A huge storm is brewing in the FFXI universe now and its all slowly starting to come into the light and could spark huge problems for Square-Enix even to a point of effecting its PS2 version, and thats a simple matter over cd-keys for the PC version of the game, pure and simple if you don't play your account for 3 months, Square-Enix *will* and I will repeat the *WILL* terminate your cd-key and all releverant code/information for the software you purchased making it literally *trash* to throw into the nearest bin because you could do nothing else with it. When I first purchased the game, If I knew about all this, I would have never got it in a million years.

All these was brought into the light earlier today, when someone from the forums I go to made a post that his log-in information was invalid, so he went to the support section which is still beta btw and after plenty of grief from them found out the reasons why, I'm not going to go into details why but even in the manual it states this, and I quote.

Page 11 Service and Fees

CAUTION! About your member information

" You're membership information is retained on the server for three months after your access to playonline is disabled should you decide to reactivate your playonline account and to use the playonline services again during this three-month period, simply log onto playonline and follow the intructions there. (very vague intructions at best) You wil be able to use the same account information that was registered at the time you unsubscribed from playonline. (This vaguely means your content IDS which you pay the subs for, however doesn't mean that your characters you created could be deleted at anytime)

After this three-month period has elapsed, you can no longer use your previous account information. You must create a new account to use playonline again. Please note that this means you must purchase a new copy of the software from a retailer and reregister for playonline. "

Needless to say, I never read or even noticed this part of the manual until I read about it earlier and I was shocked and extremely pissed at this attitude taken by Square, and because I cancelled my account for the game simply because the game is buggy very imbalanced, has racist people, has 6-10 hour "straight" quests to complete and its almost impossible to level beyond 40 I cancelled my account for the time being until a later date when hopefully they might have fixed all the problems, now i'm forced either to spend $14 every 2 months to just keep my 2 characters and stuff I collected in the hope for a better future for the game or just literally throw the game in the garbage next month, at least now I know why retailers will not take this game back for any reasons even if the game doesn't work at all on my system, I remember the clerk saying blah, blah, blah when I first got the game, at the time I was all hyped up about it to listen, a complete waste of $50

Now, here is where it gets tricky for PS2 owners, since it will have the same problems, if you don't play for 3 months you will lose $100, $50 for the game and $50 for the HD.

Wow....thats amazing. Its kind of like your renting the game. I'm just wondering how they can get away with something like that. You pay 50$ for the game and say for whatever reason you may have to go away or something for three months or whatever and all the sudden you have to buy another game? Yeah thats messed up. I hope I see an article about this in a gaming magazine

Its worst than that though, imagine all that time and effort going into making the packaging and game manuals after the 3 month limit is up, the only use for it is to be recycled, personally this attitude is going to bite them on the ass pretty soon.

I think the wrong conclusions are being drawn from this.
If the PlayOnline account is disabled and left idle for three months the PlayOnline account will be deleted and you will have to repurchase the game, that's not a misprint. However, not paying for your characters for 3 months does not cause your PlayOnline account to be disabled. If PlayOnline does not receive payments than the account is suspended, not disabled, and can be accessed again when payment is received (page 10 of the manual). Unsubscribing is very different, and why you would want to unsubscribe to PlayOnline is beyond me, you can refuse payment without unsubscribing by simply cancelling your content id (not your PlayOnline account), however, after 3 months your content id will be unretrievable. So if you decide to stop playing and paying for 3 months, you will not have to repurchase the game, although you will have to restart your character.

NOTE: I gained this information simply by reading the manual and I have not tested it. It may well be that after 3 months without pay the PlayOnline account is changed from suspended to disabled, however if so, this is not stated in the manual.

this is bs! I used to own FFXI, got tired of paying $15 monthly so I deactivated my account. Came back now (about 4months later), tried to log in again. didnt work. so I searched around, found this website and found out this peice of info. I now Hate Square. What kind of rule is this where they have right to pretty much "DELETE YOUR GAME" (cd key) if you dont play for 3months. that should be illegal!

If anyone finds any new info on this, please post it here right away

Currently SoE are offering a 'come back to FFXI' program to some members, if you qualify you get your character/items etc all restored, the downside you still have to buy another copy of the game, This isn't guarenteed though.....

Ya this is exactley why i never bought FF 11.If they really think by doing this they will sell more games there dead wrong.Infact i was a big fan of the whole FF series but i will never buy another one of there games again.I dont even care if the rest of there games score 10/10 i will not buy from a developer whos whole intent is to rip people off.
