PS3 confirmed as backward-compatible

SCEI's Ken Kutaragi confirmed in an interview that the upcoming PlayStation3 will be backward-compatible and support PS2 software.

Kutaragi elaborated on insurance and security being factors on the success of the PS2 and PS1.

Backward-compatibility is the way to go for companies who have more than 1 generation of consoles. Microsoft already gave out clues that their successor to the Xbox will be backward-comp.

As for Nintendo, nothing was mentioned. Backward-comp was never part of their strategy. Don't be surprised to see them snub back-comp again.
