I don't know what games you've played, but I see you like role playing games. There haven't been a whole lot that I can say I can stand behind.
I liked FFX and FFX-2 and Dark Cloud 2.
My current favorite is Manhunt. Its a bloody, stealth game.
Some older games like Getaway and Dead to Rights were pretty good, for the price.
I haven't played The Suffering yet, but that's next on my list.
Onimusha 2, MGS2:Sons of Liberty. GTA3 and Vice City.
Madden 2004. Theres a lot of great games and I could go on and on. Let me know what you get.

Cor blimey guvnor! What a loaded question! I could sit here all day answering this question, but here is a - somewhat - concise list of my favorite PS2 games:-
1 ICO - Incredible, unforgettable masterpiece from SCEI (Sony Of Japan).
2 REZ - Short but intense shooter. Hook it up to a good quaility TV & Hi-fi system, turn off the lights and get lost in gaming nirvana.
3 DYNASTY WARRIORS 4 - Deeply addictive 3D action / strategy hybrid from KOEI.
4 GRAND THEFT AUTO III/VICE CITY DOUBLE PACK - Who knew the makers of Lemmings would someday be responsible for this bloody ( and I mean bloody!!) masterpiece. Avoid Manhunt though, it's a stinker!
5 RUMBLE RACING Unloved but brilliant racer from EA Big (SSX, Freekstyle). It's like Mario Kart meets Burnout. Big dumb fast fun, fun, fun!!!
6 DEVIL MAY CRY Short but deadly 3D actioner from the maker of Res Evil. The sequel is disappointing though.
7 PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 3 If you like soccer (as I do) you need this.Plain & Simple
8 TONY HAWKS 3 Parts 4 & 5 are pretty good but lack the addictiveness and interesting challenges in this deeply playable game. I still play it even now!!
9 DYNASTY TACTICS 2 Utterly fabulous strategy game from KOEI . Love it!
10 MAXIMO VS ARMY OF ZIN Just got this last week and am going ga-ga over it. Not as popular as JAK or RATCHET but heaps better.
11 ONIMUSHA 2 Beautiful action adventure from Capcom.
12 VIRTUA FIGHTER 4:EVOLUTION Don't let any chump tell you to get Tekken 4 instead. This is 3D fighting perfection.
13 METAL GEAR SOLID 2:SUBSTANCE The main game prob has too much FMV for it's own good, but when you do get to play it's heaven.
14 NHL 2002 the sequels (2003 & 2004) are ok, but this remains the EA's best attempt at Ice Hockey. Superb!!
15 FREQUENCY / AMPLITUDE Fantastic music/rhythm action game from SCEA (Sony of America) you'll play it hours, if not days!!
Hon. mentions- FANTAVISION - fantastic, overlooked launch title. GITAROOMAN - Koei's fabulous guitar playing adventure game. APE ESCAPE 2 - Cute & colorful fun. RYGAR - Solid update of arcade classic. PUYO POP FEVER - Everyone needs a version of Puyo Puyo in their lives..best.puzzler.ever. HITMAN 2 - Merciless stealther. Sinister fun. MEDAL OF HONOR-FRONTLINE Glitchy but brilliant WWII FPS action. Avoid the sequel, it blows!
TIMESPLITTERS 2- Awesome mulitplayer FPS. You'll need a multitap tho' STUNTMAN - Frustrating as all hell, but strangely addictive...DARK CLOUD 1 or 2- Top stuff! BEYOND GOOD & EVIL- Massive flop, but awesome game from the creator of Rayman who has been threatening to make a game like this for years. Buy it! PRINCE OF PERSIA- Also has sold very badly, which is a shame since it is quite incredible!
Avoid- THE GETAWAY - Drive around, shoot some people, Drive around, shoot some people (zzzzz). ENTER THE MATRIX- Terrible, terrible game. Ugh. HULK - Terrible, just terrible. 007 AGENT UNDER FIRE, NIGHTFIRE, EVERYTHING OR NOTHING - Fabulous production values, shame about the games..WWE SMACKDOWN - 5 years, 5 games all practically the same. Give THQ the middle finger and AVOID it!! ANYTHING BY 3DO - no wonder they went bankrupt, their games suck!!

Way of the Samurai. What a fantastic and hugely underrated game! It doesn't last long first time you play it, but it's replay value is incredible. All the permutations and different paths you can take when you replay it, and it's almost always different. It's also highly atmospheric, with a real cool 50's japanese samurai movie vibe. Love it! Top game...

Yeah, WotS is one of my most favored games this generation. From the corny dialogue to the weapons collecting to the myriad scenarios. The sequel to it should be a blast.

Can I pick 'em?:D
PS2 is saturated and it's easy to miss some good games.

Ace Combat 4. Personally, I think it's the best flying/airplane game out for any system.

