Ken Kutaragi has confirmed to respected Japanese journal Asahi Shinbum that the original Playstation will "live forever."

Not only will PS3 feature complete backwards compatibility with the PS2, but it will also feature backwards compatibility with the original PSOne as well! Ken Kutaragi has pledged that every new iteration of the Playstation brand will play all of the old games as far back as the PSOne.

This is great news for Playstation gamers. "One system to play all games. One system to rule them all." Heh...

Also doing the rounds is rumor that the upcoming PSP portable will be USB 2.0 enabled allowing it to connect to the PS2 quickly and easily. Also...ah hell, that is enough to get Xbot panties in a wad.

I suppose this is a good news. But, is it really necessary? I mean, how many people would really bother to play the old 6 plus years PSX games? How much would a PSone cost when PS3 comes around? How many people already own a PS2? It seems to be this is impressive feature on paper, but not too practical in reality.

Anyways, I am happy about this. At least, no matter how pointless this might be, Xbots can shut up about how PS3 needs to be back compatiable with PSX games......

Ok Geezer,

I suppose 2 months ago, when you were on your xbox kick, this new backwards compatibility news wouldn't have been important. For you, this would just be a way for Sony to continue to thrive off the Sony name without having to make actual tecnological innovations to their new system. Wake me up when you're Mr. Black and Green again, there were much less holes in your logic then.

I'm interested to hear if Xbox will be backward compatible. This is important. If GC is not backward compatible next generation it will be one more shovel full of dirt on its coffin.

For me anyway, which ever system I dont' own this generation, next generation it will probably be the first one I pick up if its backward compatible. At launch, games are expensive and there aren't that many of them. I could see picking up a PS3 in 2005 with a couple launch titles, and then pick up the dozen or so PS2 games that were truly worth playing for $12 bucks at the used game place (same scenario could hold true for Xbox). If you still want to play a game long after the hype and newness is gone, it is a game actually worth playing.
