A friend at work loaned me this month's official Xbox magazine and demo disk. We all know how biased official system magazine's are, but they were going on and on about "The Chronicles of Riddick" based on the only good Vin Diesel movie, Pitch Black.
The article called this game "the best looking thing we've seen on xbox yet" and called it a "AAA" title. They cautioned you that you might get drool on the screenshots in the magazine. Yet the screenshots presented a pretty bland and unimaginitive looking world with lots of concrete-grey looking corridors with a nicely modeled vin diesel. The article did drool at length about all the technical achievement of the graphics. But the I couldn't really tell why I should be excited about this FPS other than the alleged graphical achievements. And doesn't this magazine realize that graphics are more than just tech specs and real time lighting, but also depend on the artistic vision and design behind those graphics? The game looked like every other dark action game.
But who knows. It was just a few screenshots. Maybe this really will be another xbox AAA title. If so, its got some stiff competion in June releasing along with Star Craft Ghost, Fable, Sudeki, Full Spectrum Warrior and Thief 3.
Looking at second quarter releases for all three systems (April-June), Xbox pretty much owns it. What are you guys looking forward to on PS2 and GC in the 2nd quarter? It looked pretty thin to me on both systems. Pretty much all I see on the GC calendar during that time period is Warioware, Custom Robo, and the multi-plat Starcraft Ghost, with Custom Robo looking like a super cool game that won't sell squat.

Yeah sure, 'The Chronicles of Riddick' is a Triple-A title, whatever. Like Brute Force & Enclave & Midtown Madness were. Sheesh... You gotta treat EVERYTHING the 'official' mags - including OPS2 - say with suspicion since the folks who write for these mags are - mostly - employees of Microsoft & Sony, who also work on their respective Xbox / PS2 websites and general PR outlets. But I have to say, even though Sony & Nintendo have a tendency to hype their games up at times, no one can blow smoke up their own a** quite like Microsoft, especially about their own first party titles. That's just an observation not a diss. I think the Xbox is great. But nobody needs more Azuriks & Brute Forces....

IMO, the only truly AAA games of this generation (that I've played) are the following:
Halo
GTA 3
GTA VC
Splinter Cell
Crimson Skies
Mario Kart: DD
Metroid Prime
Zelda: WW
Super Monkey Ball
SMB 2
Smash Bros
Timesplitters 2
Max Payne
Max Payne 2
(notice no PS2 exclusives made the list)
There's my preference. Plenty of "AAA" Ps2 games right? Wrong.

So you wouldn't count ICO as AAA? Or Devil May Cry? What about Gran Turismo 3, surely that's an AAA game? There's a couple of games with Jak and Ratchet in their names that definately qualify as AAA. And of course Final Fantasy X, Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution, Ace Combat 4, and SOCOM2.

I've heard about CoR Gadfly and and apart from all the pretty polys flying abut their seems to be some pretty cool aspects that are in this game, which includes:
You have been incarcerated in Butcher Bay, the most secure prison facility known to man - although it's a reputation you'll be looking to destroy by busting out of it. Played out in first person, Riddick has shades of Namco's Breakdown about it, especially since its developer is attempting to incorprrate a hand-to-hand combat system that amounts to something more than wild flailings of your fists.
But there are weapons, too - although they'll need to be stolen from guards first. And then it's not easy, because each firearm has been DNA encoded to security staff - if it doesn't recognise the user, it simply won't work. Cue one trip to the facility's computer systemin order to hack in your own data.
If it's beginning to sound like something a little more cerebral than your average FPS, that's because it is. Encountering other characters, for example, is not simply a matter of ignoring them or blowing them away: a trading system exists within the prison's walls, enabling you to barter ciggarettes, harder drugs and other items in order for to gain tangible privileges that will assist you in your overall plan.
And there's a considerable amount of steath-based gameplay, too. Riddick's 'shined' eyes allow him to see in the dark, so a logical course of action when approaching guards in a shower room might be to switch off the lights and move in undetected in order to snap a few necks before anyone realises your there.
It's not yet clear how these elements will hang together, but no such question marks hang over the game's appearance. Use of normal maps ensures a staggering level of detail, while shadows are implemented expertly and Riddick himself, based directly on Diesel, is one of the most believable characters ever seen in a game.
Definitely one to watch, then, and a pleasant surprise from Starbreeze, developer of the dissapointing Enclave.