...Silent Hill (either 2 or 3) or Fatal Frame 2? Kinda' creepy.
How about Suikoden III?
and don't listen to any Manhunt detractors, there just squeamish sissies without any patience.
Speaking of patience, Hitman 2 is an awesome game...
if you like the idea of being a contract killer, that is.
You might like Red Faction. It's an oldie but goodie.
I think by the time you read everyone's suggestions you maybe even more confused on what game to buy. I would have to agree with most everyones game picks so far except for a few.
To each his own.

By all means waste your hard-earned's on Manhunt, that is if you like outdated game mechanics, dull gameplay, and an emphasis on ultra-violence so deep it ultimately becomes completely banal and uninteresting. Manhunt didn't make me squemish, just very bored.
I wish Rockstar North had just gone straight on to developing GTA San Andreas instead. We'd probably be playing it now!!!

Heh yeah, I'm glad I read that thread you did waaaay back on the old General Discussions board. I picked it up based on how you were raving about the fight system and I have to say, I wasn't disappointed.

Sissy.
Just kidding. To each his own. Though, if you think about, we were asked to recommend a good game. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. My opinion is that Manhunt is an enjoyable game. You get to become a killing machine and the aim is to be a quiet and efficient killer. It's purely fantasy, Thank God, but there are not very many games that allow you to be in a snuff film. It's actually very original.
But there are better games out there.
And another thing, just because a game has 'outdated game mechanics' doesn't necessarily mean it can't be enjoyable. Play any of the Castlevania games on GBA and you'll have to agree. Or not.
One last thing. Did you play the game for more than 20 minutes? I hate it when some plays a game for 2 seconds and then says it sucks.
I implore you to reconsider. damian

Oh. One more thing. Don't take anything I say too seriously, I'm an idiot, just check out some of things I've posted.
I'm truly sorry that everyone out there that does not like Manhunt is a p****y. Doh!!! There I go again.

I know I'm a sissy but what are you? HAR HAR HAR. No, I'm not upset by yr comments, I'm always up for a good hearty debate!!
Personally, I don't think the GBA Castlevania games and Manhunt deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence. One game (Manhunt) is a cynical & contrived product by an extremly talented devco who should know better, and the other is a masterful , ETERNAL series that I love to death. I don't consider GBA Castlevania outdated at all, a good 2D platformer never ages, and the trilogy of GBA Castlevania games ( particularly the awesome Harmony Of Dissonance) are not simply good but amazing.
And yeah, I have played Manhunt most of the way through ( but not all the way, I have better things to do) & you're right of course that this thread is for folks to post there most enjoyed PS2 games, but when ya posted this comment:

I think after all the Belmonts have done for the world, the pope should make 'em all saints.
Well, we agree on one thing. 2d platformers like Castlevania never grow old. I'm glad your not one to take offense. (Unlike the guy who started the tread about a skipping problem on his PS2.) Sometimes I come across as an @$$hole. I take back my comment about 'Manhunt detractors' being sissies. Not bad, ol' chum, not bad.

I like Tekken Tag better than part four. The tag battles make for more intense matches.

Winback. That's not a game usually on lists of top games. It's a pretty cool game. I played operation: winback on Nintendo 64. I haven't seen the point in playing it on PS2 since I've read too many reviews that say that the game hasn't improved much over the N64 version-but don't let that stop you if you've never played it. Not the greatest but it's still fun.

Lozza. Are you still with us. I don't mind giving my opinion on which games I think are some of the best, but it would be nice to know if you've actually bought a game yet. For all we know you could be stuffed in the trunk of a cadillac or at the bottom of well slowly dying of starvation. (which would you prefer to eat first in order to survive: an arm or a leg?- Lozza's next post transmitted via psychic link with Whoopi Goldberg.)
In other words: Did you buy a friggin' game or what?
*now look what you've gone and done. You've made me use the 'F' word. I hate the word friggin'.*

I said I'd shut up about it. I'm not even gonna' type the word (unless someone asks me to,which is very unlikely since I've gone on and on about it).
To be honest I've just been hard up for something to talk about since I haven't really played any new games lately. I'm really looking forward to RE:Outbreak. I think I'll go pick up The Suffering today. Anyone have any other suggestions.
I was hoping that the X-File game was gonna' be cool, but after I saw the price tag and considering the fact X-file games are notoriously bad, I decided to wait 'til it's in the bargain bin for 8 bucks. I could be wrong. Let me know if anyone has played and how good/bad it is.

Winback is the #@%$ I'm sorry man but I think its one of the greats. I had played it for 64, but I only rented it and I remembered it being somewhat hard (laser traps...). The price of this game like Ring of Red never went down, but nw you can get it for like 20$. I think for its price its one of the better games that no one knows about. I always felt like it was an underrated game, but tbh I think anyone that plays it would enjoy it.
