo power. Take something Xbox could do in one swoop and break it into 10 bits so PS2's VRAM limitation doesn't kick its ass.

Deus Ex, Thief III (not really an FPS, but close enough), STALKER...all these games offer completely new gameplay to the standard FPS model. Even Half-Life offers some new perspectives to the genre in comparison to Doom's "shoot everything that moves" style gameplay.

I've seen the PS2 do plenty of large 3D areas. The PS2 can do most anything the Xbox can do, it just won't look quite as slick and takes alot more work to get it up and running smoothly.

WOW! Halo jumpstarted the FPS genre! Now, you can throw a hand grenade without having to switch to it from your gun!

Halo invented the rechargable shield...quickly imitated by Red Faction(or so I've heard...THQ sucks).

Red Faction was in development about as long as Halo was, so I doubt they ripped anything off.

I don't care what you doubt. Halo is a revolution...RF is a quickly forgotten game with a sequal that sucks...it's a dead series before Halo2 even comes out.

How was Halo a revolution? It didn't really change anything.

well, it was the first FPS with dedicated grenade and melee buttons, also, it was the first FPS to implement, and still to this day remains unmatched as far as vehicles go. Also, the AI is unmatched to this day as well. I want to upgrade my PC just so I can play Halo online later this month.

There is no way in heck that Halo can even top the amount of vehicles offered in BattleField 1942. The first BF1942 allowed gamers to drive/fly tanks, jeeps, Self Proppelled Artillery, fighter planes and bombers. Before Halo there was also a game called Tribes that allowed gamers to drive vehicles and aircraft. As far as AI is concerned Halo can't touch the AI offered for BF1942. The AI controlled characters actually react and act as if they were being controlled by people in multiplayer matches, ie. hide when being shot at, bumrush positions, maneuver to outflank you, and lay down suppressing fire when needed.
Halo is a great game. But give it a rest there are games out there that beats the crap out of Halo, graphics, AI, and gameplay wise.

That's a pretty basic way of looking at it. In a way you can break down all genres in a similar fashion.
Fighting games: Start match. Punch, kick, do special move, repeat til you win.
RPG's: Go to town, get quest, kill monsters, get more stuff. repeat
Japanese RPG's: Watch 3 hour cutscene involving people with huge heads and weird emotional issues mostly involving a depressed teenager with amnesia, get quest, kill monster, get next set of items, repeat.
shumps: shoot everything on screen. repeat.
Comeon, we all know that theres more to all these games than just that. Anyone that thinks that FPS's haven't evolved since Doom obviously hasn't played any for more than 5 minutes.

And the same can be said about anyone who says Fighting genre hasn't evolved since SF2.
Halo is a cool game for many, but it is really hardly anything new.

Like I said elsewhere, Halo is the only game for which I have respect on the Xbox. (Panzer Dragoon came close, but....don't know how anybody can tolerate that limited mess.)
Even so, Halo is no where near to being something new. You ask anybody who is a fan of FPS, and they'll tell you the same. Halo is cool, that's true...but certainly not because of innovation.

I gotta agree with that. Halo is a fun game, sure, and deserved the praise thats been heaped on it, but it's not revolutionary at all.
It took alot of ideas from Half-Life, threw em together with some stuff from Tribes, mixed in some of its own ideas and then polished em. What you have is a really fun game thats more evolutionary than revolutionary (man, thats said alot). A game doesn't have to do something innovative every 5 minutes to be good.

Dues Ex impressed me a lot. And there was a little known FPS on Genesis called Zero Tolerance that was extremely well polished for its time. And I played through Killing Time on the 3DO dozens of times. KT is probably the most underated FPS in history due to the unpopularity of the console. System Shock is hella tite. ;)
As far as the first person perspective in general, King's Field get props for exploration and puzzles. Fighting is a bit subpar but a good 1st person game none the less. And of course Metriod is just nuts.
Nobody brought it up yet but 3rd vs. 1st person is really cinematic quality vs. immersion. Some prefer the movie aspect, others like the feel of being "in" the game. As far as gameplay I really don't think one is better than the other. Depends on what the developers are going for. But I do prefer the 3rd person perspective.