Everybody knows the best FPS's are on the Xbox anyway. From what I've read on The Chronicles Of Riddick its going to be like a updated Duke Nukem type of game.Plus its supposed to be pretty damn graphic.I remember reading somewhere that you can actually put a guy in a woodchipper like machine and watch the chunks fly.Ewww.
If there is any truth to that consider this game a must buy for me.But lets not rag on the Xbox's past failures shall we? Both the PS2 and the GC has just as many if not more to bring up.

I wouldn't say Xbox owns anything Gadfly. Here's what I am buying between now and the end of June.
PS2:
Onimusha 3
Final Fantasy XI with the PS2 HDD
Resident Evil Outbreak
Gradius V
Xbox:
Dead or Alive Ultimate

I'm not sure why you are listing another xbox title to rebutt my observation that it appears xbox has the best second quarter line-up, but on those PS2 titles, are all those 2nd quarter (april thru june?) I'd thought RE Outbreak and FF XI were already out. Probably I'm wrong. I don't follow the Ps2 that closely since I don't own one. Gradius V, Like R-Type Final, is another game that makes me wish I had a Ps2. Just can't fit it in to my busy schedule yet :(

No. The only good movie with Vin Diesel in it is Saving Private Ryan. The part he played was perfect for him - a boneheaded mongoloid who stupidly gets himself killed.

That is the most hilarious post I've seen since I don't know when. I was laughing so hard I splattered my monitor with spit.
(I know that actually Pitch Black was mostly a piece of crap, poorly acted low budget movie with a cliched ending. I still think it is a cool, highly stylized culty sci-fi flick, though.)

She would be a boneheaded mongoloid who stupidly gets herself killed. Thanks Trebor.Besides The Fast and The Furious was actually the best Vin Diesel film.
The thought of the Covenant killed Samus made me laugh so hard I accidently spit on my screen.LOL!(sarcasm)

You didn't like Knock around Guys? I thought that was cool. Riddick seems cool the cover feature Game Informer done on it was better. I think the obsession with the graphics is that this is a game that came out of no where and supposedly looks better than everything else out there according to both GI and OXM. I'll buy it if it sucks I'll take it back with in the 7 day time limit. I liked enclave though and starbreeze did that so I should be satisified hopefully.

It's called opinion. ICO, never played, DMC is overrated as is GT3, Jak and Ratchet pale in comparison(graphically at least, but hey, I don't like platformers) to Voodoo Vince and soon Psychonauts, FFX sucks compared to KOTOR(and the FF series always has sucked IMO), VF 4 is AAA I guess(especially for the price), Ace Combat 4 looks and plays PRIMATIVE compared to Crimson Skies(unless you are a sucker for photo backgrounds that are pretty when you're far away but flat and dumb when you're up close), SOCOM is overrated as well, it is choppy, moves at 20 frames per second, is cheater ridden, and does nothing new compared to other Xbox titles, if SOCOM was multiplat, I'd bet it would have never recieved any awards.

As much as I would like another AAA title for the Xbox as Halo 2 isn't expected to hit stores intil September 2nd, OXM are not trust worthy at all, sometimes, they can make I sub-par game seem like the next Halo. If I had a buck for everytime OXM said "This is the best looking gameon Xbox" I'd be rich. At LEAST every second issue I'll come across an ad or review saying false details like that.
For example, they went on and on about Brute Force being the best looking game, when I first played it, I realized that they must not have. When I asked to trade it in at my local EB games, they said they'd give me 2$ bucks for it, seriously, so I decided I'll either save it for a sucker willing to pay 20$ for it, or have a nice game of toss the flaming Xbox game with sticks.
So, when OXM says its a AAA title, it usually means nothing too much.

I'm not a Vin Diesel fan, not really into action hero movies, unless its a war movie like Blackhawk Down or Saving Private Ryan, but I'm not understanding the whole Vin Diesel is a mongoloid thing?
I guess maybe Vin kicked some sand on Trebor one day at the beach, or maybe somebody whooped his arse and now he hates anyone with muscles. But a little bio about Vin. Hollywood gave this guy no chance, wouldn't give him a crack at anything. He said he wouldn't give up, after Pitch Black, used his voice in movies like the Iron Giant, and continued to pursue his goals, and BLEW up. I kinda enjoyed Fast&Furious, not specifically for him, and I enjoyed Ryan. Didn't like pitch black, or triple XXX, don't even know what else he has been in. But, I'll give the guy his props, he is self-made success. And a mongoloid must be a lot smarter than a Trebor cause in this capitalistic society nothing says smart more than GREEN. And I guarantee you he has more than Trebs.
Again, not a Vin fan, but why just attack the guy verbally and personally, because he is in a videogame?

