I know I am late coming to this game but you guys were right, it rocks ! I been sucked in and enjoying the ride so far. I even tried the demo and though it was not going to be something I liked when it came out. I was wrong and I have no time for other games at the moment. It should hold me over until Gothic 2 comes.

Hey DBS, you know that Gogamer.com is already selling Gothic 2?
I don't see it in stores, so maybe it's a foreign copy?

Yup, it sure is addictive. You should let us know where you're up to and maybe write a diary like Dobian!

I think it will take some time to complete ET but it is cheap now. $19 bucks at gogamer and Amazon. Worth it too :) I am looking to find the old man now after just leaving the city. I also had a little mix up at the bank thanks to a bit of a trick pulled on the party but we survived. Now to find that rogue !! He will pay dearly.....

How far have you gotten? Remember, character development is practice-based. If you want to gain experience casting fire spells, your character has to cast fire spells. You want to gain experience with the sword, stick your sword-wielding character in the front of the formation so he gets to use his sword. A hard game, but a great rpg! Some of the later battles are huge, and can last over half an hour in real time. What's our party? My main party of six was a gadgeteer, valkyrie, bard, ninja, mage, and psionic. A psionic combined with a mage is a whole lot of magic firepower!

I think I said this to you at the time Aku, but with that line up I'd imagine your party would be an absolute powerhouse by the endgame. They're weak at the beginning, but for a patient player the rewards of lots of spellcasters (I count hybrids like the Gadgeteer and Bard here as well as the Mage and Psionic) really make the wait worthwhile!

OK, time for a "near noob" questions: Hows it compare thus far to Morrowind, if at all?

The party selection I read AKU describe below reminds me of Disciples2, why the hell didnt anyone here like it [Disciples2 that is]? Its gotta be that TBS thing, anyway I digress...... :o

I seem to recall issues of some sort that made this less than popular with mainstream gamers..control issues??

Moya suggested I part company w/Morrowind for now [& I think I will], but I want to try my hand at a few other RPGs. Ill pick up NWN for sure, & on your recommendation: Wizardry8.

Hmmm, I jumped over to the old pcgamereview board & found your reviewof W8. Its provoking, clearly indicating its not for the casual RPG player but rather the "hard core". At the same time Aku, you reel in the reader with inticing preludes to battle & the hope of eventual success.

So, do you hold that a "near noob" like me shouldnt bother w/W8?[is it truly that frustrating?, I dont hear DBS *****ing....yet, lol] There must be a difficulty setting for game, where did you set yours?

Also, if you played Disciples2, are there any similarities [stack formation, progression of leveling up,etc]?

I have been in a few large battles and some overwhelming losses but still it is challenging and fun. I felt similar with IWD2 and I have to say I ended in Chapter 5 there and have to complete it sometime as I just hit a brick wall and took a break. I like the banter back and forth in the party and the story is there between alot of fighting. I also like the fact that with some careful work you can evade some battles although it is not an easy task. I have a Lord,psionic,ninja,2 theives-for now, priest, cavalier, monk.

Et- it is far more action based than Morrowind as that is about getting involved in the quests at your own pace. This is not as advanced in the graphics but still they are pleasing and I do like that damage shows on npcs and monsters as they take it.
I bet you would like Anachonox as well. Humor, sci fi and console like feel and it works.
Morrowind is one you can come back to anytime and I found when I went back to it I actually enjoyed it more. There is a demo of Wizardry 8 as well and Anochronox has one as well. Best bet is to try before you buy....as we each have different tastes. I guess all those years playing AD&D just pushes me more to the rpg games than any other...and they give you alot of bang for your buck.

There's no way that guy would like Wiz 8! LOL. If he found Morrowind aimless, he'd find W8 too hard or something. ET- Wiz 8 is ONLY for experienced RPG'ers. Heh, me simply saying that will get him loving the game in about a week or so! ;)

The experienced RPGer gains his RPG experience by experiencing all things RPG. "Learning to walk before you run" doesnt apply here. There is no chance of getting hurt, just the opportunity to experience something different & maybe waste a few bucks :D

Anyone care to list the RPGs that didnt add to their RPG experience, irregardless of liking it or not?[didnt think so] Like it or not, you learned something [even if its the fact you didnt like the game].

Ive got a stack of unfinished/unliked PC games; they have all added to my gaming experience. Most are FPS!
Its about time I started collecting some unfinished/unliked RPGs.

It all sounds so positively familiar. :) I've read a few more reviews on W8 & sense even more that this game is like Disciples2 in some aspects, with exception that D2 was a TBS game. [try finishing that one on HARD dif].

