Farcry and Unreal Tournament 2004. 11 CD's. Don't you think it's time we moved to DVD based media for the PC, people? I mean seriously...good god...I have to use 3 pages of my CD case just to make space for those 2 games...

Oh, and UT2k4 is the best of the series by and far..lag issues have been resolved. And Farcry is like Chrome but super awesomed out...you just have to have a heavy rig to run it.

Doesn't the European version of Far Cry come in DVD format? If so, I'll try to get that version...

Man, I'd hate to see how many discs you'd have if those games were on GameCube.

I'm thinking about pickin up 2k4 though, only 39 bucks up here, sounds like a good deal for 5 CD's worth of game.

Hey, could my PC run Farcry? it's having a lot of truoble running Halo, or does Halo PC have MAJOR framerate problems?

Considering a GC disc has double the capacity of a CD, I'd say about half.

Yeah, your comp could run Farcry easily...I have the game set to max details, AA and Aniso on and it runs smooth as silk. Since you have a faster comp than I do and the same graphics card I'd say you'd experience the same. Halo, on the other hand, runs like crap on everyones computer...despite the fact that it looks like a game that came out in 2000 if you discount all the cool Geforce 3 effects. I don't get it either, but the game actually ran okay for me if you turn off antialiasing.

lol, and yeah...like Stroke said..Gamecube discs are about twice the size of a regular CD (like 700-800 meg vs. 1.5 gig). So Farcry would be able to fit on 2 GC discs and UT2k4 on 3...OR ONE FREAKING DVD! GOOD GOD!

All European PC games come on DVD (so yeah, Silversparrow..get the UK version), why can't they do the same here?

Anyway, Niss..I thought you played the Farcry demo. If it ran okay then you know you're okay. The retail game actually runs alot smoother for me and has less problems (I can turn everything on) than the demo did.

Just finished playing through the Farcry demo a few times... how does the retail version compare? Is there as much open-area levels? Or does it turn into a tunnel-crawl like the Vietcong game?

The demo was alot of fun blowing up the Comm Center in all different ways!

Another game demo that looked really good was Painkiller, especially the Town level with that Wooden Stake gun. Pow!

So far the entire game seems to take place on very open ended maps. You always seem to have multiple ways to approach an objective..mind you I'm only on the 4th map right now, so that may change.

When you do finally play it you will come to hate helecoptors....consider that a heads up.

I've just bought UT2004 on DVD (but not the special edition). 1 DVD! Rock on! Renz is right; it's the way to go.

It's a fun game, but I still can't help thinking they could do more with the single-player side of things (i.e. the Tournament). As it stands it's pretty much a straightforward level crawl, but they have hints of more complex things like transfers and a balance sheet. I'd really like to see a full-blown simulation of the UT leagues with players, stats, transfer systems, injuries, upgrades, finances, free challenges, league games, friendlies... And stuff. You know?

Still, it's pretty cool as it is.

I've heard that Halo - a port - performs very poorly on the PC. I've also heard that Far Cry performs exceptionally well.

Farcry ran smooth on my mediocre computer as well. (Demo that is) I could not crank it but remember this is a sub gig machine with a GeF 3 card. Halo ran like crapola and it also didn't grab me as anything special. Just my 2.1 cents

First of all, with DVD ROMs running 25$ now, there is NO excuse for anyone not dipping their toes into the medium. The DVD version for UT2004 is readily available.

Also, UT2004 is the game that Halo wants to be. I can't even begin to describe how much better it is. But what do you expect from a crappy console port?

Is there a DVD version of Far Cry?

Yeah, in Europe. Publishers here in the states seem to be a little paranoid of putting games on DVD. I've had a drive since I built my first good computer in 99 and so far I've only got one game that puts it to use..Baldurs Gate. I want more, damnit!

Oh, the DVD version of UT2k4 isn't readily available here in the US, it was a preorder only deal...they only made 60,000 copies of the special edition. If you didn't preorder it (like I did, but still didn't get...long story), then you're SOL.

You're wrong...

My buddy and I walked right into Hastings in Bullhead City, Arizona and bought one of the two copies they had there...

Of the special edition...

For 40$ too...

Tee hee!

I'd wait for the Pro before I decided to play the game. You really have to experience it in it's full glory before you jump in, there's so many little (Direct X 9) touches you'll miss out on if you do otherwise.

But as for the rest of your comp, it's better than mine and I can run the game fine with all the options set to max...cept for AA, had to tone that down.

That FarCry demo had a lot of different ways to beat the level. Initially, you could go to the left side of the island for high action - 10 guys manning positions on the beach and take their armored buggy. Or, you could go straight in, sneak under the fishing dock and pop the four guards about from cover. You'd get weapons and health in this conservative way. Lastly, you could go right, stealthfully dodging the patrol boat, find a way through the dense, abandoned jungle with the pigs and cool war relics, then surprise the enemy from behind with a mounted machine gun pointed at them.

The best thing about these choices, after thinking about it, is that each of them were fairly apparent as you started the level bobbing in your raft and peering out with your binoculars. I really hope this is a trend with new games offering more than one path through each level. Many games claim to be "open" where you can choose any direction, but in truth, you are just choosing which parts of the linear story you want to hit first.
