Today I happend to notice one last copy of Ikaruga for Gamecube at Target for $25.00. I said, what the hell and bought it. MY GOD! This game is awesome!
Any gamer out there with a Gamecube who even remotely liked games like R-Type, Gradius, Life Force, Phalanx or Einhander must get this game!!!
Beautiful graphics, intense action and a non-stop barage from enemies leaves my palms sweating! This game frickin' rules! You talk about the good old days of gaming? The good old days are kicking my ass right now! Nintendo-boys who only buy Nintendo-branded games should be ashamed of themselves. Gadfly-you said you were looking for something different and this is it.
And since this IS system wars, Ikaruga is better looking than 99% of the Xbox games I have played.

Man, that is great that you are finally getting to enjoy Ikaruga. And at $25, you gotta a good deal. I don't feel ripped and I bought while it was still at $39.
Gamecube owners--Yeah, they should be ashamed if they are over the age of 12 and haven't bought this game. It's one of my favorite games on the system. These types of games have unlimited replay value, too. If you haven't played it in a few months, you can dig it out and it is as fresh and fun and difficult as ever.
Hell, I still will pop a quarter into a Galaga machine once in awhile when I encounter one.

Have to admit, I've been eyeing Ikaruga for a while, but I'm a bit reluctant. I like shoot em' ups as much as anyone, but I tend to get bored with them fairly quickly.
If I see it for $20 or less I'll probably get it, though.

Most places have it for $39.99 and I can tell you after playing it for only about an hour so far-it's well worth it. Like Gadfly said, you can play through the whole damn thing and pick it back up a week or a month later and get right back into it like the first time you played it.
It has pretty much sold poorly as far as I know and the cover "art" if you can call it that isn't all that enticing. Poor marketing on Atari's part is mostly to blame. But this game is as old-school as you can get. It will make you realize just how easy and simple most of today's games have become just like Maximo kicks people's ass with it's old-school difficulty.
And to Gadfly, thanks for the PM with the controller configuration suggestion. It does work a helluva lot better than having to stop firing and switch my weapon.

Blame Sony for making kids lazy Geezer. If everyone wasn't so hooked on auto-aim crap of GTA and endless Cg cinemas out of Xenosaga and FFX maybe they'ed see the point. I'd buy it if it were for Xbox I think it would sell better on XBox because we LIKE a challenge.

Ikaruga wouldn't sell worth a damn on XBox. Xbot's just want more blood, blood, gore, gore, kill, kill...
FPS are the only thing Xbox owners buy in any meaningful numbers. Go play your innovative Halo some more. WOW-I can chuck a grenade without turning off my gun! How innovative!

Ikaruga is definately in the running for the hardest game ever made. That game schools me like I'm a two-year old.
Just out of curiousity...anyone beat it yet? (On normal)

Ikaruga is a great old school game. But so is Panzer Dragoon Orta.So you are saying that Ikaruga looks better than Panzer Dragoon Orta? LOL! I doubt that very seriously. Both games are great. And PDO has more replay value since you get to unlock the original Saturn Classic once you beat the game. But I guess you chose to forget that little tidbit right 78? right.I'm glad you found the game for such a cheap price.Cant wait to see where the GC is in about six months from now.Can we say"THE ABYSS?" LOL! If GC owners wants a real challenge try Mega Man:Network Transmission.

Hey Game...is the original Panzer Dragoon improved in any way, like are the textures mipmapped now and stuff, or is it exactly like it was on the Saturn?

I think the three toughest and most complained about games released this year belong to the GC. Mainly, Ikaruga (which despite being the hardest wasn't complained about nearly as much as the other two games) Megaman NT Transmissions and F-zero.
And the funny thing is, X-box is the supposed console for hardcore gamers. At least that's what X-bots would have us believe.

Put it into perspective for me...is Ikaruga more or less difficult, then, oh let's say, earning Gold Medals in Rogue Leader? Or are they too different to compare?
To me, Rogue Leader is one of the most difficult games I've ever beat, and earning the Golds...good lawd that is nearly impossible. But it's still probably my favorite game on the Cube.

You bring up something I neglected to mention in my post. Many publications often compare difficulty levels at the normal setting against each other. They, rarely if ever, talk about difficulty levels at the higher settings. Resident Evil is pretty difficult at the Hard mode and even harder in modes like Invisible Enemy. Looking at reviews however, you'd never notice that.
However, getting back to your original question, I think Ikaruga would be harder simply because it constrains you to the 2d field and you have less choices there. Otherwise, it's all a matter of memorization in both cases.

Yes those guys did say that those games were hard. But thats based on only playing a few levels of the game.Other than that what other types of games has these guys played before this one? We'll never know.Alot of games out there on the market is hard.It all depends on what kind of games that you're dealing with.I can name a ton of games on the Xbox and the PS2 thats pretty damn challenging. But what does being labled as a hardcore console has to do with the difficulty factor of a game?
Nothing.A challenging game can come from anywhere.Hell there are some games on the NES that can give hardcore gamers fits even today.Besides just because the GC has a few challenging games doesnt mean that everyone else out there doesnt Slade.

Someone that deals in................. how shall I say this, catechism's, like Nintendo is marketing towards kids therefore it's a kiddy company, should fully understand my argument. In fact, the typical.... catechism associated with my argument is that the more difficult titles you have, the more you appeal to hardcore gamers.
