View Full Version : Return to the adventure game
I picked up a copy of Grim Fandango online recently. I played halfway through the game about three years ago, then the cd got tossed when I was cleaning house and I never finished it. I started playing from the beginning and have been moving along pretty quickly, even though I have forgotten most of the puzzles. I'm really enjoying it so far. I may decide after I finish to try some other ones. The adventure genre is one I never really got into. Myst and Day of the Tentacle are the only adventure games I've ever finished.

You've missed out on alot of good games then. I'd at least try out the Monkey Island series (1-3 anyway, don't touch 4) if you really wanna see what the adventure genre is all about.
Oh, and Full Throttle, The Dig, Sam n' Max, Loom...all of the Lucasarts games basically.

I have Full Throttle, the full boxed edition. Must be a collector's item. But, as is typical of my history with adventure games, I played a couple of chapters and that was it. Maybe after I finish Grim Fandango I'll fire that one up. Wonder if it works okay in XP? It's an old game.

If it doesn't work straight out of the box then just get ScummVM (http://www.scummvm.org/compatibility.php?details=ft). It has 80% support for the game at the moment, the biggest problem being weird sound volumes.

Sanitarium, Realms of the Haunting, The Longest Journey, Syberia, and Uru are all worth picking up (so actually is Myst 3D).

... I hold 'Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis' to be the best adventure game ever.
Only problem is, it's a 1992 (ish) DOS game, so it's tough to find it (unless you're a Warez ninja).
Basically, anything by Lucasarts. And yup, Syberia and The Longest Journey are pretty good too.

Fate of Atlantis...how could I forget about that one? One of the coolest Lucasarts games plotwise, and probably one of the toughest.
I think it's still pretty easy to find...at least the disk based version is...if LA is still selling the Classics Adventures collection. I have it, but I can't play it due to the fact that my A drive hasn't worked in years.

Sanitarium is one of those bargain rack games now - the ones you see for $9.99 at Staples or Office Max. I also see the Siege of Avalon collection there a lot in the same rack. Of course, that's an rpg.
All the ones SBS mentioned, I agree are worth playing. Sanitarium was okay, not great, but worth 9.99.
Riven and Exile are okay (MYST sequels)
If you can get your hands on Tex Murphy series, they are a lot of fun.

Is there supposed to be a sequel to The Longest Journey coming out sometime? I remember reading that somewhere. The Longest Journey had some very memorable characters, especially "Crow." I ought to re-install that game sometime.........

Yeah, there's a TLJ sequel in the works right now. It's due out sometime soonish, like about 6 months to a year away if I remember correctly.
lol, and those Tex Murphy games were pretty cool. I still have the box and strategy guide for Under A Killing Moon....just no game.

Ok, the messenger is a complete waste. alice is fun, but i think it is more of a shooter than adventrue type. what's a great, newer adverture game to start out with, other than the myst series?

The Longest Journey is newish...it came out about 3 years ago I think. There's also Syberia, it came out very recently and the sequel is due out at any time.
Beyond that I really can't think of any. Adventure games aren't nearly as popular as they used to be.

what about the atlantis series? are they any good?
Yeah, they are pretty good! Dreamcatcher has a bunch of adventure games that were originally created in other countries. The Atlantis series are (there are 3 games) were fun.
These are the list of adventure games from Dreamcatcher

You can get the two beyond atlantis at EBGames for 20. I don't see the first of the series listed there. That would be Atlantis, the Lost Tales. But you don't have to play the first to enjoy the other two. :)

Syberia is a good Adventure Game to begin with. Not too hard, not too hard!! The story isn't overly fast-paced however, and plays out more like a well-written interactive novel. I still am a fan of Realms of the Haunting... It's a good first-person shooter/Adventure game...

It uses the Doom engine, so it may look a little long in the teeth...

I played Alice. Right, it is a 3rd person action/adventure like Tomb Raider or Project Eden. Different genre.

I've heard so much about Realms of the Haunting, but I can't find it anywhere..where'd you score your copy, Steve?
Hey...if it uses the Doom engine you might be able to use Doomsday to 3D accelerate it..that'd be interesting.

I ended up getting from EB... it was just sitting by its' lonesome on the shelf... I was walking by, took a doubletake, and walked up to the counter with a huge grin on my face, where I happily purchased the game! :) You may be right- I should hit some RotH boards... they may have more input on that matter...

I love a game called Outcast. It was released in 1999 by the French company-Infogames.
Its a hybrid adventure / action game. It was made with a proprietary voxel-based graphics engine. Some of the visuals are so-so, but the gameworld is huge and voxels allow for large outdoor environments and beautiful water effects. The story is very quircky, which I loved and you can go anywhere at just about anytime. There is an almost complete degree of freedom that I liked. You get tons of side quests that are fun and advantageous.
You gotta love any game that allow you to sing in an alien language! It also has some of the best sniping options I've ever played in a combat scenario. Sniping AND singing in the same game....what more could you ask for??!!
The story is pretty standard. You play a character named...yes...Cutter Slade...I know, I know. Don't let that throw you. You are a professional soldier sent into another dimension to search for a previous expedition after an experiment goes wrong. The fate of two worlds lies in your hands. YADDA YADDA YADDA. :p
Don't worry, once you start playing the story takes you in unexpected directions.
I see this game in the bargain bin from time to time. Pick it up if you see it for cheap.

By the way, I forgot to mention in the previous post that Grim Fandango is still one of my top five favorite games of all time. Right up there with Half Life, Fallout, System Shock 2 and Thief.

I've read many reviews of this game. I haven't seen it in the bargain bin anywhere. If I did, I would grab it. The last time I saw it had to have been at least three years ago.

The worst part for me is that I used to own the game a few years back, and I dumped it thinking there was better out there... My bad! I'm still hunting for it to this day... oh well, at least I got my hands on Divine Divinity and I'm once again allowed back in Arabel... the gaming gods are smiling upon me once again!
I just finished Grim Fandango and it was most enjoyable. I'm going to miss Manny Calavera and the gang. I'll have to pick up another one of these adventure games pretty soon.