Well, he was smart enough to buy steroids and service the right power-players in Hollywood anyway. It sure ain't the acting.
Nothing says smart "more than the green." I can't think of a more nauseating value for a society to hold. Think about that while that dim-bulb intellectually lazy aristocrat sits in white-house because he was born into a wealthy political dynasty with deep ties to the Saudi royal family--a family that's funded far more terrorism than Saddam ever dreamed of.. Ain't dat just hunky dory? But hey, Bush's got the green (and the black gold.) Must be pretty smart. And besides, he's a Christian who derives his ethics from the bible, so Bush is not only smart (rich) but the moral(Christian) leader. fnord
You know, you're right. I wouldn't be surprised to see a Vin Diesel presidency in America in the not too distant future.

See more of the same? Steroids? Come on, service Hollywood? Anyway, I just don't understand the Vin Diesel sharpshooting. And since when has movies had anything to do with acting? Especially the types of movies he is in. And you claim he is not smart. He could be very intelligent is what i'm trying to say. There are plenty of guys bigger and tougher than him, that got movie roles, and star vehicles, that failed to parlay that success into more movies. He has guided is own career to a series of successful projects, big name projects, and a variety of projects. Someone mentioned Knock-Around Guys, Private Ryan two atypical action movies, well one isn't really action at all its war. Then Iron Giant, a childrens movie, then a sci-fi horror, car movie, big budget action movie opposite sam jackson. This is not the career path of a Bill Goldberg, or Roddy Piper, or Hulk Hogan, or even the Rock. Or Dolph Lundgren. He was also in that FBI movie, A Man Apart, and that was half-decent now that I recall.
Anyway, I guess guys feel threatened by "bigger" guys, wanna call them dumb, or accuse them of steroids without even knowing one thing about them.
As far as Bush, that guy plays dumb, but he is not. He may not be able to think on his feet, but he can think. The man has been thinking and plotting his entire course since he was a teen-age, it wasn't an accident he dodged Vietnam, went to Harvard, went to the top of the CIA. Is now ripping congress of $80 billion dollars to give directly to corporations who got him into office. He plays dumb, so that people will under estimate him. He plays dumb so that rural and low to middle class America will think he is on their side, when he is actually against anything that would help them. Bush is not stupid, he is cold, calculating, clever and doing exactly what the people who put him into office want him to do, make corporations richer.
As far as having a steroid ex-jock, of limited intelligence as the president, your joke, may actually come to pass. Arnold is going to run for presidential office. You say an immigrant can't become president. Right, which is exactly why Republicans are preparing to introduce legislation to allow immigrants who have been citizens for 20 years eligible to become POTUS. Don't believe me, then you missed his MeetThePress interview. And we all know the path has been laid for a California Republican Governor/Actor to be the President. Plus, Arnold, is also another go, who may seem dumb, but is anything but.

Well, Damen, I know this might be a stretch for you, but maybe I just don't like Vin Diesel because he is a cretinous mongoloid, who can't ascend to anything greater than playing two-dimensional characters in horrible, low-brow movies that appeal to low-brow people and the majority of Xbox fans.

and I know I don't know a lot of people around here personally either. I think its one thing to laugh and joke about games and peoples taste in gaming. But to personally attack people, I think that is a sign of stupidity and immaturity. It is amazing how intelligent everyone believes he or she to be, I mean, look at the quote on your post. One can tell you really think highly of yourself, and how little regard you have for others opinions, abilities talents. Belittling people that you know nothing of, making assumptions about people's intelligence, this is your way. There is no wonder there is so much hate in the world, everyone thinks they are better, what they know and their way is right. Games is one thing..this is wrong.

Looks like you were the one doing the belittling and insulting of one's intelligence here.
I stated my opinion of Vin Diesel - that he is a meat-headed troglodyte. YOU are the person here who doesn't respect my opinion of him. Hence, we get this little rant about how I "hate anyone with muscles" and "mongoloids being smarter than a Trebor" and how Vin Diesel is better than me because of his fabulous movie-star wealth.
Of course when I illustrate a point - that having amazing wealth doesn't necessarily equate to intelligence, hence Paris Hiltion, you get all uppity. Well guess what, pal? Paris Hilton is a dumb bimbo, despite her millions of dollars.
So, unless your Vin Diesel or Paris Hilton (or one of low-brow intelligence in general) you really don't have a beef with me. Or do you...?

All he owns is a Gamecube. And the GC isnt getting"The Chronicles Of Riddick."So why are we even talking about Vin Diesel and Paris Hilton for? The fact that we are even talking about these two instead of the game itself is totally insane.
