View Full Version : What did everyone think of Tron 2.0?

Because I initially liked it. It has one of the most interesting artistic concepts in video game history, greatly expanding on the visual ideas that the movie presented way back in what... '82?
But, there are a lot of problems too... The AI is horrible. The light cycle stages which I had heard were so difficult, are easy once you discover the AI is flawed there too. There's also an RPG element wherein you choose which parts of yourself to upgrade, similar to "Deus Ex". Well, there's a battle with a boss roughly 80% of the way through that I couldn't beat after trying continually for over an hour. When I went to some forums to see what I was doing wrong, I discovered it was what I HAD been doing wrong with my upgrades over the course of the entire game. Therefore, to beat that boss, I would have to START OVER!
Voice acting is among the worsat ever as well...
I didn't buy the game, my roommate did and I'm glad. I just wanted to warn everyone. I'd give it a 4 out of 10 or so because it is beautiful at times and if you know ahead of time how to develop your character, it might be a tad easier.
You've been warned.
Played lightcycle demo. Went "meh". Never bought game. End.

Nice game balancing! ;)

Well, at least there WAS a way to beat the endgame. I'll never forget my first foray into PC gaming. I played a pretty decent Action/Adventure game that crossed a few genres into one another: FPS, Third, and puzzle. It was called Omnikron. Despite it being a little rough around the edges, it was a cool game, but the full experience was marred by a tiny little flaw... the end boss was UNBEATABLE!! Because you were forced to play the stage out in first person, and because the game was horrible AS a FPS, I never did see the ending to that game... :(

Tron 2.0 has nice production values, but a few big flubs:
The Light Cycles: they suck.
I didn't care for the camera angles, or one, because when you're in "cockpit" mode, you should be able to look around with the mouse, and use the keyboard to turn.
If I recall (I haven't played the game in a month or two now), you can only move the camera around when in external mode...or something like that.
WAIT, I remember.
When you turn, the camera stays pointed in the same direction (you turn it to)---which is dumb.
It should "turn" with you. Meaning:
If you move the camera to point at your 5 o'clock, when you turn right, it should still be at your 5 o'clock.
Instead, if you put it at your 5 o'clock, and turn right, it now is at your 11 o'clock.
Annoying.
The light cycles couldn't be skipped and the light-cycle stuff themselves, was a huge game-stopper in my opinion. You simply can't fuse an FPS game with this novel sub-game because they just don't blend well.
It's as if they did such a "good job" with the light cycles, that they wanted to milk it for all they could in order to "show it off".
NO THANKS.
I hear they do this in a new patch (which is like 50mb+ or some crap), they add the ability to skip the light cycles.
TOO LATE. I'm not going to waste my time downloading a mega-patch for this.
Rather, give me a list of the all the level names so I can use the level-skip cheat (because, oddly, I find the cheat okay---but no one has a list of the all the level names! Useless!).
The weapons look create and everything, but they suck in that they feel rather useless against some of the enemies you have to go up against.
Your disc is cool, but it's useless when going up against some enemies with the equivalent of a "GATLING GUN" and you all you got is a deadly "frisbee". Yeah--GOOD LUCK.
Also, I didn't feel the weapons were balanced. Some supposedly "powerful" weapons", actually required numerous shots against enemies to finally de-rez them, when on the other hand, just a hit or two with a disc would do them in.
Also, I felt like they didn't give the player enough information as to what they were suppose to be doing. I don't expect the game to hold my hand, but some "missions" were fairly terse, and I found myself running around in circles too often.
Furthermore, there were too many scripted/linear/puzzle/try-until-you-get-it-right levels.
I was particularly annoyed by one level, where there is a circular chamber and to get to the other side, you have to hop on appearing/disappearing platforms.
Now, in a power-facility...why the heck would they put in floors like that? It makes no sense, other than for the game makers to piss off and perturb the player, and slow down the action---which would make sense, considering the dismal weapons.
Too many jumping puzzles: NO THANKS.
On the good side, I loved the graphics, and I especially loved the sound FX. The music was awesome, it was a good update of the old TRON music. The storyline, I thought was very well written, and it's too bad this couldn't have been a second movie instead (or game and movie: both). Some of the levels, the way the graphics varied depending on the environment were great, quite breathtaking in fact. This is one game, where the whole "asbstract-facility"-type levels were not only "okay", but decent to look at for once (as opposed to all those annoying, "abstract-facility-citadel"-type Quake-game levels).
I suppose my biggest complaint with the game, is with "design" choices.
Technical stuff: FX, sound, etc., everything was A+ quality.

After I completed the game, I ditched it......initially I enjoyed playing it until I started to get deep into the game and found many insanely difficult levels. Basically, I gave it an average review, some good points some bad.

I am a huge fan of the Tron movie, so when I heard the game was a good representation of "being in the movie", I bought it right away even though I had played the multiplayer demo that sucked. The single player version was just like promised. It was just like being in the movie, like I was watching the second Tron movie... like Tron 2... Tron 2.0, oh, I get it. I still haven't tried the multiplayer in the full version. Yeah, had to restart a couple times to get the right upgrades, but it was even a lot of fun for me to do that, too.