Oh, my party was absolutely pathetic at the beginning. You know the first area leading up to the mines? I couldn't get past a pack of Tanto wasps to save my life, and had to go back and level up some more before even trying to get up that hill. And then there was the Rattkin tree. What a major pain that was! I was so frustrated with this game early on I was ready to quit. But by the en.d of the game my party was awesome (although those pesky mountain sprites and some other things on Ascension Peak still gave me some problems). The ending was easy.

Yeah, yeah! :p In that case then, cut yer teeth on NWN. You won't only finish it, you'll like it too! I CANT possibly believe if you dislike Morrowind, you'll like this any better. For you, I 'd suggest NWN, Baldur's Gate, Bard's Tale, or Dungeon Odyssey as a starter for RPG's... In fact, maybe you should try Dungeon Siege first. Morrowind is for the hard-core RPG'er, and so is Wiz 8, so don't think I'm bashing you, I'm just applying common sense.

For the longest while I was the ONLY proponent of this game (Wiz 8), with Mochan vehemently trying to tear me a new one saying the game was flawed and a pure dungeon-hack and what-not, and the fact that moving as a party was inherently flawed.

"There's something rotten in the computer gaming world when you hear rave reviews from everyone about a particular game, and when you play it you wonder why. Hearing about Wizardry 8 from everyone, including other reviews right here, I was of the impression that it was the perfect dungeon hacking game. The best ever made. Well, yeah, it probably is the best dungeon hack I've played but the game is far from perfect, it leaves much to be deserved, it's certainly not good enough for people to be praising it to heaven while condemning all the other RPGs that "should have been" like Wizardry 8.

Wizardry is a very old game series that follows the "old school" of RPGs. By "old school" what we actually mean is "dungeon hack fest" and typically you will have a party of six characters going through a labyrinth-like maze where monsters pop-up randomly to test your mettle. Your purpose pretty much is to survive each encounter until you get to the end of the maze."

Just those comments there makes me want to laugh! You can try Wiz 8 if you want, just don't come back here whining in a hundred and one seperate posts that it's too hard, or you have no idea what you should be doing! Maybe instead of butting heads with me, you should take my advice every once in a while!

If you play it, put some more muscle in your party the first time through than I did. That's what made my early game so frustrating. My spellcasters sucked (spells were always fizzling or backfiring), and I didn't have anyone who could really knock heads. I would put a pure fighter in your party plus a monk and a samuriai. Three fighters and three spellcasting types and you should be fine. I think I just played it on normal (it definitely wasn't set to easy, although I think you have that option).

That's one thing about the game indeed. The difficulty ramps up per your party level, and even near the end game, some of the "simple" combats can be a pain, and seen potentially as a time-waster. I for one found the Ratkin Tree a JOKE! Except for the guards on the way down... If I remember correctly, I had to reload a couple times to escape with my life.

I remember reading on another message board (Bioware's I think), about this guy who posted saying that he NEVER used a reload whilst playing any RPG... if his character(s) died, he'd restart! LOL I would love to watch him play Wiz 8 in Ironman Mode for the first time.

Speaking of, has anyone attempted Ironman Mode?

Yeah, that's the part I'm talking about. After you kill the breeders and the Rattkins turn against you. And there's no way you can slip past them, I tried several times. And so you battle it out with them and just when you get over, a pack of wasps come flying up and you have nothing left, so you run into the Razuka (whatever) hut and hide out. You rest, come back out, and the Rattkin patrol has respawned again. I hated that. And then you have to come back to the Rattkin tree later to complete another important quest, but at least you are a little stronger by then, and have the exit behind you instead of in front of you.

Ok..I played all night and killed off the breeders after a few attempts . I went and now have to find a white flag and return it but I think I went in the wrong direction and now I am in the mines. I spent alongtime trying to get by 4 blood wasps that really put the hurt on my guys just before the mines. I will need to level up some more before going after them and I was surprised I had so much trouble with them after the breeders feel after a couple tries. My psi man has some trouble yet...good spells but he is rather weak and tends to die easily if we don't tend to him often. Although his use of the insanity spell turned the breeders on one another was pure genious and fun to watch as they took out the archers and did alot of damage to each other as mr psi refreshed the insanity spell a few times. Ok..it is 2am and I am bleeding from my eyes. Night all :D

DBS- get used to it man... The whole game ramps the difficulty like that ALL the time. Enemies that you'd think you'd be able to cream in a couple levels, become SO much harder at times... They seem to match your level raises, and even near the end game you'll be running from those Red Lotus Plants! ;) Well, not quite, but sort of...

The game spawned some sprites once in the final section of one of the retro dungeons. My party was already real powerful at the time, and they still messed me up.
