Which laptop?

Hey guys,
I am getting a laptop to take off to college with me, and I was wondering which of these laptops (both HP) would be better not only on the regular programs and applications but also in gaming. So please let me know which one you would choose, or if you know one of similar price ($1700) that would outperform these let me know.

1.) AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.20 GHz, 1.0 GB Ram, 60 GB 4200 RPM HD, 64MB NVIDIA GeForce 4 440 Go

OR

2.) Intel Pentium 4 3.06 GHz w/HT, 512 MB Ram, 60 GB 5400 RPM HD, 64MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9600

If you could somehow switch the Geforce with the Radeon I'd go with the AMD machine.
