So, I got to play Battlefield 1942, online, and in the Multiplayer section, NOTHING COMES UP.
No servers, nothing.
Then, I took a second note of the ad, uh, I mean graphic at the bottom, saying,"Powered by GAMESPY".
FIGURES.
Of course, it didn't even have me log in or ask me if I needed to create an account, or anything like that, which I know is required by Gamespy, so what is the fricken problem?
GOSH, gee, maybe cuz the multiplayer system for this game...*drumroll*...SUCKS?
Thanks alot Gamespy, for ruining another multiplayer game.
I remember when fricken Battlezone came out, and it had its own built-in multiplayer system, that would get servers and put them up, and all you had to do, is choose a nickname, a flag, a server, and WHAM: you go right into the game.
SIMPLE.
Crap, even HALF-LIFE, using WON, worked like this: very easy, and NO HASSLE.
Of course, that was years ago with that old game.
In these modern times, in the 21st Century, we have a system called BULLSHIEZTER.
Oops, I mean, Gamespy, pretty much.
I go to play Neverwinter Nights instead, and it has most of the nice, simple interface and set up.
BUT: it's also powered by Gamespy.
GREAT.
I tried about FIVE TIMES to create a Gamespy account (for Gamespy, and Fileplanet), but their system is so BUGGY and screwy, that it never works, I get weird, broken banners or screens instead during the process, or some other weird, wiggy crap, like the wrong type of emails, or their "confirmation" links being broken, etc.
Anyways, Neverwinter Nights seems likely to work, but, AGHAST!: I need to download the latest version, which just so happens to be a 30mb patch.
I'm on dial-up; in short: F-that.
I still play Delta Force 2, or had played it on my modem running at 28.8, and believe it or not, I didn't get any lag (and yes, that was on the larger maps with 30+players), so I'm not worried about performance crap.
Guess what other game I got that also uses Gamespy is?
Medal of Honor.
F Gamespy.
And I'm not going to spend time downloading a 30mb patch.
Why should I have to waste me time downloading a fix THAT BIG for a game that wasn't suppose to require it in the first place.
GOSH, should I play stupid, and tell them, and EA, and Gamespy to mail it to me? Or to come to my house and set it all up for me?
Should I say,"Well, if they really wanted me to play their multiplayer game, then they would have worked to make sure it works right and it simple and accessible."
And then say,"Well, it's too hard to get it all ready. So, I can't play it."
or simply say,"I don't get it. EA, Gamespy, Bioware, why doesn't it work? Help."
Yes, like Leeloo in The 5th Element:"Puh-laise. Hehouulp."
BAHAHAHAH.
There, I just wanted to state my opinion on this, cuz, seriously, it's not worth my time.
If they can't get it right, then I can't use it, well, that's not my fault.
If they really want me to play their games in multiplayer, then they should tend to it and serve the gaming public, and not expect us to chase after them or suffer through hassles, for the remedy.
It's like giving someone a X-mas gift that is broken, and giving them the receipt and saying,"Oh well. Here is the receipt so you can get it exchanged."
And that's not right to say, because YOU should take it back and exchange it.
Well, with games that's the same situation, in my opinion.
Now, Gamespy, is more or less free, so they have no obligation to the user.
Nevertheless, the developer uses them because of an agreement between the two.
If Gamespy is not responsible for the service, then the developer is responsible for making the arrangements in programing, to get the user into the service.
As I mentioned, NWN and Battlfield 1942 both use Gamespy.
One has a decent setup, that mostly works.
The other is totally F'd.
Gamespy doesn't program the stupid games, so it's not their problem.
YET, what service does.
I don't know.
They provide, supposedly, lists of servers, so people can find servers/games, and get into them. Networking.
YET, free-services like Napster and Kazaa (I think the latter is still free), did this, and were pretty simple.
So how fricken hard can it be?
If some college kid and make a piece of software that does this so easily, then why can't a big company like Gamespy?
CUZ, Gamespy is into a whole bunch of other stuff, ads, marketing, BS, etc., all convoluted and scrambled.
It's a hassle, and its probably mysterious that it is, with plenty of assumptions and speculations as to why it is, exactly.
AHHH, so in the meantime, I choose the "Packled Defense".
"It is broken. I can't go. Make it go."
Now, I'll go probably go and play some Delta Force 2, by the small company Novalogic, which can afford are really simple network system, including its own free servers, but a titanic company like EA can't---weird????
Yeah, I dial-up.
I load DF2.
I click Multiplayer.
I click to connect.
I pick a server.
AND JUST LIKE THAT, I'm in the game.
No big-ass patches or "updates" to download every other day, and no stupid "login"/"registration"-BS.
"I press the button and it goes."
Novalogic can do it, why can't Gamespy or EA?

BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,
NWN 30 meg D/L (worth it)
BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH,BLAH.
I was about to say, you seem gung-ho about the NWN editor- if you want to team up with me to make a world ( I have something in mind), let me know.
Why should I have to waste me time downloading a fix THAT BIG for a game that wasn't suppose to require it in the first place.
Because players are coming up with new scripts everyday that Bioware wants to incorporate those into the game system; in order to make the game that much better. Gamespy doesn't need to be installed on your 'puter to run NWN, it just utilizes the service.
You're WAY to unforgiving with patches... rememeber PATCHES ARE YOUR FRIEND! If you had a broadband connection, I'm sure you wouldn't be *****ing at all. I just had to download a critical build patch for NWN, and it was 75 megs... I suppose you would've popped a vein! It took me two minutes at 250 KPS.
I suggest like I do with all the slow ass ***kers out there, get www.netvampire.com and download with resume as you will, and while you sleep. Like I did. For a couple years. Without *****ing.
I remember when fricken Battlezone came out, and it had its own built-in multiplayer system, that would get servers and put them up, and all you had to do, is choose a nickname, a flag, a server, and WHAM: you go right into the game.
SIMPLE.
I DARE you to try that now! LOL It's a SUPER big pain getting BZ to run online. Bioware is ensure now, the longevity of the game system for years to come... trust me.

Dude.... I know your frustrated right now about your multiplayer experience, but what do you expect out of your 56K modem? If your main gaming needs revovled around multiplayer you should seriously consider upgrading to broadband. You mentioned Delta Force 2 and the Novalogic servers, and believe me, i played on their servers with my 56K back in the day and never experienced lag either, but you have to remember that DF2 is very old! Today's games are a lot more complex and require a ton more data to be transmitted back and forth to operate efficiently, thus always requiring (i'm not talking about what it says on the system requirements on the box, but to be able to play them properly) a faster connection. If you want a decent multiplayer experience out of your 56K, you should consider War Craft 3, cause Blizzard.net servers helps out the information flow and thus dial up users are able to play respectively.
You guys do know you can just click on "Post Reply" to reply without quoting don't you? :p
Thank you for bringing that up moya!
Replying with quotes is good if you are responding to a comment posted earlier in a thread that is not a continuation or a response to the last post, or last couple of posts. If you would like to quote, it would be cool if you use only the first few lines or the pertinent lines from the poster, if the message is long. Our friend BortiiS' posts tend to be long messages :D Repeating long posts tends to fill up the page view.
Thanks guys!
I understand your frustration as well as I too am limited by dial up hell. I live in a small circle controlled by Sprint and they are very slow to bring dsl as it is farming country here and they don't think the expense will pay off yet. No Cable out here so I have satelite tv and there is talk of a wireless network coming but I am afraid the expense might be too high. I have used a few download managers and netants works well and is free. Resume, schedule downloads etc. Patches are one of the greatest advantages we have and it is a double edge sword; Fix problems and bugs, add features and content.
Also if you are going to stay limited to dial up...don't invest in games that you can not enjoy. Slower rpgs work well still online but fps games are usually a bust on dial up.

I agree w/ all, as cable/dsl is a must now a days when gaming online. BF1942 suks a** when running on a 56k modem. To much data moving back an fourth.
btw.. I've never had a problem running Gamespy for my bf1942 online fun. Yea, gamespy could be better but it's not that bad.

You live in a farming community you play PC games? Shame on you! I thought farm dudes were only interested in Rodeo's and Drag Races?
J/K!!!!
Oh, and sorry about the long quotes, it's a bad habit for me to click on "reply with quote" without thinking about the length.

YEAH, but how could you really know?
I suppose you'd have to check for game patches after the game comes out to see how big they are.
You live on a farm? Don't feel bad, at least your not in a big city like I am. It sucks (lots of crime, people with attitudes, traffic-up-the-wazoo, etc.).
Actually, rent the movie "Falling Down" (a classic), that movie does a pretty good job of accurately depicting LA.
UGH.

Damn, right before I walk out the door to pick up a game, that's one of the first things I do, check and download patches, and read the message boards for serious, unfixed errors.
